Subject: VueRealism.Com - a general question

RyanSpaulding ( ) posted Fri, 06 January 2006 at 10:35 AM · edited Sat, 30 November 2024 at 12:43 PM

Hey guys, As I've mentioned in the recent past, I'm starting a Vue 'realism' site. I now own the domain. Designed as a constantly updated resource for us Vue users looking to get the most realism out of this product, I'm curious as to if people out there are up for contributing at all. I want to tackle all aspects in getting as real of a still image as we can get...dealing with various problems like realistic lawns, interior lighting, and precise material mapping. No e-commerce. No true forum like this (maybe a problem-specific one where we post a problem and try to fix it). I'll have either Flash Tuts or downloadable PDFs that would be step by step fixes or tactics to use. Each month (or sooner if wished) I'll tackle a totally new image. This in no way will compete with Renderosity (how could it), but I instead intend to use it as a resource for all of us. The reason I'm doing this is it seems a lot of the tuts are old and dont apply, use outdated versions of the program, and many many links are broken and gone. This site wont just 'go'. I want it to be a resource well into Vue 6 and Vue 7. So, the question remains, honestly, does anyone feel this is: a) needed or wanted? b) worthy enough of some outside contribution for you users? I just know I'm not near enough of a guru to handle ALL the work and problems and am curious if you guys are willing to have your brains occasionally picked so we can solve some of these issue and dont hear the same problems all the time. If it's not really needed/wanted, I will just develop it bare bones for myself. If wanted, I'll put more effort into it.

At one time a few years back there use to be a few good Vue sites that were used a lot by vue users. Gebes was one that I remember well. A link to it in the backroom has now been removed. Will it be a Vue help site or a commercial pay as you go site. There are getting to be more forums for vue that I hate to say it but I don't want to see this one here at Renderoisty loose its members because I think its the best place thats ever been for Vue users to get help. I know a lot of people have left and gone to greener pastures but here is my favorite place when I need help. I am curious what others say as well.

Help site, NOT for pay and also NO standard forum for standard questions. I and mods would be the only ones able to post new topics. We dont need another general forum. This one does the job perfect. I do however feel we need a resource site as the Backroom, while sometimes helpful, is outdated in many of it's tuts and links.

That sounds good to me and proably could be linked from backroom here as other sites have in the past. That would have to be oked by agiel. We do need more people involved with free help since a lot of Vue users use it only for hobby and never receive any money for their work. We will all miss gebes site because it contain so much free stuff for Vue users.

I think it sounds like a very worthy venture. The trend today is towards paying - some of us remember when tutorials were free - so it would be very welcome to see free tutorials, free help if possible. I too very much miss Guita's site and I would love to see a way they could be brought back online, either with contributors' help re paying for a site. :)

sounds good to me

Agree, we could use free resources. As to contribute, I'd be happy to share what I know, and realism is something I tend to do in my Vue work. Though I agree, Renderosity has always been the first place that comes to my mind when I need help, and I wouldn't want this forum to be abandoned. On the other hand, I don't think this would be a problem too soon. So, count me in!

It would never be a problem. I have ZERO interest in building an all purpose site demanding as this. This is for the benefit of us.

I think it's a good idea.

I'm also developing free Vue tutorials, models and photo textures at my e-book ecommerce site. Ecommerce sites and free stuff are not at all mutually exclusive, since one of the ways to sell digital products is to attract visitors with free stuff. Some of my tutes are very basic, others touch on realism, like my first Vue tutorial on camera lens focal lengths and their surprising effects on your images.

Also, i like having more than 1 good Vue forum (not that you are planning such). About 3 seems best to me. That way, you get different perspectives and different approaches to what a forum should be.

This sounds very interesting to me, too. I'm just starting out with Infinite and have loads of stuff to learn - but once I get forward (which usually takes its time as I can't spend too much time on the computer...), I'd be happy to share things I have come across. Seems to me, there is a big need for newer Vue help - as mentioned, the manual is very basic and not too much into creative usage of the possibilities.

Yes... we need a Vue resource site... The links at the Backroom here and links at E-On are really out of date...and appear to be dead links...

I have not had too much success in the past with the usual "Web Rings", but hows about all of us who have Vue tutorials linking our sites to each other? Of course this should be voluntary (in case you don't like the quality of a site, or it's very spammy, etc.). And no requirement that links be on home page (as some Web Rings do require). It would help the Vue users and also help we site owners to rank better in the search engines. Better we should help each other than compete - don't you agree? _jc Art-Head-Start.com Art training e-book for digital artists. Free chapter on lighting, some tutorials and models.
