I've been playing around a bit with greeble, and came up with this. I'm pretty happy with it, but I know it can be much, much better... the two empty holes are a reflection of this. I just didn't want to fill those until I got some help. Any suggestions?

Love the capabilities of that (3DSMax) plugin. Looks cool, imo. AS

Looks nice Robert;) Did you model it in Bryce or Max?:~ Maybe some horizontal vents could fill in the middle one and more of the same on the right as you have done with the left;) -Michael

The greeble plugin works in 3DSMax, it kinda auto fills in defined spaces with complex looking geometry. Brilliant plugin. AS

@AS Can you get that sort of plug for C4D? -Michael

AgentSmith ( ) posted Sun, 29 January 2006 at 5:18 AM

C4D;

Here is a C4D tutorial on making quasi-greeble meshes, along with a free plugin;
http://forum.3dfluff.com/showthread.php?threadid=82

Here is a plugin for C4D, called "structure", that is supposed to be a greeble-like plugin. I think you have to buy it;

@shinyary2... "I'm pretty happy with it, but I know it can be much, much better".................... OK, If you know it can be better.....how?? If you feel this is right, why dont you try to imagine what will make it look better?? (I've often thought this about my work.....and every one could be much much better but, where do you stop!) What was your thoughts before you started this work and how did you see this image in your mind being finished/look like? (If its anything like mine....its never finished!!) Did you have a plan of the finished object and what has made you ask for more help for the other two sections if you havent finished it yet?? Sorry for these questions but its my new year trend to ask myself this before i upload another picture and then i ask, how could it be changed, and then make another section/greeble/object with the new ideas.....then you have 2 models for the price of one...so to speak! ;) I cant see anything wrong with what you have at the moment...just go with your flow and I'm sure it will be as good as the first greeble..........have faith in yourself ;) Marc

if the structures inside are discrete, I suppose that you could duplicate it, and flip it upside down, rearrange individual pieces, etc..it works for me..;)

file_322367.jpg

lol@AS-- Guess I should feel flattered... this isn't a plugin, it's 100% mine, modelled in Wings3D and rendered in Bryce5. Sans2012-- Great idea with the vents and grates. Heh, I've already got a pretty efficient cooling system I think; if I add some vents, I should probably remove some fans. I think that seven fans + vents is probably a bit excessive. =) Thanks. marcfx-- Mostly I was just experimenting with general greeble. I wanted to develop some techniques, and basically just practice making cool technological thingies. So, I didn't really have anything specific in mind. I hear you about wondering where the heck you stop, though... I've had a major problem with adding too much junk and simply making it look noisy. I want it to look clean, just complex. I've got a very general idea for some sort of futuristic lab to make sometime, but right now I just want to make greeble and practice with that during my rare moments of free time. Thanks for the help and encouragement, guys! =)

@shinyary2 "rare moments of free time"......... Free time!!! That is what made my say those words......thought this was one of your great creations not......free time :) Well, thats a different story. LOL. Have a look at Rochr's topic (link attached). I have been watching this very closely and looking deep into his work...you will find ideas there for sure. You seem to have found a gem in modeling these greebles and i feel this will lead to another offshoot to freebies....oopps, meant Marketplace :) Great stuff so far, keep having some time off, it works! :))))

You can something similar in Cinema with CityGen. And has anybody seen my previous reply? Not that it was anything brilliant, but it disappeared.

Sans2012 ( ) posted Sun, 29 January 2006 at 1:24 PM

LOL Robert! Wow! Technical, hey? I thought the vents could be used to suck fresh air inn, while the fans suck the hot air out. Sort of like a computer case;) What is it anyways? Cheers -Michael;)

With vents =) marcfx-- LOL, yes, that's about what I'm going for. For that matter, that's about what anyone who's making something futuristic is going for =) (well, something on that level at least, if not that specific look). Simply sweet! Can't wait to check out how he decides to texture it (one of my biggest problems is texturing--I'm really bad at it, especially if there's a lot of detail in the polygons... that noise we talked about earlier... yeah...) Thanks very much for the encouragement. =) Sans2012-- Sounds good to me. I have no clue what this is; maybe some sort of futuristic cooling system for a gigantic computer (since you mention it)? Or maybe a really cool looking air conditioner (oh, moisture evaporators!)? draculaz-- Hmm... a bit different than what I'm looking at here (those are meant to be viewed far away, this is more closeup), but still interesting and useful. I've also been working off and on (yay, free time...) on a city building kit to provide a background for my latest ship, the windows and shapes of the structures here are a bit inspiring for that. Thanks!

marcfx ( ) posted Sun, 29 January 2006 at 3:21 PM

Just number all the parts, then texturing becomes a little easier :)

Excellent job Robert, like the way you put a twist on those vents; very creative and interesting;) Well it looks like the fronts done; is it going to be inset on a wall or something or are you going to make some kind of surrounding for it? -Michael:)

pauljs75 ( ) posted Mon, 30 January 2006 at 12:01 AM

If you could come up with 20 of those, place it in a scene with the right lighting, textures, and ambience... You could be the next Rochr. Of course your computer might hate you for it.

"still not entirely sure what the textures will look like, but the modeling portion I like. Any further suggestions?" Nice modelling indeed! Which is why my next suggestion would be to take some pretty clean textures and let the greebles do the talking ;-)

I guess the textures will depend on the environment you create Robert; rust, clean metal Any ideas on a scene for this model?

And here's a great little commentary about greebling, also do a search on 'Nurnies' as there is a strong link, in some studios Nurnies and Greebles are the same in others nurnies are on physical models and greebles on CG, it seems to depend on who you speak to!

Rochr ( ) posted Mon, 30 January 2006 at 4:04 PM

Great job here shinyary2! Complex, yet not overdone. I would try to smoothen up the edges of the round center piece and the opening around it, mainly beacuse that particular area draws attention to it, but other than that minor detail, a job well done! :)
