Subject: ---Is Paris Burning? (Or the E-On Offices?)

After reading about the continuing riots in Paris, after nine days (see news link)- I went out searching for any satellite images that might also show smoke rising from Paris- but could not find any...

However- I did go and download the new FREE Version of Google Earth- just to see EXACTLY where E-On's offices ARE in relation to central Paris...

Google Earth is a very interesting app- and actually has Microsoft so paranoid they are developing their own on-line software products called Virtual Earth...

After checking out the Eiffel Tower (like any good tourist) I went in search of E-On's office!

---WELL- I could not get Google Earth to do any type of search on E-On's office address- so I did another Google search and found Maporama- which allowed me to enter E-On's office address and give me a general reference point to start with. Maporama is very HANDY for this purpose!

--Once I had the general map reference (I was once a Boy Scout!) I was able to relate that to the Google Map. It STILL took about half an hour of looking around Paris to actually get the right sector of Paris- based upon the Maporama map. (And also figuring out how to use Google Earth in the process).

Unfortunately the FREE version of Google's Google Earth does not office extremely detailed map overlays of Paris- I suppose the "Pro" version does...

--Well, FINALLY, I think here's the block where E-On's offices are located. I don't see ANY fires burning (heh!)

So- our favorite little software company STILL appears SAFE and ready to create Vue 6!

So....
Anyone familiar with Paris can tell me if I actually nailed the right block...?

bruno021 ( ) posted Sat, 05 November 2005 at 6:21 PM

I can confirm Paris is not burning, I wouldn't say the same thing for the northern suburbs, though! From E-on's postal address, only thing I can say is that you are in the right district, I didn't know it was on Rue Rochebrune, but I could check tomorrow, about 1/2 a mile from my place.

Veritas777 ( ) posted Sat, 05 November 2005 at 7:09 PM ยท edited Sat, 05 November 2005 at 7:15 PM

Well- E-on uses:

BP 394
75 526 Paris Cedex 11

as their postal address
but their STREET address is:

6 Rue du General Guilhem 75011

which should place it in the office block
shown above. Rue Rochebrune is a
street which General Guilhem appears to
intersect.

E-on's office is apparently in this office
building block, which has nice inner courtyards,
according to the satellite photo.

(And of course- these are NOT Real Time Satellite
photos- they were made over a period of the last
three years and merged and updated periodically.)

Also- I learned from reading the Google Earth FAQ
that street search is not supported outside of the
US, UK and Canada...

Here's what Renderosity's offices look like in Tennessee! Looks like jumping on the freeway is no problem... (The building looks like a big COMPUTER CHIP!)

...And DAZ- (It's that white building on the right just below the office address)...

Now you know why Dan Farr's DVD production company is called "Mountain Shadow". Looks like in the morning those
mountains delay the sunlight a bit! ...Wonder what's going in across the road?

Maybe Google Earth will allow Microsoft Flight Simulator Add-Ons? Some nice puffy clouds would be nice in the background...

(Or maybe Google and E-On will strike a software deal so that Google files can be imported into Vue 6. This would be especially nice since Google Earth PRO supports ESRI Shape files as well as a lot of other GIS data formats! I can see
why Microsoft is getting worried when they can see how FAR Google is actually taking this! It's like an entire Professional 3D application on the internet!

Cool stuff, Veritas... You're keeping us current!

Link above to a Google Earth forum... Well- I think GIS is one of the HOTTEST and fastest growing 3D markets out there! That's why I am hoping E-On will notice and put GIS features in Vue 6. But the fact that two GIANTS like Microsoft and Google seem to be racing to capture this market- with both apps still in BETA- but with a fast growing user base- tells me that GIS is going to be the BIG THING in 2006! So its worth taking the time to look at Google Earth and Virtual Earth and see how it might affect what you do with 3D imagery- especially if you do Professional projects...

Orio ( ) posted Sat, 05 November 2005 at 10:09 PM

Veritas, I have been there (in E-On's headquarter) two years ago, and as far as I can remember, there is a square with a garden and trees in front of the building, just the other side of the road, so I don't think that you picked the right buildings, because this appears to have other buildings on the other side of the street. Or maybe Nicholas has replaced trees with buildings in the ecosystem of the block ;-) If I could look at a larger enlargement, I would be probably able to tell a definite word.

