Subject: PC Clothing to Mac?

You see a lot of Poser clothing/items that are "PC only"--is there any simple way to convert them to Mac? Thanks--T

I use PC and Mac, all the Poser archives created with PC run fine in Mac. Poser 5 or 6 open all in Mac. Not problem.

I haven't specfically used much PC clothing but all other items, like characters, props, etc, work fine. It helps to have Poser MaConverter, by MartinC. It's available here on Renderosity, just do a search. I think it runs only in OS 9 but it helps with the conversion of PC-specific Poser items over to Macintosh. It has saved me tons of time. If you're reading this MartinC, kudos my friend. Great utility. Ulysses

Okay, thanks. I have Maconverter and have used it on items that have stated that you'll need to convert, but I've always shied away from items that say "PC only"--I'll give it a try. Thanks--T

The only stuff where I take the "PC only" seriously are programs and products that contain python, like some skin shaders in the marketplace here. They don't work on the mac at all.

"PC only" is most commonly used by people who don't know any better. There are very few things that are really "PC only". Poser's Python GUI support differs between Mac and PC (because Poser used a package that was PC-specific), so there are "PC only" Python scripts. There are also, very rarely, products that come in self-extracting .EXE files rather than standard .ZIP files that can be expanded anywhere. There are old Poser 4 PC packages with .RSR previews that the Mac version of Poser doesn't process (ironically since they're really a Mac-specific graphics format that Poser ported to PC without the header data).

There also some Poser pose/prop files that are packaged with full PC file paths like C:Program FilesPoser 5Runtime... instead of the normal "Runtime:..." format. Of course those won't even work on a PC if Poser was installed on the D drive, or they have Poser 6 instead of Poser 5, etc.; they're not so much "PC only" as just badly packaged.

Sometimes Poser products modify copyrighted geometry using encoded packages that can't be used without special software and the original copyrighted mesh (e.g., DAZ V3). Long ago, MacConverter was the only widely available Mac utility to decode these, and it only handled a subset. Now there's a free cross-platform Java RTE decoder, and there's also an Objaction Mover for Mac.

So with the exception of a few Python scripts, "PC only" is just a bug in the package that could have been easily avoided -- or simply mislabeling.

Thanks--I purchased Billy T's "PC only" canvas sneakers (which I really wanted) and they worked great on my Mac after running them through Macconverter. Thanks all! I guess I have some shopping to do... --T

LOL! I remember that feeling. It's like a HUGE toy store opening up right next door. Have fun! (fellow Mac user)

The general reason something other than a program like Tailor or a utility is marked PC only is the creator didn't have access to a Mac or know anyone that had a Mac. I've only found two things that didn't open, both creators error, one was just plain frelled up and the other was corupted in zipping and only seemed to open on the box that zipped it.

Why shouldn't speech be free? Very little of it is worth anything.
