Subject: OT. Narnia

Saw Narnia a little while ago. An excellent film with great CG, something along the lines of Lord of the Rings with a quasi big battle scene more geared towards pre-teens but very enjoyable. Good family film.

I agree. I was especially happy with Mr. Tumnus, who looked and acted exactly like a faun (instead of a CG faun). I think they did an excellent job of bringing the atmosphere of the books to the screen; I'm also happy that they made it a kid's movie instead of an adult movie. Chronicles of Narnia was a children's series and it's good to see the powers-that-be recognizing that. I'd like to see Chronicles of Anthropos made into a series of films, but that will never happen. They really are good books, though.

Haven't seen it yet but my son has. He agrees it's really good. CS Lewis was an awesome author. I've been giving "The Screwtape Letters" a second look just this week.

Hey I just got home from seeing Narnia! It was quite fun.

We just saw Narnia tonight. I got home five minutes ago. Half my crew saw it last week, including my wife, 16-year-old and 14-year-old, and they recommended we go see it. Tonight, I went with my 11-year-old daughter and my 8-year-old son. We thought it was a magnificent film. I really thought it was the best adaptation of "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" by far, of course. Liam Neeson was the voice of Aslan, and the lion was just amazingly real. Dawn French was the voice of the she-beaver. I'm a big Dawn French fan, so that was quite a surprise. Anyway, I totally agree about the faun. All the talking animals and mythical figures were just too cool. Obviously, I can't say enough about it. It was good to see C.S. Lewis on the big screen. He's a great story teller, as well as one of the greatest apologists extant.

"I'm a big Dawn French fan....." Yes, She is big...... This one doesn't appeal. I remember reading the book, L,W&W but wasn't that impressed. Still, while other kids were reading this, I was reading Alistar MacClean....

I have a question for you who have already seen it: Narnia is coming in the theatres here on dec. 25th, and we're going with all 6 kids to see it. But... here it's recommended for over 11 yrs old... the youngest kid is 6. We plan on taking them all anyway, but is it really too scary for 6-yr-olds??

No ek-art, the film is targeted at a young audience, your kids will love it. Like I said, very similar to LOTR but at a lesser scale and there is the topic of death but also resurrection so its a no lose situation and at the end, everyone (good guys) are accounted for. You and the family will have a good time with this film. Go se it.

Ang25 ( ) posted Sun, 18 December 2005 at 7:59 AM

Ek-art, there is no gore in this film, the violence is very PG, but there is violence and death. And that could be traumatic to young kids who may not understand it. Also, if a child is predisposed to a fear of being taken from their parents, the scene at the train station could be upsetting. All in all its very kid friendly, but it does have some parts that could scare a young child. Also, the talking animals are very very realistically done. This might also disturb some children. Oh but those beavers were great. I loved the friendly, husband wife exchanges between them. :-D I hope you all enjoy it, its definately a great kids movie.

I plan on seeing it today with my 7 year old. If she gets upset at any of it, I'll let you know. My 23 year old saw it and said it was the best movie he ever saw (this after seeing Harry Potter).

It only starts on December 29 here. Ten days. :-(

I've been drooling over it since they started releasing the featurettes and trailers.

And since it's apparently my day for introducing off topic posts into OT threads:

Studio Ghibli is doing an anime version of LeGuin's Earthsea. It will be directed by Goro Miyazaki, son of Hayao Miyazaki. THE Hayao Miyazaki. The father is apparently not entirely happy with studio's choice of director, but we'll see how everything resolves.

Bryster-- Meh, I was reading Narnia in first or second grade. Never could get into Alistar MacClean. My father really liked him, though. =) I'm more of a fan of Isaac Asimov, E.E. "Doc" Smith, and of course always Robert A. Heinlein.

SNL is still on?..;) Hmm.. I Robot was Asimov, and Heinlein actually is involved with 3, Startship Troopers, the Puppet Masters, and actually worked on one in the 50's, called (I think) Destination Moon. Doc Smith I don't know enough about..

Meh, "I, Robot" is a movie done in the same style as Asimov's masterpiece, rather than an adaptation of a book. Starship Troopers is by far one of the worst book to film adaptations I've ever seen, in my opinion. Haven't seen "The Puppet Masters"; somehow seeing Donald Sutherland nude is not high on my priority list right now =) Haven't heard of "Destination Moon"; according to IMDB it's based off of Heinlein's "Rocketship Galileo" (which I also haven't heard of =) To the best of my knowledge, no film adaptation of the famous "Lensman" series has yet been attempted, except for some unknown Japanese version that no one's heard of with the very imaginative title "Lensman: Power of the Lens". Sounds like a flop to me; I guess it never made it over here to America.

Well, my 7 year old was a bit scared at a few spots, but in a good way, not crying. And she sat still for the entire movie - that's almost a first... No blood or gore in any scenes. One of the best movies by far that I have seen. Loved the music!
