Subject: Nikon 10.2 MP D200 DSLR
That is a good camera.Been compared here to a D2X without the huge price. I am 21st on the list to get one at the camera shop here and the price is more because of the CND dollar being lower than US. It should arrive in my hands around Feb or March. I can't wait.But more I can't wait for the lens I am getting with it. I might be nuts, but it sure is fun.

Huge congratulations Doug. Ive been wanting that cam since i heard about it. I was set on getting the Canon 20D but now i think i rather have this one. All the tests ive read about it, say its an awesome camera. But here its $2200 and with what has happened to me....i couldnt even afford a disposable cam right now. And i cant even focus my eyes anymore so i guess i have no use for a DSLR either, lol. #:oP I know i know...rest is the key. Sorry Doug, just wanted to congratulate ya. #:O)
How come we say 'It's colder than hell outside' when
isn't it realistically always colder than hell since hell is

Just about all my Nikon-using friends are saving up to buy a D200 - there are also delivery problems here so people have to wait - the 70-200 VR f2.8 also has an excellent reputation - congrats to you and looking forward to seein the pikkies (ps: are you also getting the x1.4 converter and x 2 doubler?) C.

Certainly a camera I aspire to. Capture One supports it software RAW wise, so does Adobe bridge from what I understand most people would use one of these two options in preference to the supplied software or Rawshooter anyways.

Yeah thats how I see and heard it raved about too Kort.Thanks I was in the Nikon Depot, and there was a guy in there going on about that D200, and actually was doing some testing on them.Independant of Nikon too.When he told me how much he liked it, and how good the colour was and the speed, along with comparisons to pro cameras, I just had to order it.I like the fact the body is sealed and it is made of alloy. I was going to hold off and be the conservative type I should be, but......we live but once. Jim that lens is $2000 CND asking price, but have seen it online for just around $1900,I have 3 months for price matching.I don't like going around from place to place trying to save 10 bucks, because my time is worth more, but if it is 100 then it is worth looking into. I'm not prepared to go out and buy D2X and the 600 zoom I would like to have, so this is going to be satisfactory for me.It's a hobby.

Oh Charles...the converter will have to wait. I still need to get more input on converters. Are they really usable and worht the money. There has to be something that goes haywire using them. I mean for the price dif...why wouldnt they just make the lens do the same thing, rather than have to take out a mortgage to buy a lens that would give you the same length in the first place.

I am fortunate in having a D200 sitting right beside me, it was delivered prior to Christmas but the weather in the UK has been awful so I have been learning the camera and doing just test shots. Thanks Art....those are the type of images I take. I mean I won't say I see a huge huge dif in what I get with a D70, but some of the changes they have done to it I want to have.Your snow ones turned out with good colour, for the grey type of day.Impressive Besides. the less I have to chane lenses, the better I will like it. Thats my excuse.

Doug, sorry for not answering faster but I have been rather busy. I havn't used converters recently but I spoke to a friend who uses them with fixed-length lenses and is v happy with them. They are lighter and cheaper than longer lenses and are much used by travel/nature photographers who have to carry their own gear - lol. the x1.4 converter will nearly give you the equivalent of a 100-300 f4 + add the crop factor of 1.5, you will have a beautifully long lens. With the stabilisation, you should be able to use it without a tripod and give Jim (Nameless_Wildness) some real competition. I just had a look at the Nikon price lists, it sells here for about C$700 - so you might have to start saving again.

Doug, These images are reduced down from 15 Mb Raw files so I would not expect you to see a massive improvement in quality at this size. At the time of posting them Adobe had not upgraded their camera raw converter to open the D200 raw files so these had to be converted via Nikon Capture before opening in CS2 not an ideal way but the only work around at the time. Very minor levels adjustment has been added to the images to get to this result. The camera fits very comfortably in the hand, I have added the vertical grip ( MB 200 ? ), with my most used lens, a 17 - 35 2.8 the combination is extremely well balanced for hand held shots even with the weather we have been experiencing. I think if you have experience with other Nikon DSLR cameras you will find no trouble adapting to the D200, I have been using the D100 ( my wife now has this camera ) and the D200 is just a logical upgrade specification wise, the controls are in similar positions, the menu's are similar and the preview screen is now a really usable feature for image assesment. That dull lifeless weather has been fairly typical of what we have experienced in this part of the UK of late but the trip out in the snow was out of desparation, I had owned the camera for several weeks, worked through the manual, decided on the settings I intended to start with, I needed to get out and take some images, the snow was an unexpected bonus, it was not or did not look like snowing when I left home !
Hey Art. Least it is good to know there may be someone around to answer my questions on it later.I thought the images were real choice you did. I also found Nikon a lot more comfortable in my hands, and controls more ergonomic, which is why I chose a D70 in the first place. So the D200 will feel right at home. Have yet to download Nikon Capture, though the rep for Nikon said I should give it a try. I use the Nikon editor in Nikon View,but mostly for converting the whole batch to jpg. I still have not found a way Photoshop will let you convert the whole folder to a different size and RAW to jpg. Seems I have to do one at a time. Be nice if you started posting more in the gallery so I can see your progress with the camera. Yep Charles.. I did consider a converter. I think here I can get it for around 600. I'll wait a bit on that though.
