In body studio, speed of the render is related to the size of the texture maps you use. So if you're using V3 for instnce, you will want to scale down the textures quite a bit before using the plugin. BUT since body studio opens a poser engine inside of your host app, your host app is now subject to the same problems which plague Poser. You would be better off using a Poser character inside app of choice and learning to use the host app instead.
I just prefer lightwave more than 3ds max and I couldnt afford maya, I believe that there are plugins for lightwave to import poser figures and scenes. You would be best finding which program that you prefer yourself and then getting a poser plugin for it. Most of the major programs have poser plugins now. Another alternative would be vue 5 infinite, it can import poser figures and animations (I don
t know if it does dynamic cloth or hair) but the renderer is fairly good and it is great for making backgrounds and crowd scenes.

You might want to take a look at Carrara from Eovia. It has a very good render engine, and the soon to be released version 5 will have native Poser figure support (i.e. you will be able to import your Poser figures and pose them within Carrara), but no dynamic cloth/hair import. Carrara currently has Poser hosting support for P5 dynamic cloth/hair with Transposer2, but no support for P6 yet.The attached link is to an image of a work in progress (still intend to finsh it some day) I did with C4Pro and Transposer1. GI and HDRI in Carrara make setting up good lighting very easy.
Carrara is also much less expensive than 3DS Max or Maya.

The advantage of using something like 3dsMax or Maya for rendering would be that they both ship with MentalRay (also used by XSI), which is one of the best production renderers you can get, short of PRman. You'll have access to some cutting edge features and FX, and get some good experience working with apps that are considered 'industry standards' in certain areas of CG. The disadvantage comes in using BodyStudio itself. In my experience with that plugin, it tends to make the application rather unstable at times (particularly when using it with other plugins in 3dsMax), and saving a scene with an embedded PZ3 can screw up your textures something aweful, unless you rename them all to something unique before you attempt to save. I'd take the advice above, and check out the features in the new Carrara 5 that's coming out in Dec. You'll have the ability to use SSS for things like skin, and some fast (really fast) Ambient Occlusion. Like Vue, it can also do GI and HDRI if you desire that. Also, it's said to import Poser scenes and, unlike Vue, gives you the option to automatically rig Poser figures natively in the application if you wish, which sounds interesting.

which is the better and faster render, poser 6 firefly or to buy body studio and render in 3d max or maya?
