Subject: Any reason NOT to install SR2?

FishNose ( ) posted Sun, 13 November 2005 at 5:02 PM · edited Mon, 20 January 2025 at 7:20 AM

I've seen reports of: Install doesn't work for some (seems to require SR1 installed first?) Certain issues fixed Certain issues not fixed But no disasters. Is this a correct analysis? :] Fish

As far as I see for most of the users it works fine (for me too)

if you use wardrobe wizard on the Mac computer SR2 will make your WW unusable. I just had to go back to SR1 this weekend.

I'm losing focus on the BODY dial. Before clicking on the name of the figure in the scene, brings up BODY but it occasionally won't respond.

Not to sound like a naysayer, but here are two questions to ask yourself:

  • Does Poser 6 work fine for you? If so, then you probably don't need the SR2 patch.
  • Have you read through the list of issues that SR2 patches? Is there anything on the list that is a "must-have" for you to work more efficiently in Poser? If not, then you probably don't need the SR2 patch. There are some issues that may sound too technical, like "updated memory handling". You should decide whether this is a big enough reason to risk the installation of SR2. Chances are very high that you won't have any problems installing SR2, but what if? --John

Yanno, it's a sad state of affairs when patches/updates are things that people have to consider whether they should install. "What will this update break" is not a question that a user should even have to ask... bonni

I don't know if I would recommend it. I know others have said their renders are faster, but I'm noticing quite a bit of hanging on mine, on re-renders from SR1 scenes.

Another issue I am getting, is that on the library palette, when I choose an item, I am not always getting all of the options at the bottom. Specifically, the options to Create New Figure, and Change Figure. For no reason at all, the options are sometimes there, and sometimes not, on the same objects!

I am fully in agreement with Post 6. Sadly though, it is a question asked every time there is a new Poser update, with good reason.

No problems here so far. If anything, P6 seems to be more stable than it was. And it was already fairly stable most of the time. Outside of the occasional render lockup. Also, P6 SR2 is noticeably faster all of the way around.

Based upon a few day's worth of experience, I'd say that SR2 is definitely worth installing.

I say this with the caveat that I don't consider my testing of P6 SR2 to be comprehensive. I simply haven't had enough time to try everything yet. But overall, it looks very promising.

It's also a question which arises every time that Microsoft Windows gets updated. And other types of software as well -- not just Poser.

It installed without a problem for me, and does seen noticeably faster now.

However, I am now getting "out of memory" errors on renders that wouldn't have been any problem before SR2. :-/

Frankly, I've given up on trying to do complicated scenes in Poser, and then engaging in frustrating attempts to get the scenes to render.

I've taken the expedient of:

  1. Building a single complex scene.
  2. Once the scene is complete: saving several versions of the same file.
  3. Deleting different items/characters from each copy of the central file so as to reduce the system resource demands which Poser makes to get the &%!!!#$_">+=-$%%%!!!! thing to render.
  4. Rendering each resulting "partial" file separately with exactly the same render settings.
  5. Compositing the renders together in Photoshop to get the final "render" that I wanted in the first place.

It's a bit tedious -- but it's a lot less maddening than attempting to get an entire scene to render: a scene which won't render properly in Poser no matter what you do.

I haven't drew sufficient pics until now with SR2, but by the moment all works fine in my P6, and... render time under Firefly really is shorter!!

I don't mind compositing scenes, but I'm now getting out of memory errors on simple portrait shots. One V3, with hair and texture, no clothing, three lights.

" Frankly, I've given up on trying to do complicated scenes in Poser, and then engaging in frustrating attempts to get the scenes to render." This is the exact reason i dont really care that i had to go back to SR1 :-) I render poser animations in Carrarpro4 and sometimes stills in Cinema4D 9.1 I never had ANY issues even BEFORE SR1 becaues i never have and never will rely on poser for anything other than a low res previs environment to setup scenes&animations to be rendered in another program. I had installed SR2 just to be "updated" but when it BROKE my indespensible Wardrobe Wizard plugin I deleted my entire P6 folder without a moments hesitation. reinstalled a fresh factory copy from my backup CD and reinstalled SR1 and just linked to my existing poser4 propack 11 GIG runtime where I have ALL of my content anyway al in all about ten minutes of my weekend oh well la dee da....

And that is just ridiculous, isn't it wolf359? Why must we beta test everything for CL/EF/whoeverownsposeratthemoment?
