OK,..........we found a place to move,...........still in Winchester VA,...........about 3 miles from where we are now. Only trouble is ther is no hi-speed internet access ! None ! Zip, zilch, nada, nothing, bupkis. No DSL or cable access,.....unbelievable. Anyone have any knowledge of satellite internet access,.....performance wise. That's all that's available. Thanks for your attention.

All you need is a 3 mile cable and hey presto!!

I know just three things about Satellite internet access:

1 - You need a dish.
2 - You need a reciever.
3 - You need a decent sized wallet :-)

It's quite expensive as far as I'm aware. But just incase you're looking for the hardware, you should consider those Hauppauge digital TV reciever cards, then you get two products in one, a SatelliteTV/PVR and a way to recieve "high-speed" internet through a dish. If you go that route, be sure to check compatibility with your ISP first, 'cos I think there are only a limited amount of ISP's that support it.

You can acces the web via satellite, but your only allowed to browse it as you need a sattelite emitter to send datas ( mail images etc...) sorry!

I'm new to the board (been lurking a while), but I thought I'd throw my 2 cents in since I'm in the same situation. We bought a house about a year and a half ago with no access to dsl or cable so we went with satellite (Direcway).

Cons - 1) it is expensive (about twice what we were paying for cable not including buying the equipment); 2) you will notice somewhat of a lag compared to the speeds you're used to with other broadband, but still much faster than dial-up; 3) not very compatible with most VPN (or so my IT dept here at work tells me)

Pros - 1) Hey, at least ya got some kind of high-speed :-D 2) Service, so far, has been impeccable. There was only one time in over a year when service was not available due to satellite problems. Compared to the almost weekly issues I had with Roadrunner, it's a nice change. (your mileage may vary of course).

Oh, by the way, if you do go with satellite, I would recommend upgrading to the small business plan, or whatever they call it, if you have more than one computer.

I started out with the home version for more than one user, but we were still having problems with pages timing out if both of us were on. Once we upgraded that problem went away. More $$$ of course, but they know they got ya :(

Actually, pidjy, that's not quite true. Most of the satellite services I've looked at connect using dialup for uploads. Otherwise, one couldn't interact with a service like Renderosity.

I use Direcway With the lastest dw7000 modem.No phone line needed. (guess on my part for your location)Must have an open view to south southwest at about 40 degrees up off the horizon veries with location. Go with the proplan for It's 69.00 a month for me. My only other choice is dial up and this is so much faster I can't willingly go back to dial up. The initial cost was 650.00 for equpment and installation. It can be unusable in vry heavy rain. On performence It varies widely. from 1500kbs down to 0kbs Typical download speed on my plan seems to be around 120 kbs partly due to the website being dowloaded from. At toastnet there is a speed test I get about 1200kbs on normally. Hope that helps.Direcway has been helpful when I've called them. There are also people that use these with an rv.

Come to think of it, I do know someone with satellite that doesn't need a phone line. My basic point is this: the internet is a two way system. Servers don't send out data unless it is requested, therefore satellite must have a system in place for sending user requests.
