Subject: Mac conversion in Poser 5 and 6 formats is not necessary

Fringewood ( ) posted Fri, 06 January 2006 at 11:49 AM · edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 12:30 PM

I keep seeing merchants and freebie authors post that conversion is required for Mac users to use PC items in Poser 5 & 6 format. Poser 5 & 6 have the identical format in Mac and PC. Conversion between Mac and PC has been totally unnecessary since ProPack. The only exception is if RSR files are used to replace PNG, PICT, etc. The same is true for PC, but it's automated in PC, and that is Poser 4, after all. Mind you that conversion in most cases doesn't damage the Poser 5 & 6 files, since it doesn't see a need to convert and merely rewrites it as is. This applies for both PC files going to Mac and Mac files going to PC. They are 100% compatible. So if someone creates something entirely in Poser 5 or 6, the PC to Mac conversion notice needs not be present. Only if parts or all of the items were created using Poser 4 or Pro Pack or earlier do the files need to be converted.

esther, try martin c.'s or fmorgan's MacConverter - they may fix 'em. otherwise, just resave the item to a library and it should create a proper png file.

macconverter is for poser 5 but it sometimes works for poser 6 shruggy men. Love esther

The OS X MacConverter only converts RSR to PNG. You need the matching PNG or PICT with an identical name at startup. Sometimes if it's stubborn, resave your startup preset in preferences. Often that will get rid of shruggers when there are PNG's in place.

huh? i don't understand what you mean - which startup preset (what r startup presets) where? poser preferencem system or macConverter? Love esther

Dear Esther, I think Fringewood's talking about the General Preferences (command-K), where you can set the "launch to preferred state," "use external binary morph targets," etc. It's news to me, but I hate those shruggy guys. I just run all files through Maconverter 1.1.8 as a matter of course (assuming your hot G5 has Classic still available). Good luck, and please send some of that Australian summer up here to Massatoosetts! love from texboy

Hehe texboy, might be too hot for you here. well that martinc software doesn't work on my puters anymore even though classic still runs other classic aps okay. I've been eyeing off the G5 quad. If someone tells me poser runs faster with it I would be really interested. Love esther

(Don't mind the WebObjects redirect, this will get you there.)

PoserMacConvLite for OS X will convert RSR to PNG.

The quad will be very nice for video editing with the next version of Final Cut Pro. But Poser still only runs on a single processor. Someone needs to give e-Frontier a kick and tell them to make Poser multi-processor capable.

I tried a quad yesterday at the local mac store (burlingame) and it froze up trying to liquify a 42X30 inch noise image in photoshop elements. haven't the foggiest if any existing app can access all 4 processors, as many can't even access two.

Fringewood ( ) posted Sat, 07 January 2006 at 2:50 PM

The coming Final Cut Pro is reportedly designed to access all four processors to speed up video processing, which is 98% number crunching. Other than that, I haven't heard of anything mentioned in ADC circles that will be using them all, yet.
