You probably need to adjust your lighting set-up! thefixer, poser coord.

The normals are reversed. With P6, you can check "normals forward" and fix it. I don't think there's any way to fix it in P5. I suspect if you reverse the normals with the grouping tool, the top of the wings will then be black.

This is an old model, made for Poser 4. Poser 4 didn't care about reversed normals. A lot of old models have this problem, unfortunately.

I've used the Mil Dragon in both P5 and 6 and not had black wings! Try adjusting your lights, I'm not saying randym's wrong, he may well be right, try both! thefixer, poser coord.

It's not lighting. And it's only the underside of the wings. Have you done any renders in P5 that show the underside of the wings?

Hi Randym, come to think of it, probably not! My dragon's usually like me, half asleep [rofl]. I did a couple of flying ones but it was kinda face on! See the link! Done in P5

Here's what the preview window looks like when the bottom of the wings are shown. There's no doubt about the problem being reversed normals. There's a way in P5, in the Material Editor, to link to some nodes to fix the problem, but I can't remember the solution. It's a pity that the solution was never added to the manual and even more of a shame that it was never fixed in P5.

randym77 ( ) posted Mon, 12 December 2005 at 4:11 PM

Yup, it's definitely reversed normals. For reasons I've never been able to figure out, sometimes reversed normals are that odd, yellowish "parchment" color, and sometimes they are dead black. But you know it's reversed normals when you can't change the color.

If there's a way to fix it in the material room, I'd like to know. Sometimes a little bit of displacement helps, but it doesn't seem to work on the dragon.

thefixer ( ) posted Mon, 12 December 2005 at 4:15 PM

Isn't ther a "tick box" to change it, "normals forward" or something! I have to confess it's not something I've bothered with before, I bow to your greater knowledge! thefixer, poser coord.

Where in P6 do you fix the normals. I brought the image into P6 and can't find what you're talking about. And if this is a problem, why hasn't DAZ fixed it????

It's in the Material Room. The very last item on the menu. Check "normals forward" for the Wing Membrane material zone, and the problem should be fixed.

thefixer ( ) posted Mon, 12 December 2005 at 4:19 PM

There's a tick box in the material room for "normals forward" but I don't know if that will fix it! thefixer, poser coord.

I think you have to use the advanced material room, not the simple. Unfortunately, DAZ's support of Poser 5/6 is spotty at best. At least are supporting P5 for some items now. For a long time, they didn't support P5 at all.

Maybe you just need to scroll down more? I'm pretty sure normals forward has been in P6 since before SR2. Maybe it was part of SR1?

Here's a quickie belly shot with "normals forward" ticked. It's the MilDragon 3 green texture. With normals forward unchecked, the wings are black, like in your first image.

Latexluv ( ) posted Mon, 12 December 2005 at 4:42 PM

Well I didn't even install SR1, so I probably don't have it, that's why I'm downloading SR2 right now. I have pretty much stuck with P5 since P6's lighting system is a mystery to me.

Okay, installed SR2, and now that option is in the Material Room, clicked it and wings are fixed. Thank you all so much! Been screwing with this for a couple of hours and couldn't figure out what was soooooo wrong.

Looks good!

Probably a good thing that you applied the patch. Poser 6 was a little wonky in the original release.

And hey, maybe you'll find you like P6. I love it. Though I don't use the fancy new lighting much. It's complicated. And usually really slow to render.

Talos ( ) posted Tue, 13 December 2005 at 2:06 AM

Scarey! I love the dragon, and haven't tried it in P6 yet. Will this fix Sharkeys angel wings? This type of thing is the reason I still use Poser 4 for some things.

randym77 ( ) posted Tue, 13 December 2005 at 5:37 AM

Yes, checking "Normals Forward" will fix Sharkey's wings.

With the wings, you can also reverse the normals with the grouping tool. (For Poser 5, say, which doesn't have the "Normals Forward" option.) Sharkey's wings are inside out, as Poser sees things, so reversing the normals fixes the problem.

You can't do that with the dragon wings, because you're looking at both sides of one surface. If you reverse the normals, the top of the wings will be wrong.
