Legacy File Writer is a Python script for Poser 5 and Poser 6 that will take nearly any existing Poser library file (more appropriately Figures (cr2), Props (pp2), and Hair (hr2) ) and write a Legacy file version (Poser ProPack and Poser 4).

This is for folks who like many of the features of Poser 5 or 6 but would rather have files that are more backwards compatible. It can also be a very useful merchant resource. This script accomplishes the following:

  • It will write a new library file with "-P4PP" at the end of the filename so your original stays intact.
  • Removes ControlProp declaration completely, including heirarchy lines.
  • Removes Dial Groups information.
  • Removes ShaderTree information.
  • Removes other P5/P6 specific information like backface culling, shading rate, polygon smoothing and so on.
  • Writes version number as 4.01
  • Coverts absolute to relative paths in texture and object declarations
  • removes the mostly useless "Preview" material.
  • Attempts to remember the last directory used as personally, that annoys me to no end in Poser. :)

Limitations:

In order to create proper legacy files, it is up to you to set appropriate program settings, such as turning off file compression and external binary morphs in Miscellaneous preferences. It is doubtful that the script will work with such things and it remains untested.

The script also writes a configuration file (to Runtime:Python:poserScripts), which saves the last directory used so hopefully you won't have to fight with that annoyance frequently. However, some file operations in Poser, like adding things "on the fly" to the python library may set the last directory to your scripts directory. I haven't completely worked that out yet.

Thank you.

Actually, it'd be nice to be able to togel on and off what you'd like the file to be saved at does. Having something rewrite the obj and texture correct paths, and just change version to 4.01, and then resave as the P5/6 version would be nice. (Can't recall how many hours I've spent double checking and redoing things like that.)

That would be nice :) Feel free to alter the script if you'd like to.

Actually, I was going to edit this, but my "time limit" was up - er, um okie dokie. so I'll just add: Actually, there are few sections that could easily just be commented out. I pretty much annotated everything. I could write, or cut down a version to save a P5 file with the "corrections".

This will be good for people still(prefer) using ProPack to get rid of the "newer version of Poser" error messages pop-ups. Thanks...very nice of you. SWAMP (Chuck)

Absolutely Wonderful!!!!

Netherworks ( ) posted Mon, 23 January 2006 at 11:23 PM

Almost done :) Poser File Re-Writer coming. Gives you checkbox options for everything that the Legacy File Writer does. So you can just remove the control prop, or just the shader trees, or the control prop and the Preview material, and and and... ;)