Google Earth - completely off topic - but well worth a look! http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/10/14/google_earth_competition_results/

dvisuals ( ) posted Sun, 06 November 2005 at 4:22 AM

Veritas, The square that Orio refers to is "Square Marice Gardette." It's the park area above and to the left of your yellow circle. The address "6" would put E-on a bit further north, closer to "Passage Guilhem." The intersection of "Rochebrune" and "Gen. Guilhem" has the address "1." The intersection of "Gen Guilhem" and the street to the north and directly below "Rue Saint Amboise" ("Rue Lacharriere") has the address "13." Somewhere in the middle would be my guess. This is a sad time for France. Violence in Paris hurts deeply. Truth

MightyPete ( ) posted Sun, 06 November 2005 at 4:56 AM

There is no difference between the pro and free version as far as res is concerned. I just thought I'd point that out. It has features that are not available in the free version but the images and data base are the same. You can go to: http:.bbs.keyhole.com And sign up and then click on the "in the news" forum for the latest overlays always. Violence is always a sad state of affairs. It's no way to solve a problem.

Hey, MightyPete - good to see your nose again!

One day your ship comes in - but you're at the airport.

Well Paris IS burning, or it was last night. They burnt down an underground garage a yard away from home. The building could've blown up if the firemen hadn't arrived in time. 35 cars were destroyed, including mine! ( yes my friends I pay for this parking lot every month, and the bloody entrance door was out of order, so it was wide open. ) So, on my way back from the police station, I dropped by the E-on's offices, and they are safe. I marked their excat location on your map, Veritas, it's the green circle. Now, guess the name of the square in front of their building? Hint: check your atmosphere collections.

MightyPete ( ) posted Sun, 06 November 2005 at 9:47 AM

Thanks, Well I've been around just not posting much. Our friend is missing.

Veritas777 ( ) posted Sun, 06 November 2005 at 12:55 PM

Bruno and Dvisuals- Thanks for checking this and pointing out the right E-On office location. Yes, too bad about the current violence and destruction of property- especially your CAR Bruno! Really sorry to hear that. I hope, at least, there is some insurance or compensation for something that was not your fault...

bruno021 ( ) posted Sun, 06 November 2005 at 12:59 PM

Thanks Veritas, I'll meet the insurance company tomorrow.

...Now if E-on would just support GeoTiff files and some Geo-Referencing data (which is all free and available on the internet)--then we could overlay terrains in Vue 6 with Free satellite photos and get renders like this...

Adding some trees and clouds and this would look really great!

...well, to escape all this very unfortunate news- I think I'll head over to Maui and look around. After that- over to Tahiti to see how things look there...

bloodsong ( ) posted Mon, 07 November 2005 at 7:39 AM

heyas; just a quick note. that earth map thingy doodle is made up of images that are... i forget how old, but likely a couple years. so if paris IS burning RIGHT NOW, you wouldn't see it on there, anyway.

Veritas777 ( ) posted Mon, 07 November 2005 at 12:44 PM

Heyas Bloodsong- That was noted by me in Post #6: "(And of course- these are NOT Real Time Satellite photos- they were made over a period of the last three years and merged and updated periodically.)" in Post #1: "After reading about the continuing riots in Paris, after nine days (see news link)- I went out searching for any satellite images that might also show smoke rising from Paris- but could not find any..." --Actually, I just wanted a "practical" reason to play with Google Earth's software... The other NASA data websites that cover storms, forest fires, etc. had nothing available on Paris- which I had check earler.

You would be surprized at how fast things end up on Google Earth if it's in the news. Katrina had new images overlays in a single day. The very next day and the whole area done in 3 weeks about. Best go up a few posts and check my link.

The news says they are just youths. Maybe the rage virus has hit Paris? We'll know 28 days later, I suppose.

Well first it's not as bad as american tv is glad to show it. Bagdad is still very far from here! Just angry younsters from the suburbs who were after a nice change from their daily routine of pushing drugs in front of their council buildings. It all started when 2 young guys running from the police ( supposed drug pushers) fried alive when trying to hide in an electricity generator ( hope you understand) They were young, stupid, drug pushers, they sould've been at school, they didn't deserve to die, but they did. S""t happens. Now, it's like they are martyrs because the were from the projects ( concils for uk friends), unemployed ( at 16, pretty normal imho), and from foreign origin. And then bang!
