Has anyone bought a membership in the meshfactory (mentioned a few messages ago)? They have 3ds (and other format) models that probably should work in Poser. Is it worth it (the membership is *much* cheaper than buying individual models)?

I'm getting ready to do it. For $139.00 its a pretty good deal, considering the quality of the models. It's about the same price as a good 3D Models CD-ROM Collection and the models are in several formats to suit most needs (3DS, MAX and LWS...)

Anyone tried the 3DCafe Quality Models Membership deal?...

nitreug ( ) posted Sun, 11 March 2001 at 5:44 PM

Does a 3DS file is poseable directly in Poser? IS it poseable in Bryce?

Fox-Mulder ( ) posted Sun, 11 March 2001 at 5:59 PM

Nitreug- You can always move or rotate pieces of a model mesh to pose it (like rotate a tank gun turret) but making something posable, with dials in Poser is a different project. But 3DS should import fine into Poser and Bryce...

So the stuff at meshfactory is no good for me if it is not ready poseable in Poser. I was trying to do a bone structure to a jeep in 3DS. It will take me a year to do so.

I've got the Mesh Factory membership and the downloads are totally ballistic. I use TS4 to disassemble and reassemble the parts that I want, such as their US pilor which should be easily posable in PPP (kinda the reason I got PPP). I just bought a trial membership at 3d Cafe, but was unable to get in to check. The key question on these is whether is initial payment is redeemable in the first downloads ... in the case of Mesh Factory it is. Also, it seems that Mesh Factory adds a number of really good models each month of extremely hight quality. Nitreug - there are very few sites other than this one or links from this one where Poser ready props are available. Most of the props I use are modifications of someone else's cause all I can do in modeling is booleans.

Thanks Huolong. This is not for me NOW at least. I have too many thing on my computer that I do not really use yet.

Fox-Mulder ( ) posted Sun, 11 March 2001 at 8:50 PM

Nitreug- Don't we ALL! I think all the amazing FREE downloads around the internet is nearly overwhelming to catalog and keep track of... I'm still ready to sign up for Mesh Factory, but interested to hear what you think of the 3DCAFE membership, Huolong...

I just bought a trial membership and their site won't let me in. They don't like the password I used. Unable to contact anyone to fix it after several hours. Clock keeps ticking, and so am I.

I had a trial membership to 3d cafe and hated it. They have some good models, but the downloads times were astronomically slow and it was beta, so most of the models I did want wouldn't download correctly anyway. I really felt scammed paying for beta services that I couldn't use. I don't know if they fixed it, because I didn't bother renewing, and they haven't asked me if I want to.

Mesh Factory looks really nice, there models look extremely realistic and they are all textured. I'm to the point that I am weeding out all my bad models and stuff I can't use. So right now I am looking to get some super nice general models etc. and not just downloading a bunch of stuff that don't work. My criteria, if it doesn't load in Poser and 3D Studio Max the first time it gets the boot. But I can't wait to try out Mesh Factory.

I HAVE a Mesh-Factory membership, and here my thoughts as a Bryce, Poser user: - If you want ANYTHING to be posable (like an Apache helicopter for example) you are going to need to have 3DS Max to put things into groups. ***NOTE: A 3DS file will not import into Poser with each part being seperate. Poser does not allow you to move ANY individual parts of a prop. (Fortunately I do have MAX.) - In Bryce you need to UNGROUP everything, then set up small sub-groups and do a lot parenting. Basically making a hierarchy. I downloaded the Apache AH64D and spent about 4 hours making it completly posable in Bryce. If you have the time, know-how, etc. it can be a lot of fun. My Apache now sports completely movable gun, FLIR, electonics pod, rotors, wheels, chaff/flare dispenser, missiles, etc. - Most of the items are VERY high quality, and thus HIGH polygon count ... which will slow POSER down to a chug. IN Bryce it's not so bad. I plan on doing everything in Bryce and then just comping-in the characters in After Effects for the most part. - The models look very good ... they are not quite Viewpoint quality (those kick some serious butt), but the price/quality ratio is outstanding. BTW, another advantage to viewpoint is they make their models available in various detail levels (i.e. polygon AND texture sizes.) - Bottom line, if you are willing to spend the time customizing them for Bryce/Poser you can't go wrong for $139. -Tim

For me it is too much time consuming if you you are not a pro in grouping. More detail should be provided to the users. I think again that 3D sites try to catch people more than to help them. Be carefull people, me and you spend a lot of money for nothing!!!!

I agree with tim, there. I've had a MeshFactory membership for the past two years (just signed up for my third year this month) and while I don't use the more military type models, I do use the architectural, general and household models. I tend to use them more often in Vue d'Esprit than Poser, but I've had no trouble with importing them or getting them to work properly at all and am quite satisfied with the quality of all the models I've used. I don't think grouping as anything to do with importing 3DS figures into Poser. I don't even know how to group, being something of a lone woof. I have found that many 3DS models that I have downloaded call for missing texture files, or have no UV coordinates or those that UV mapper say are screwy. I use 3D explorer to convert them to obj, use UVmapper and add my own texture files. For props that are supposed to be soft, like beds and sofas, I'll import into Poser, magnetize, export as obj, re-map, and re-import. Some PP2's (props) already in Poser format also have goofy or missing texture maps, so they get exported, etc. Disassembly of Mesh Factory props allows me to import tank turrets separate from hulls, guns separate from turrets, and re-assemble them as smart props parenting gun to turret, turret to hull. I look forward to using PPP to make the whole assembly a CR2. I'll also strip weapons, hatches, landing gear, wings etc from one model for use on another. It helps to have a highly detailed model to do this with.
