Subject: Mac Problems! Need help...

nightmyst ( ) posted Thu, 15 March 2001 at 3:43 PM · edited Fri, 26 July 2024 at 2:53 AM

Okay, I have a Mac and I have the converter to make PC files Mac fiels, but a lot of the time, the conversions do not work and the little picture of the cartoon guy shrugging will show up in the place of the preview picture of what I converted. Anybody else have this problem Mackies? Well, I was wondering if anyone knew why or how to fix it, and if anyone knew of sites that had Mac-ready realistic hair and Mac-ready face and body morphs? Thanks! NightMyst

But does the prop/figure/hair/etc. load OK? If so, the shrugging man is no problem! Just re-save the item to the library (using the same name if you wish, to replace the old one): a NEW thumbnail will be created and replace the shrugging man. Now, what could be going wrong in the first place. You get, say a PP2 file and a like-named RSR file? You drag them both to Macoonverter? You let Maconverter do its thing? Afterward the RSR file is no longer there? The thumbnail contained in the RSR file has been converted to the same thumbnail in the resource fork of your PP2 file. If you do all of this, you should NOT get the shrugging man.

Well, all that happens and I get all happy...sometimes! :o( I get errors saying it can't find stuff and I'll go to "find file" to try to locate what it can't, and it's not on my computer at all. It's strange, I know. And none of the .obj stuff EVER converts properly for me! It's upsetting because I want to use the things I waited so long to download with a stupid 56K modem (cos cable modems aren't out in my town ATM), and I can't. As for the shrugging men, I tried to get the files to load and none of them do. :o( Is this a hopeless case do you think? Thank you for your help!

Is the 'converter to make PC files Mac files' a drag and drop Applescript, or is it the Poser Maconverter that doozy mentioned? As for the problem with files not found, that is caused by Poser looking to a path on a different machine. MartinC (the author of Poser Maconverter) has another program called Poser Macinstaller which offers a drag-and-drop solution to this problem. Look in Free Stuff.

Well, it's called Maconverter and I seem to remember that MartinC was the author of it, but it has the drag and drop option, which is what I use mostly because I convert hundreds of files at a time. Perhaps the number of files is a problem? Do you think it may "mess up" (I can't say corrupt) files when I do so many at once? I have tried putting the files through the converter again after they cannot be read, but it doesn't do anything to change the circumstances. :o( And thank you! I will check out free stuff for the macinstaller. NightMyst

Sounds like the files arn't filed properly within the Poser Runntime folder. Make shure to read the "read me" files that come with the stuff you download & follow the directions as to where to file the parts. Sometimes there is no such information & you just have to wing it. When you try to load a newly downloaded & converted "thing" & Poser says "can't find . . . " then write down the info in the pop-up window. It gives you an idea of where it should be & what the name of the thing is that the cr2 is calling for. Then do a search in the finder on your OS to find the "thing" & drag it to the folder Poser expects it to be filed in. Sometimes a texture (or object) has been re-named after the cr2 was written, once in awhile a lower case letter has been changed to a cap. Poser isn't too forgiving on things like that.

Hello, various things... you are not very specific in your description like "won't load" - does this mean that Poser doesn't show the files, shows them but throws errors during opening, or even crashes? Without more details, a couple of likely explanations: 1) Poser ProPak (aka PPP) does no longer create .rsr files, instead the thumbnails ship as .png files. Under pre-PPP Posers, the file will therefore convert without the preview and might/will cause trouble on opening. 2) Sometimes the .rsr files are just missing in the download archive. 3) The "missing texture" requests are not really a bug but simply the average and common welcome-to-Poser blues... If it asks, just try to locate it - if you can't, cancel it. Poser might ask you multiple times for the same texture - be patient. If you do it this way, be aware that Poser won't update you file - next time you open, same marathon. To avoid this, either re-save the figure once you opened it, or (better and definitely recommended) get Macinstaller and fix it permanently. 4) This also avoids a whole universe of possible installing mistakes - but make sure to read the manual at least once very carefully. It's a very powerful tool which offers many options to suit your individual preferences, and it's best to understand and set it up before you start using it. 5) There is most likely nothing wrong with the .obj files - I guess you are curious about the "PC" icon they get. This is perfectly normal, because they are a PC file format, and there is no natural mapping on Mac. The important aspect is not the icon but the fact that Poser properly recognizes them as TEXT files after the autotyping. If you ask 10 Mac Poser users, you'll get votes for 10 different mappings... if I ever get very bored I should probably customize this...

I've been using the combination of Maconverter and Macinstaller and they work super, never have any problems. You have to tell Macinstaller where your Poser lives the first time, after that everything goes automatically. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Macinstaller expects the files to be in their heirarchial folders, in other words a Runtime folder, with a Geometry and Texture folder inside it, and then other folders inside that. This is a way a proper Zip should be set up when you download it, the only reason it wouldn't be like this would be something like a prop that only has files that go in one place. Anyway, just dump the Runtime folder from the Zip on the Maconverter icon, when it finishes dump it on the Macinstaller Icon. Macinstaller asks one question, the top box will usally say "Runtime", change that to the name you want to be on the Caracter Library page (like "Supermodel Vickie clothing"). In my opinion, the Max stuff is aeasier than the PC stuff, if there are any Objaction files to be converted Macinnstaller (or maybe it is Macconverter) will do that automatically.

Macinstaller does not depend on a hierachical source structure, it accepts all library files no matter where they sit. However, if the original source structure is very chaotic (including renamed files etc.) it might fail to silently find some referenced files and prompts you instead. The "default" name in the "New" field is always the name of the outermost folder you dragged on it - it assumes that models you want to install typically sit in a single folder with a useful name.

Thank you guys soooo much! You've all been very helpful. :o) I downloaded the Macinstaller last night and will be trying it out when I get home from work tonight. I'm sure it will work great---I've seen enought testimonial to believe that! :o) Thanks again! NightMyst
