I'd appreciate it if you'd remove my image from the FWW. Thank you.

Thanks for spotting a few I missed again!

Fractals will always amaze me!

TonyYeboah, I'm curious about why you want your image removed. Do you care to share the reason? It's OK if you don't. Just wondering Keith

I think the majority of members do not mind their images being displayed or not displayed in the FWW. By default we can vote for other members images. This subjects us all to being judged for what we have created. Indeed, if any one person is not happy with this situation then maybe Renderosity is not the place to display their images. My gallery here is used for two purposes - to share my creations and request feedback from other artists. I'm only too glad to see other members creations and hope they don't mind the occasional comment/vote. After all this is a Community. I request members to give feedback on my images whether it be positive or negative or just a bit of advice. To have an image displayed in the FWW is an encouragement and I'm not part of the "notability within an illusionary hierarchy" - just another unknown artist who loves creating fractal art.

I don't believe in rating art. Leaving comments is fine, but anything that separates "good from bad" art is wrong in my eyes and doesn't encourage a community of art appreciation. I know that the FWW and the Hot 20 and the other lists are supposed to give people something to aim for, but what happens if they don't make it? These lists create a divide between the people who are on them and the people who are not. While it may start out as inspiration for you to improve. If you never make it into one of these lists then by definition your "art is bad" because if it was any good you would be on the list. Do we really need to put more pressure on people to be "included" when all we should really be doing is enjoying art.

TonyYeboah While I tend to agree with you, I do believe that the FWW is more for choosing a variety of fractal styles to be displayed and really has nothing to do with voting, good or bad art, etc. I very rarely vote and never rank any posted images. Just my opinion. Again, a very nice selection this week. Great variety of styles. Thanks for picking one of mine. Marion

The 'Fractal of the Month' is chosen from the images in the FWW. People vote for which they think is best. The FWW is all about judging art and i'm against it. I'm not trying to convert people into my way of thinking. If other people like to rank and vote for art then no worries, you carry on. I'm just trying to inform the moderators that I don't want to be included in it. Next time i'll send an IM. Sorry for the trouble.

Thanks for explaining.

No worries, Keith. It's always a pleasure to explain myself.

TonyYeboah "The 'Fractal of the Month' is chosen from the images in the FWW. People vote for which they think is best. The FWW is all about judging art and i'm against it." So am I. That is why when the Fractal of the Month was started, I told Nick and Barb that I would not be voting as I did not approve. I predicted problems with this at some point in the future. But I do think is is nice to see the various styles of fractals chosed for the FWW. I just wish there was no voting. Marion

I agree, Marion. Personally, I think the vintage showcase is a much better idea. It not only shows the history of fractal art on Renderosity but also lets you see art by some people that no longer post here. Kudos to whoever thought that up. Thank you, to the moderators for removing my picture from the FWW.

Deagol ( ) posted Thu, 08 December 2005 at 12:08 PM

I don't see the FWW as a problem. I look at it as a fair compromise between the hot 20, where you have to be popular to be recognized, and nothing at all. Judging, competition or whatever you want to call it, is built into this place. There's no getting away from it unless you get away from here. Even image views are counted, so by being here you indirectly choose to play the game. With the FWW, a new or unpopular person has equal chances against a Rykk or a Maud. It's cool that Barb and Nick are willing to remove people who don't want to play the FWW, but the only way to completely remove yourself from the big game is to not play it at all.

TonyYeboah ( ) posted Thu, 08 December 2005 at 4:53 PM

I agree, everything is a compromise. It all comes down to what we personally will accept. Speaking for myself, I will accept that views, comments and votes are linked to rating lists (for want of a better word), but don't accept the FWW, Competitions and other lists. The reason I accept the first 3 is because I can't do anything about them and they will probably never affect me anyway. It's very unlikely that I will ever get enough views, comments or votes to make it into one of the corresponding lists. On the other hand, competitions are voluntary, so I just won't enter any and it will never affect me. The only other thing is the FWW which has now been dealt with. I could have just deleted the image myself from my gallery but then no-one would know how I felt about it. This way there is less chance of me getting picked again because the moderators know how I feel about it. So now I can just get on with making my art and showing it to people without having to worry about any of the things I dislike about this site. That goes down as a success in my book. This is a community not a dictatorship. If you have a problem with something then ask to have it changed. The worst they can do is say "no" but if you don't ask, then you won't get. It's been true for thousands of years and it's still true. Tony.

Hi all! Thanks for the thoughts on the FWW. Thought I'd explain what the FWW was/is supposed to be :D We started it as a way to show others more of what our gallery is comprised of. We started it as a way to show the many different styles and programs that are used. More of a quick glance of the whole. Something that an outsider could look at and say "Holy crap! That's Fractal art?! I gotta check out the rest of that gallery!" This also gave us a chance to showcase many who had not or may not have a chance in the Hot 20. Of course, if someone does not want their image to appear in it, that's okay too...just let us know. Tony- Thanks for explaining. We really appreciate it :D Now...the Fractal of the Month... Yes, we see the points made on it. Please note it was meant with best intentions. We wanted another way to recognize artists here, and a way to fill that 'Featured Fractal' spot on the Community page. Being that our gallery is one of the largest on Renderosity, it would be way too time consuming to try a vote on the entire gallery. So, we thought of just using the FWW for it...narrowing the choices a bit. Of course, as we make our weekly selections there are sooo many that should be recognised. So, we do see that it has not worked very well. In fact, we see that it is pretty much going against what the FWW was supposed to stand for, and we really don't want to destroy that. That said, we are going to discontinue the FOM/FOY. But, we are working on other things for the new year that all may enjoy :D Hope everyone is well and groovy, and having a great weekend! Nick

I want to add a thank you to all for the respectful manner in which this thread was conducted. Of course it's impossible to make everyone happy or to agree in every aspect, but we care and listen. And it's much easier to listen this way :D Barb

This FWW now contains a broken link. I had the idea that one might ask the artists whose images are displayed there for permission and then set a database lock against deleting images that appear in the FWW. Then we would be able to enjoy complete FWW's in future. Andreas
