Just to clarify- this is NOT the old series (which ran from 1963 to 1989). This is the new series, which ran on the BBC in 2005. I forgot to post this link earlier... the official BBC site. Be warned: since the episodes originally aired about a year ago, there may be some spoilers. :) --John

And even despite the 'rubber suits' in the Tom Baker years, I'd hardly call his acting atrocious or the scripts uninteresting. For a typical scifi 'cliff-hanger' (which always get dumped on for some reason - and quickly dumped it seems), it is one that has been around for over forty years. How many series in all can claim such a long run!
Admittedly, sometimes I watch the older series for the hokiness, sometimes for the story, sometimes for the fantasy. From time to time, personally, an episodic set has been better than most other scifi series out there.
You want hilarious, just watch "Knight Rider". Here they are plodding along with computers that barely compute (1+1) correctly and they have a car that not only has amazing sensors, but is artificially intelligent (when AI was still a far off pipedream - and still is). If one is to get past this, one must accept an implausible premise for the time (early 1980's) as well as Hasselhoff's horrific acting! ;)

yeah..saw that probably at the same time..;) Wonder if they still use that cheesy old monophonic synth for the theme song..;) effects have improved, I must admit. Last Dr. Who thing I saw done (this is the US, remember), was some 'made for TV movie' about the year 2000..;)

Ah, that. After rewatching it, there is some merit to it, but the format and follow of the story is odd for Dr. Who. Thus, the beginning is a mess, but near the end, it improves (slightly). ;) The theme and effects had improved significantly by Colin Baker's time.

i loved it! i thought the gass mask episode was particularly clever. and did everyone realize lady cassandra was a take off of michael jackson? love esther
I aim to update it about once a month. Oh, and it's free!
The older theme tune was much better than the newer one, it was only the newer dr who that I was talking about earlier some of the jon pertwee and tom baker ones were very good. The newest doctor (after chris eccleston)is not very good, maybe someday they will get someone who is right for the part again?
estherau, shhhhh. Some of us haven't seen any of these yet. :)

The 2005 (and currently in-production) Doctor Who completely overwhelmed the other channels in the ratings. It was sort of fun to see the commercial channel struggling to find something people would want to watch. The thing is that Doctor Who has been a part of British life since 1963, and lets not forget the Daleks. And it's still rather British. So there were a lot of people who remembered it, and wanted to see what the new version was like, and they stuck around to watch the rest. They were the people who ran around the schools, stiff-armed, shouting "Exterminate", in 1963, and their kids, grandkids even, were suddenly doing the same. And, very unusually, the BBC announced that they would be producing at least another two seasons, not just 2006 but 2007. Some people have speculated that the American TV networks were scared off by the nudity, the politics, the sexual ambiguity of some of the regular characters, and the inter-racial relationships. Personally, I think the idea of a TV series leaving the Prime Minister dead in a broom cupboard is a refreshing change. Does Dick Cheney fart a lot?
Judging the new series of Doctor Who on what the classic series was like is the same as judging the new Battlestar Galactica with the original. Some people prefer one over the other, some judge each on it's own merits (I like them all). Remember the tv movie was co-produced with an American tv network with American audiences in mind but for the most part it sank like a lead balloon in the States but did pretty well this side of the pond. People who like Doctor Who like it because of its Britishness. It makes it different from all of the other sci-fi shows. And to BAR-CODE, remember; in the seventies when we were dressing men up in rubber suits; Battlestar Galactica was dressing monkeys up as robot dogs!

psst - the one with the cricket bat was before colin baker right now, we're on Dr 10. (1: Willam Hartnell, 2:Patrick Troughton, 3:Jon Pertwee, 4:Tom Baker, 5:Peter Davidson, 6:Colin Baker, 7: Slyvester McCoy, 8:Paul McGann, 9:Christopher Eccleston and 10:David Tennant) as to remaining Regens.. who knows? things are kinda changed... can't say - it's a spoiler
see..you don't pay attention to a series for 20 years, and you start misplacing things..comes from old age..;) Well, the one that came after the one with the long scarf..;) Tom Baker was the one I was thinking of..too many Bakers spoils the continuity..;)

*right now, we're on Dr 10.*Don't forget that #13 is the Valeyard from "Trial of a Time Lord". If you haven't seen the episode, I apologize for the spoiler... but that episode was during the Colin Baker era and originally aired about 20 years ago! Some people have speculated that the American TV networks were scared off by the nudity, the politics, the sexual ambiguity of some of the regular characters, and the inter-racial relationships I don't think the American networks were scared off by any of these factors. I believe that the networks won't carry Doctor Who because it's nothing like "Friends" or "Joey" or "Everybody Loves Raymond"... or even "Law & Order" or "ER". Networks want "bankable" series, like the millionth "Law & Order" or "Survivor" spin-off. If we wait long enough, I'm sure NBC will try to make their own version, like they did with "Coupling" and "The Office". Anyway, the new series is very British: many of the episodes are set in Cardiff (which is south of London). And when aliens invade the Earth, they start in London instead of Washington DC. ;) --John

You mean Cardiff isn't south of London? I think I need to smack one of my friends who told me it was! I apologize in advanced to any Welsh members... and I hope that all future Doctor Who episodes are shot in Cardiff and the tourism money doesn't stop flowing. :) --John

While watching Battlestar Galactica last night, I saw ads for the new Doctor Who TV series! This is the new series that ran on the BBC (in England) back in early 2005... and that ran in Canada later last year.
The show will finally be seen in the US!
If you have Flash, you may be able to see an announcement on the Sci-Fi Channel's main page. (I don't have Flash installed, so I didn't see anything.)
Doing a search, results in this:
Events Calendar
The 17th is 3 weeks from now... which is the week following the second part of the BSG 2-part season finale. Hmm... will we see Doctor Who instead of BSG for the next 13 weeks? (14 weeks if Sci-Fi shows "The Christmas Invasion" episode from last December.)
