I am playing with using Off camera flashes for portrait work. I am hoping I can get to grips with these so I can take them on location to do portraits. My wife and daughter are my first practice victims. Katie Setup: 1 canon 580 flash on stand about 7' shooting through an umbrella. 1 Sigma 500 DG flash off to side for hair highlights and another Sigma behind for background light. Glenda setup was the canon with umbrella off to my left and the sigma off to the other side almost 90 degrees. Here is Katie 1

You are getting the light right, but I would avoid the vignettes and softness for now, while in WIP. Hard to tell what the light sources did on all sides with that blur.

I actually prefer the softness and blur of the first one here! The other ones are a bit too harsh for my taste. But the shots are clear and sharp and with a bit of dreamy effect it works beautifully!

Doug - I think you caught the thread as the others were loading? You posted just a minute after the last photo posted. Thanks for looking. tibet2004uk - I am not sure about the first one, just had some fun playing with the effect. These were just some practice sessions with my wife and daughter (both not real happy to be my guinea pigs!) But I had just got some wireless radio slaves to trigger my flashes off camera, so I had to try them out. Also first time using hotshoe flashes for portrait. Shoot them using umbrellas. Thanks for looking.
