WTG congrats, Max 8 is almost like a different program compared to Max 3.1, it rocks. I have Maya complete 4.1 and don't get on with it - but these things are personal preference, I've never even tried lightwave.

----------

Toolset: Blender, GIMP, Indigo Render, LuxRender, TopMod, Knotplot, Ivy Gen, Plant Studio.

$7700? Nice gig! Congrats.

"Max 8 is almost like a different program compared to Max 3.1, it rocks"

Well, I think Max's biggest strength since version 6 is it's ParticleFlow system. One of the best particle systems in the biz that I've ever used, outside of some specialized software or Houdini Master. It also has one of the largest user bases, and there's literally tons of free tuts and plugins out there to enhance your experience with it. Not to mention, Max has always been on the cutting edge of rendering technology, particularly GI rendering, with engines like Vray, Brazil, and FinalRender having their start on the Max platform.

Maya is the best for character animation, hands down. However, if you don't know Mel scripting, you don't get the most out of Maya. Mel scripting knowledge is almost a prerequisite to using the software, which makes it less appealing to "artistic types", but is why it's used so often in big movie studios, who have technical directors to guide the artists.

Lightwave is probably one of the best all-around or general purpose 3D apps. It gives you a huge bang for the buck, and while it may not be as strong as Maya or Max for certain things, it can compete with any software feature for feature. I'd say go with this, unless you have a specialized need for one of the others.

XSI is a great one too, and reasonably priced. However, it's more complex to use than any other I think. Just my humble opinions of course.

I havent made the final choice due to the fact.. Daz and lightwave with MimicPro... Damn it a year ago it was cut and dried who you went for... Ahhhh freak mimic is so fun... sorry unless Rob can sit there and tell us that he has Max included I will go with LW...But if Max is Included even if it is down the road I will BUY...Cheaper for4 me thru the UpgradePrice...Hahhhahhhaaa

foleypro ( ) posted Fri, 03 March 2006 at 5:35 PM

Hmmmm I do love Maya.........Been useing it for 3 years now....Mayyaaa as Homer says.........Hmmmmmm wait on Rob...for Mimic compatibility.... I wish.....

foleypro ( ) posted Fri, 03 March 2006 at 5:47 PM

Lightwave I have been told...Yup

InfernalDarkness ( ) posted Fri, 03 March 2006 at 5:52 PM

So you didn't actually get any money up front? Bang-for-the-buck, $7,700 would barely cover the cost of Maya, and Lightwave is far, far cheaper. So what happens to the rest of your profit?

foleypro ( ) posted Fri, 03 March 2006 at 5:59 PM

Exactually...I am told they would rather have me get Lightwave... But If I can sell the opening scene in a one application rep...Then I might be able to sell them another Package that will get me a Full Blown maya because they have seen the Promo's. I want Maya more then anything...It is the Package for the future even tho Kinetics owns it...Maya's Engineers are more 3D adventurous...Means more compitionion between their co's...

foleypro ( ) posted Fri, 03 March 2006 at 6:01 PM

Profit... Haaahahhahahahha thats in a percentage thing...Or so I am told.... Thats what I had to sign a NDA and they stated...Yadda yadda yadda.. Buty I get the Program with a license...Thats a Legit thing...Money down the road...

foleypro ( ) posted Fri, 03 March 2006 at 6:11 PM · edited Fri, 03 March 2006 at 6:13 PM

Vegas Studio is a great one. It handles just about any audio and video format and can import acid loops for background ambience. Real easy for aligning dialog to video or animation.

WTG Foleypro, congratulations! I have Mimic 1.0 (Lipsinc), Lightwave has it now? Is it even the same progy? Cool little program but Im sure its changed over the years and especially if Lightwave owns it. Best of luck!

lol dont let your exitement tempt you to get in trouble with your NDA! Being able to stick to an NDA even if your enthausiasm wants to shout all the details to the world is part of being a pro ;-)

If I got that kind of money for programs, I'd go with Maya Complete and Photoshop CS2. And then invested in Gnomon DVDs for Maya, too. Forget Lightwave. :-P

Well done foleypro...now since you are such a nice guy and rich you could buy me a small program like hmmm paintshop pro ;)

I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.

One of the problems with success is that you give up bragging rights - at least for a while. (not that I's know anything about that) Anyrate congratulations!!!! cool!!! I wasn't here - I didn't see this. 8:)) - TJ
