Subject: What happens to WinZip when demo period expires?

Nance ( ) posted Thu, 22 December 2005 at 7:04 PM · edited Mon, 23 December 2024 at 1:56 AM

Was going to DL the new verion 10.0, but don't want to get bagged. Do you still just get a nag screen or does it really quit at the end of the 45 day demo period?

pakled ( ) posted Thu, 22 December 2005 at 7:11 PM

there's zip programs all over the net. To be honest, I think it just bugs you every time you use it.

Kinda wanted to make sure. I'd been using PKZip since Win95 days, then updated it recently --- and that sucker actually stopped at the end of the demo period! I could not find the original DL for the prior version so could not reinstall. Don't want to fall for that trick again and would rather just keep using my current WinZip version if v10.0 pulls the same gag. Anyone actually passed 45 days on v.10.0?

You might want to look at 7-Zip as a free alternative.

Dunno 'bout version 10, but I have 9.0 and all it does is nag. Works just fine, must upgrade & register whenever I get around to it.

Acadia ( ) posted Thu, 22 December 2005 at 10:00 PM

If you don't register it, you can still use it, but it rifles through all of the days you have had it on your computer before it will give you a zip button. After you have been using it awhile, it becomes really annoying having to wait for it to finish going through the "days on your computer archive". Also, the "zip" and "unzip" buttons move around each time you use it. So it might be in the middle once, and then on the left the next time. The older program (a few versions back), still allow you to use them too without having to wait for the archive to be run through.

sometimes newer isn't always better.

I must remember to remember what it was I had to remember.

I'm still using older (registered) versions of winzip and winrar that I bought in 2001, so i haven't even looked at the newer versions in awhile.

Hm, you mustn't be hitting a button fast enough. Mine never does that unless I let it, though the moving button's a wee bit annoying, especially if you don't know to watch for it.

LostinSpaceman ( ) posted Thu, 22 December 2005 at 11:22 PM

Actually in Version 9.0 the "Use Evaluation Version" Button stays greyed out until it hits about 50% of the "days used past evaluation period" and then you can click on it and open the zip.

Online Now!

Fortunately with XP you don't need Winzip ;)

You should simply buy it as "demo" means that you may try it for a limited time. Much noise is made here when some vendor finds his/her work being on another site by someone else. people lose their membership because they use some pixels that were created by someone else. Everyone here agrees this is the way to go. And you do the same. You use a demo long after it expired. So either buy it, or buy another app (or XP) that can do the same.

I have tried prudent planning long enough. From now I'll be mad. (Rumi)

IZArc is another freeware archive utility which includes RAR and GZ support amongst many others. There's little you can do to add features to something like that; WinZip 10 doesn't seem to have an awful lot to recommend it over one of the earlier versions.

Another free alternative that works great is ZipGenius.

I've been able to unzip files with the built in unzipping feature in XP, but can you zip files too? I would like one program that can deal with both .rar and .zip files. I can't stand having multiple programs on my computer that do almost the same thing. One thing I like about Winzip over Winrar is that if a zip file has corrupt files in it, it will flag them and still allow you to continue. I've found that if a .rar file has some corrupt files in it, that you can't get any of the files out. At least I've never been able to.

I use the built in "zip" program (whatever it's called) in XP for all of my .zip files, and I haven't had anyone complain that they can't open them yet ;).

I've been able to unzip files with the built in unzipping feature in XP, but can you zip files too?<< Right-click on the file and in the context menu select "send to >> compressed (zipped) folder".

Alladin software has a program called Stuffit that can do rar's, I believe (shows up on a Google search, as I remember) I think it even does zips as well. There's a free version, but you may have to hunt a bit..

I've used Quick Zip for years now and am very impressed by it and it's free. Here's a picture of all the file associations it will handle.http://www.quickzip.org/

Byrdie ( ) posted Fri, 23 December 2005 at 11:09 AM

Well, I was going to buy the new WinZip, or maybe WinRar, but maybe I'll try one of those free programs instead.

DCArt ( ) posted Fri, 23 December 2005 at 11:32 AM

Don't want to fall for that trick again and would rather just keep using my current WinZip version if v10.0 pulls the same gag. It won't pull the same gag if you purchase it. If I like demo software, I buy it. It seems the right thing to do if I'm going to use it.

ratscloset ( ) posted Fri, 23 December 2005 at 1:07 PM

I bought 8.0. I was suppose to get the next version free, but I never could get it to accept the reg number. I started using a couple different programs. 7Zip is the latest I just heard of. I tried WinRAR, but I did not care for its interface (of the version I tried) I am not sure if stuff was disabled or if it was just a wonky version. I also tried Weapons and I liked that but I reinstalled it recently and can no longer get it to handle anything other than RAR? XP's version seems a bit clunky to me, and it seems you have less control than with WinZip.

Thanks for all the alternatives. I must say I was getting tired of re-paying for the same old software.
