Subject: O.T.: Web Hosting

Hi all, Im looking for recommendations for good web hosting companies. Ive been working on content for a 3D hobbyist site for a few friends and myself. Nothing too crazy; maybe a couple hundred pics and a few Quicktime movies to start. I dont mind spending a little money, but not too much. (This isnt a moneymaking venture.) I have enough knowledge to build the site myself, but after looking at quite a few different hosting plans, Im confused. The whole bandwidth thing scares me-its not the same as data transfer? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

Here is an excellent one. 10,000 MB storage (which is a whole lot). 500 GB of monthly b bandwidth, which is more than enough for the average site. For the home package you can pay in 2 installments. They have 24/7 live telephone support. I've had a few web hosts, and this is by far the best one I've been with.

The problem with paying very little $$ is that you get very little!! If this is not a money maker why do'nt you see how far you get updating a site on angelfire.com, or 50megs.com?

By not paying much I mean something in the $20-30 per month range (US) I've dealt with free sites before...yuck! :)

I would highly recommend 1 and 1 also. Very good host, I have multiple websites through them without any problems. - Noel

I'm with Webmasters - $9.95 / month, 5GB disk space, 150GB data transfer (which is roughly the same as bandwidth). What it means in this case is that you can use all 150GB on one day if you like, and nothing for the rest of the month. Other hosts may restrict you to an average bandwidth. The best thing is, if you sign up via that link, I get a kickback. ;)

I'll second hawkfyr reccomendation. Mark at A1HostCo does a terrific job for a very reasonable price.

Go with Petunia's recommendation. 24/7 email support (yes, really), 7 days a week phone support. Over last 4 years they've improved the package with numerous upgrades (disk space, bandwidth, web support), free domain, and every upgrade is available to all customers immediately - no resigning, etc. Under $100 per year. And they really are helpful, polite and courteous. And they know their stuff. I have five clients use them, not a single issue with any. And, uniquely I think, one of the most secure CMS's (CPG-Nuke/Dragonfly) is a "one click" install. This includes phpBB derivative and Coppermine Photo Gallery. IM me if you want a link (which will give me a kick back ;-) and I'll give you more info, orientation, help with the decision/setup process if you want.

From looking at all that, it seems that 1 and 1 has the best rates and gives more storage, bandwidth and more or equal services than some hosts that charge double per month. I pay only $4.99 per month for the home package, payable twice a year. Higher packages allow for quarterly payments.

I just registered a site with 1and1. Dissapointed in the Terms of Agreement at the end. THis is what the offer in the link says

"Monthly Transfer Volume 500 GB"

And compare with what it says below.

"2.1.5.

Bandwidth use, including but not limited to data retrieval from Your Web Site, e-mail traffic, and downloads, shall not exceed six gigabytes per month."

6 GB's is substantially less than 500GB's. What's up with that?

Acadia ( ) posted Tue, 29 November 2005 at 7:03 PM

Hmmm, interesting. I didn't see that. Not sure if tech support would know, so I emailed their Billing department. I'll post back when I know something more. All I know is that since I've been with them I've never run out of bandwidth, and last month I maxed out my site storage with files I was trying to save before a reformat. And this month I uploaded (and downloaded twice), the equivalent of 3CD's of files while I was moving things around from hard drive to hard drive, in addition to all the other uploading I have done maintaining my site.

I've used freeservers.com for many years now and I haven't had any real issues with their service and support. But they are really falling behind in volume of space provided per account.

I get a meesly 2GB transfer and 500Mb storage for $7.99 per month. I am going to need to transfer my business site to one that offers more space and offers good monthly transfers for the same rate with similar features.

1&1 may suit my other needs to start but the 6GB limit worries me. Not bad for 4.99 a month but their advertising 500GBs not 6GBs. Acadia if you find something out, let me know.

Quote - I get a meesly 2GB transfer and 500Mb storage for $7.99 per month.

