A special thanks to deadhead over at Vue forum who has managed to help in the OGLE mystery for 3D models from Google Earth. ==================================================== so just a few my experiences: 1., How to install is not problem, instructions at: http://ogle.eyebeamresearch.org/readme are OK, problem is it doesnt work for many users (Google wont start). Probably because of complicated settings in config files. Fortunatley, some good soul posted his config file in forum at http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=533374 and it worked for me. I hope its still there: http://rapidshare.de/files/12465613/Google_Earth.zip.html. There are 2 files, which have to be copied into Google Earth directory. 2., Start Google Earth, below main window uncheck everything except buildings and terrain. Then find some nice place with buildings, zoom it as you like and press ctrl+shift+a. It is combination chosen by author of config file, it can be changed. 3., After that you should have in Google directory file ogle.obj. It is 3D model of your Google screen. In directory called Frame_something are png images that should be texture maps for model (as I read somewhere) but I didnt tested it. 4., I imported model into Cinema 4D for small corrections. Be aware, model is very small so it needs to be dramatically resized. I dont know how it works in other 3D applications, but in Cinema4D I have a lot of strange connections between points and polygons, so I use Optimize function for every part of model. Of course you can delete unwanted parts. Then is model ready for use in any program that accepts obj. files. P.S. Just now tested: I thought that only buildings can be exported, but on Grand canyon it works too, unfortunately mesh is in very low resolution. Looking forward to your creations and excuse my english :) ============================================= A big thankyou DeadHead for your time and trouble.....and your English is good :) Marc :)

tried it, just creates the 0024_whatever folder. no .obj :/ drac (with the rapidshare files) ((without it won't start))

Your lucky, I cant even find the folder it stores these obj files......What did you have to change when you installed GLIntercept0_5 ? I've managed to get Google-earth working after it stalled a few tries but still think I'm doing something wrong :( Marc Rapid share files are going to take a lot of time to download, 75 mins waiting and then it stops :(

This may be part of why it doesn't work. In google earth, there is a checkbox window at the bottom left side. Find the checkbox labeled "3D Buildings" and check it. Then click on the little arrow beside it to open up a list of cities that have the 3d buildings mapped. This doesn't fix it, but it may be needed for it to work. :

remember folks you CAN NOT use those models in a commercial project. You will need the creators Permissions.

I'm not looking to use them commercially. I just want to put them on terrains made from DEMs

Here are some things I probably missed:

1., For me it works only when I have both OpenGL libraries in Google directory:

  • first is "opengl32.orig.dll", this is renamed original file from Windows/system32 directory,
  • second is OpenGL32.dll (888 KB) - that is file copied from GLIntercept directory. If theres one of them missing, Google does nothing.

2., Also note that sometimes you need press ctrl+shift+a several times, because it doesnt react always.

3., Make sure that your Google installation runs in OpenGL mode and not in DirectX ;)

If this doesnt help, then I really dont know. Only watch official forum.
