Hey everyone!!! This week i brought my cam to work (even though its not allowed....so ssssshhhh) and i was playing around with some of the chemicals we have there. That was kinda exciting since i have no chemistry education or anything, and i wasnt sure which substances i could mix without causing an explosion or something, LOL. Oh well, nobody got injured in this process so i reckon i cant have done too poorly. I work as a lab technician at a chemical plant for those of you that wonder. So anyway, i did take quite a few shots there. And perhaps you could help me out a little and tell me which ones i should trash. First one is just of a little cup...thingie.... (i told ya...i have no education whatsoever...)

How come we say 'It's colder than hell outside' when isn't it realistically always colder than hell since hell is supposed to be fire and brimstone?

Wow! Very cool stuff! I like the color in the first and the focus is interesting, but the second has to be my fav. The color is awsome and that drop you captured is just perfect. I wouldn't trash either of them. :)

This ones not that good, but it got sort of a flash tail that i thought looked kinda neat. Thats another thing you need to take into calculation whenever shooting off your camera where i work....most rooms have some kind of flash-alarm that goes off in case of a flash or a sparkle....and ya dont want the firedepartment to come rushing in to find you photographing where youre not allowed. #:o/

And finally this one..... I probably have 20 more shots i could work on, but i really shouldnt push it here. I gather youre quite sick of my drops already, LOL. Although....i still have to have a go at that challenge of yours Richard. #;O)

I like all except the first one, and that's only because it's front-focused. I like the color, though. Be careful mixing unknown chemicals, unless you like taking pictures of explosions. :-)

lol love the colors and shots. now make a gas cloud forming just on top but you can see what going on lol

what you see is not what you know; it in your face

Damia ( ) posted Sat, 11 March 2006 at 12:07 AM

Okay, once more.....that last one has beautiful colors!! Love it!! I don't even have the patience to try this....also, my cam probably wouldn't like it much. I haven't even tried my new light box yet. I am afraid to get crappy pics because I don't have regular lights....I'm going to have to use two reading lights and a flashlight. LOL Anyway, you have done an excellent job here Andreas. I'm glad you shared them. The liquid and colors......excellent. :)

Oh wow those are some awesome shots. Number 6 looks like it has rocket boosters. I'd say number 3 is my fave... gotta love the color.

TwistedMindDesigns ( ) posted Sat, 11 March 2006 at 12:29 AM

Amazing, vibrant and beautiful images... i'm jealous! I need to work more on setup shots!

Even if you choose not to choose, you still have made a choice

Zacko ( ) posted Sat, 11 March 2006 at 12:30 AM

Thanks gang!!! #:o) Oh and Danielle....these are all taken in a normally lit room using the flash. No extra lights or anything. Infact, i even enabled the built-in ND filter as a way to try and minimize the blown highlights. And dont feel bad about the lightbox either....i was ranting like a maniac about getting one....and i got mine 4 weeks ago....still havent tried it, LOL. #:oP

Hang....what you mean you are a lab technician, and have no chemistry background. Yikes.... Oh well if they fire you for taking pics you could always become a pro photographer. I can't pick a fav here...they are all way too good. I do like #3 a lot. The colour on post 17 with that ripple is just wicked. Love that. Sigh ....ok back to ducks. I was getting a few more ready to post. Got a Bernese for a week, so maybe he will provide some action shots.

OOOH!!! Hes staying with you is he? Gotta get him to chase the ducks man!!! #:oD And thank you very much by the way. The photos in 6 and 17 are straight out of the cam. Just cropped them. Regular H2O in a "potatoe-boiling-pot". #:o)

Andreas, you really SHOULD be careful mixing unknown chemicals! I'd also be leery of taking pics like this at work! I would think there are other Technicians/personnel there and they would wonder what you're up to! Also, if there are security cameras, (like many facilities have), you may have been caught on tape! (I certainly hope not!) Anyways the bottles in 1 & 2 are called a "flask" as Doug mentioned. Cool drop shots...hopefully worth the risk you took!

Zacko ( ) posted Sat, 11 March 2006 at 8:27 AM

I think im in the clear Joe, but thanks for your concern. #:o) Oooh...so thats a "flask"...i thought Doug was talking about the potatoe-boiling-pot, LOL.

I like the little silver bug in #6 looks like he just escaped the jaws of that fish.

Each one has something wonderful about it,I can see why you would have difficulty deciding which to go with.So I guess I'll just tell you my favorites.Of them all,I like nos.2,3,8 and 17 best. I particularly like the beaker with the purple fluid in number 2;I think it's cool the way you captured the drop inside of it...and that color is beautiful... The surface of three is fabulous,as is the color. Number 8 is gorgeous.Again, the color is what does it for me...but also I like that kind of drop... And 17 has that wow/cool factor going for it.The repeating circles, that silvery surface and the cool-looking drop of water suspended like that, make it very eye-catching compositionally. Hope this helps.I can't imagine taking so many great ones I couldn't choose. You have become very adept at this!Congrats! And may I add...please be careful. No shot is worth losing your job...or blowing yourself up for goodness sake!-M :^)

Thank you Marlene and Ilona. #:o) Dont worry...im somewhat careful. I only use liquids that doesnt have that toxic- or explosive-label on it. #:oP We actually have stuff there that react with oxygen so if you just forget to put the lid back on it will blow. #:o/

All are very, very nice! Was wondering what shutter speeds are you using? What camera/equipment setup as well... Are those colors from post work? Thanks!

Zacko ( ) posted Sun, 12 March 2006 at 12:39 AM

The colors in 6 and 17 are original. The others were originally a yellow substance of some kind and i later changed the colors of those in Photoshop. Although i also changed the whitebalance in my camera. Camera i used is my Canon Powershot Pro1, a compact with built-in flash. No extra lights or anything, just the flash at a shutterspeed of 3200. I also activated the built-in ND-filter to get less blown highlights.
