Subject: Personally responding to image comments/posts?

thundering1 ( ) posted Thu, 17 November 2005 at 11:46 PM · edited Thu, 09 January 2025 at 7:26 AM

I suddenly feel like a schmuck - reading someone's post to an mage, I got the picture that I should personally respond to messages posted to my images - and I haven't yet at ALL! I'm new to RR (less than a year) and I'm not sure of the protocol - I thought (in my feeble little mind) that if I did that, it would be thought of as asking for more posts on future images. But I'm now getting a vague picture that I need (and haven't yet) to show my "gratitude" for their crit/posts... So I've just read crits/posts that came my way, noted possible changes to make, or was thankful for a positive response, then went on about my day... ...Thoughts anyone? -Lew :-/

You can reply if you want to, but you certainly don't have to. Some people expect it, but there's no reason they should. bonni

You can always post a comment under your own images, just thanking everyone for advice or whatever. Mahray

it's your own choice as to reply or not, it's not required at all by renderosity. it is a good pr type practice, which helps with ratings for the hot 20 etc. but the larger your gallery becomes, the more time it takes to check for comments then. :)

It always felt strange to comment on my comments because I didn't think the people I was answering would return to read it. Did that make sense? I usually try to thank everyone when I post my image because it really is nice when people stop by.

..but what's the acceptable etiquette for replying to responses to complementary comments posted beneath one's most prominent pictures? This could become (alliteratively) asymptotic.

Hmm, it would take a long time to reply by IM to all your comment posters if you get many comments. I visit their galleries and leave comments when I can. Most of us understand that sometimes time is in short supply or ill health makes a visit and replying every time is not possible. Use your own judgement and do the best you can. And happy rendering. :)

I never could understand the reason behind replying to comments in the galleries. I mean,...a gallery is just that...a gallery, not a forum for discussion. I know I've never re-visited an image I've commented on to see "How the discussion is going" and I know that I wouldn't be sent an e-bot saying " Someone has commented on an image that you commented on". Additionally... the ability to write novels and code in the galleries only serves to slow the site down even more. The software has to reserve a record large enough to accommodate all of that text and code, whether you reply with a lengthy novel, or just to say "Cool Pic". For EVERY Image. That's a lot of bloat for no good reason in my opinion. But after all,..it is just my opinion. Tom

I appreciate the posts, folks - starting to feel like I was the kid who never wrote a thank-you card for gifts. I already say something like "thanks for viewing and enjoy" so I think I'll just change it to something like "thanks for viewing and comments" and leave it at that. -Lew ;-)

As far as the acceptable etiquette, Just use your best judgement on this.

First I heard of this. Usually the only complaints I ever see is merchants getting in a huff if someone in the hot twenty doesn't list them as credits to thank them for being able to spend money buying they're stuff and making such pretty pictures with it all. Sometimes I swear people never really buy, they just lease to show! Lol!! Time for my morning lecture at the Church now to find out just how bad I've been this week.

I tend to reply in PM on a comment if the person 'hit the hail on the head' so to speak. If they 'just got it' what I was trying to convey or if they left a comment that I had an instant response to...and then I sometimes will just say thanks if I get bored :) Becki
