This is the most amazing display of animated lighting I've ever seen (please see link).

But if you read the comments below the scene, you'll see there is a debate as to whether it's real or computer generated. My questions:

  1. Is it real?
  2. Can something like this be done in Poser?

Thanks in advance. PS: Please watch through to the end. IMO, it's amazing no matter how the person did it!

Its almost impossible to say if it's authentic or not. It's possible it's real, there are companies which make light sequencers. On the other hand someone with a lot of time and a non-linear video editor (like Adobe Premiere) could fake somthing like this as well. The resolution on the vides is so bad, it's hard to look for signs of editing. The one thing that bothers me about it is the icicle lights are first red then later blue, this seems improbable, I've never seen icicle lights which change colors.

Poser definetly has nothing to do with this. Like you say it's pretty cool looking, real or not.

I believe it's real video footage of an actual light show. Someone with the right equipment could rig it up to be controlled by some PC software. In fact, a guy I know in my area does it with his lights every year, and it's similar to what's in this video, although not quite as elaborate. People come from all over the state to see his light show at Xmas.

That is becoming popular. There was a local man who did his house to a melody of Christmas Carols a few years ago. He stopped after neighbors complained about the traffic (people could not even get into the neighborhood most evenings!) I think the Botanical Garden does one as well in one part of the Garden for their Garden of Lights display. The only reason I would not think it was real was the lack of movement in front of the camera of any lights or people. Kind of hard to stop those head lights.

It does look real, it could be filmed late at night to avoid the headlights.

There's an earlier thread in the Bryce forum about this. It's apparently not trick photography. If you're interested the link's above:

It's very obvious that it's real. But for those of you who doubt it, this website here has all the info and other videos to view. -jjsemp

Thanks for the links, guys. Yes, I find this stuff very interesting. I thought it was real also. Volfin, I know Poser wasn't used here. I was wondering if Poser's lighting and animation could be used to create something similar.

It could probably be done using poser 6.

ARGH!!! OK I am not an Xmassy type person and I am usually live and let live. But if you were a close neighbour to this guy could you imagine it? After making sure everyone in the family had spoons in their mouths for the repeated seizures they would suffer, the near misses from confused aircraft, the UFO's attempting to land...IT'S ONLY DEC FIRST!! Don't you think you might become a bit unhinged and at the very least make a late, late night visit with wire cutters?

"Don't you think you might become a bit unhinged and at the very least make a late, late night visit with wire cutters?" Denton County, TX? It may still be illegal to even posess wirecutters and the law is generally pretty lenient on shooting tresspassers here in Bushland :-) There was a special on the other night about the trend for building obscenely large mega-houses. To me these light displays also sometimes cross the line between good holiday cheer and tasteless ostentation. But why put the money in the Salvation Army kettle when you can spend it on electricity? Bah Humbug!