For several years until this past spring actually, I had hosted with bappy.com. When I signed on with them I had no idea about web hosts and it was recommended to me by someone, so I just signed with them. As years went by I started to see that there were other host sites that were much better, offered more and were cheaper. At Bappy.com if I were to renew my site this year, it would have cost me $130.00 USD ($9.99/mth) for the year if I paid in one lump sum, or $160.00 USD ($12.99/mth) if I paid monthly (something they just recently started to allow). What I got for that was: 200 MB of storage space 5GB of monthly bandwidth email support or a user helping user help forum unmoderated guestbook that received all kinds of generic spam Plus I think my domain renewal was something like $60 USD. I maxed out my storage space, and being off on disability right now, I couldn't afford to spend that much money on a hobby site. So it was either take my site off the net, or look around for a cheaper host. A friend suggested 1and1 and after looking into it, I opted to move my domain over to them.

Apparently that 6GB listed is for their free preview packages only. If you have a the paid Home package as I have, you get 500GB of bandwidth per month. Here is their email reply to me:

Quote - Thank you for contacting us. I double checked. The 6 GB applies to free preview packages only. I am showing on your package you have the 500 GB. If you have any further questions do not hesitate to contact us. -- Sincerely Jim Reitnour Billing Department 1&1 Internet Inc.

Acadia - I spoke with Vincent Santarita in Tech Support last night and he verrified that the 6GB limit did not apply to the Home package. Cool deal. I may consider moving some more domains over if 1&1 proves a stable and dependable service. Thanks for the heads up.

My company has used lypha.com for 2 years now. And we are signing up for another 3 years.

Their support has been outstanding, within minutes sometimes.

We have not found better deals from any other big webhost.

I do suggest you take a look at their offers.

JHoagland ( ) posted Thu, 01 December 2005 at 1:27 PM

I used HostOnce before... and like their name says, I hosted with them ONCE. I tried creating ASP pages on their site and they never worked properly (even though they said they supported ASP). I moved to another hosting company and, like magic, the ASP pages worked perfectly. Anyway, I recommend LunarPages and easycgihosting. But, think about your requirements. Do you need databases? Can you use php instead of ASP? Many hosting companies offer lower prices for php sites. And DO NOT use the "free sites". Remember, although they are free for you, the hosting company may bombard your visitors with banners and pop-up windows. Yes, pop-ups can be blocked, but do you really want your website to be full of junky ads? --John

LostinSpaceman ( ) posted Thu, 01 December 2005 at 2:50 PM

Well that doesn't knock them out for PHP sites John. I've never had any need for ASP that I'm aware of. Wouldn't know how to create an ASP page in anycase. You can knock them for one issue but they've served me well for the past 6 years and nary a problem. I've gotta say that 1and1 outfit looks tasty though, twice the storage and 10 times the bandwidth for $2 less a month.

Xena ( ) posted Thu, 01 December 2005 at 4:23 PM

I host 5 sites with Host Once and don't have a problem with them, other than having to pay extra for MySQL db's. I've used them for about 5-6 years. (or longer, I have no concept of net time LOL) But I recommended Host For Web because I find their packages to be more inclusive of things I need.

LostinSpaceman ( ) posted Thu, 01 December 2005 at 4:30 PM · edited Thu, 01 December 2005 at 4:36 PM

I'm not paying a dime extra for MySQL at hostonce. Must be something new. You must be referring to their MS SQL package which is an additional $80 a year. The two packages are not the same.

Xena ( ) posted Thu, 01 December 2005 at 10:19 PM

When I signed up you had to pay $80 per year extra for one single database. That must have changed sometime in the last couple of years. I began with the Microsoft.Net Hosting plan which never included a database (back then), and moved onto the Multiple Domain Hosting a couple of years ago, but never received word that the plan had changed any shrug Good to know :) And that's why I prefer Host For Web. I get unlimited databases so can run everything off it's own db - forum, gallery, store, blog, etc.

richcz3 ( ) posted Fri, 02 December 2005 at 1:36 AM

The Tech Support at 1on1 is great. Toll free phone as well as pretty quick response to emails. I have one domain at Godaddy which is a joke. No toll free lines and automated email responses. I'm not going to jump ship on my other hosting services just yet, but 1on1 is pretty impressive out of the gate. Cost, Capacity, and Support is better than the others right now.

LostinSpaceman ( ) posted Fri, 02 December 2005 at 7:19 AM

Well I have no clue when it changed but I've had my site with them for 6 years but only switched over to PHP with the MySQL two years ago and never got charged more for it. I'm only running a single domain and one database though. Maybe they charge for more than one?
