Subject: Windows XP Pro supports 4 gbs of memory

lately there have been concerns on this forum about memory... If you are running Windows XP Pro your system can support up to 4gbs of memory....

Yes it can, I have 4g on my pc. Problem is Windows only allows any one application to use 2G. So even if you have 4G on your pc, the most Vue would be able to use is 2G.

But technically you could have Vue open twice, could you not, and then have each using 2G?

Totally a waste having more than 2gb with 32bit windows.
It's more about the swap disk space. When using VUE, up your swap disk space to avoid (Most of) the out of memory errors.
There are also plenty of "how to's" out there on optimizing disk cache/swap space- like having the swap file at the font of your fastest HardDisk. Just remember with VUE though, that you want PLENTY of swap space.

Also..is anyone using VUE on 64bit Windows yet?
It'll only run in 32bit emulation mode I know but, I'm curious as to whether it (64bit XP) takes advantage of the extra memory allocation available?

Cheers.

I don't believe 64 bit Windows is any help- at this point. It may actually cause 32 bit software to run even SLOWER! Check out the above link for some interesting system specs running a Terragen file. Note that one of the renders was done with 64 Bit Windows- with no appreciable difference- if not SLOWER. (You need to click on the Terragen Rendering Benchmark on the LEFT side...) A FAST 64 Bit Athlon Processor running Windows XP SP2 seems to lead the pack...

"It is possible to increase the 2GB per program limit under WinXP 32 to 3GB including virtual memory."

Executables that can use the 3-GB address space are required to have the bit IMAGE_FILE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE set in their image header. This requires E-on "the developer" of the executable, to have already specified a linker flag (/LARGEADDRESSAWARE)with in the executable.

Im' not sure if this is the case (I doubt it). Can some one from E-on confirm as to whether or not the (/LARGEADDRESSAWARE) linker flag is present with in the VUE5i .exe?

Well, I tested Vue5i on Win64, and it crapped out when hitting the 2 GB limit. Apparently that bit is not set. It's not just the bit, I think. Probably it'll need a recompile to fix up the pointers. Then again, a recompile of the current source shouldn't be too much trouble.

Well, a lot of 'professional' 3D software already provide 64bit versions (e.g. Cinema4D). As Vue5I aims at the professional market, they also should provide a 64bit version by next year. They should do that for xFusion (for C4D) anyway, or 64bit users will be angry about the limitations.

I certainly hope they'll do it soon. Maybe in two stages, first a recompile that makes Vue a 32bit app that's able to use 3 GB - good for Win32 users - and then a full 64bit version. Most new hardware comes with 64bit CPUs. Timee to move to the 64bit world, e-on (and e-frontier!)

Hm, whenever i add more memory to my system, some genius somewhere fills it up with unessesary thingamajig applications.
I have found it all a losing battle, sadly victory goes to the animated Paperclips of the world.
Am I cynical or just being realistic?

Sometimes it feels like a geometric progression. Each new version of an Operating System or major application needs double the RAM the previous version did. Of course if you upgrade the OS and the app at the same time ...
