Subject: Animated Alpha Channels and poses

Two Questions:
1)Is it possible to animate alpha channels with poser figures?
2)Is there anyone out there that could make say half a dozen different animated poses (around sixty frames each) of V3 and M3 falling flat to the ground as if they had been wounded in battle? Falling forward,backwards sideways etc.I have purchased all sorts of animated poses over the years but they all have faults.ie hands and shoulders deform when poses are applied.

one of the free bvh sites has those poses, but I can't recall which one. and yes, you always gotta fix those things when you load 'em into poser.

To answer question 1): Yes, in Poser 5 and 6 the transparency, transparency edge and transparency falloff are all animatable. Just click on that loop icon in front of the numerical value and you can switch between non-animated and animated. Almost all nodes and node values are animatable. The only exception are the parameters that would require a fundamental changes that do not have "in-between" values, for example you cannot animate the file name of the image in an image node, or the function type in a math node. But any parameter that has a smooth scale can be animated.

svdl,Thanks for your reply.I render my image in Poser and save as a PSD and open in Photoshop.Would you be able to explain in more simple terms your suggestion how I would go about putting together several images for animation as alpha channels? I want to put together a group of DAZ figures that are pre animated to solve memory problems Poser 6 has with large groups of people.I think making animated alpha channels would solve this problem.

If I understand you correctly, you want to make "billboard movies" with transparant movie background. I have some ideas on how to do that. I'm making a test movie right now, I'll let you know when the tests are complete.

It is possible to animate alpha channels! You can use the blender node as alph chanel and not have to get your materials partial transparent.

svdl,That is correct.I want to put together about half a dozen figures pre animated in Poser and render them as an animated alpha channel and then import them into a scene without a background.I have successfully made still alpha channels saved them as PZ3's and imported them into Vue5i.I would like to do the same with animated alpha channels if possible.PS.Many thanks for your interest and patience.Cheers arrow1

Alas, no luck. I made a "normal" movie and an alpha movie, but they didn't work as expected in Poser 6. The alpha part was not 100% transparent. I think it may have to do with floating point rounding errors within Poser. By the way, Vue 5I accepts movies as textures and alphas. The ecosystem fire tutorial makes use of that feature.

But the movies work in Vue 5 Infinite. You don't even need a separate alpha movie. By applying a filter (step 10%) and feeding the filter output into the transparency output, you can have your normal movie double as an alpha. I'm rendering a short AVI right now, when finished I'll post the links to the AVI, the movie, and the scene.

Got to correct that about not needing alpha movies. Didn't work. Here are the Vue test scene, the resulting animation, and the map and alpha AVIs, in one zip file. AVI format is MS MPEG4 V2

svdl,Many thanks.This is the sort of alpha channel animations I would to make.I assume you render the figure in Poser save it as a psd or png then open open it in Photoshop..How do you get it into Vue? Any chance of a simple tutorial? I know how to make a still alpha channels using Poser and Photoshop and save it as a PZ3, but not an animated one.I am still learning Vue5i and have not used alpha channels in this program.Any help would be appreciated.Cheers arrow1

I rendered both AnetaMap2.avi and AnetaMask.avi in Poser itself. I assume you know how to render an animation in Poser. The mask animation was tricked. I set the document view to Outline and the background color to pure black. I made the ground and the lights invisible. Then I rendered to AVI in preview mode, antialias and motion blur on. I can't send you the .pz3s used to make the animations since they contain copyrighted content.

Could I be a pain and ask you this? I have at present an animated PZ3 in my Poser interface 48 frames.I render the animation in image output mode for the map with a white background.For the mask do I do another render run in preview mode set to image output mode or avi? I make the document view set to outline and background display black.Making all my lights and shadow lights invisible.Switchng the ground plane off.

I'm not sure. AVIs are compressed, so two AVIs will take up much less space than two image sequences. On the other hand, a single image will take up less memory than a full AVI. So it all depends on how Vue handles image sequences. If all images are kept in memory, AVI is clearly the better choice. But if the images are only loaded when the actual frame is being rendered (meaning one map and one alpha per frame) it's better to use image sequences.

I worked it out as far as the file output.One last question.I cannot seem to get my figure mask pure white.I set the background to black and the document display to outline and it renders just that an outline not a pure white figure on a black background.

I went into the material room and set all materials to white.It seemed to do the same job.Is this correct?

For some reason I have been successfull in making an animated alpha channel to work in Poser but I cannot get it to work in Vue.I have saved both the mask and rendered sequence as an avi on a one sided square,then as a pz3.I import it into Vue and I can get a still image but not an animated one.Any suggestions? Instead of importing the .pz3 you should make use of the alpha planes of Vue 5 itself. The alpha planes accept image sequences or AVIs for both the normal image and the alpha mask. No need to import the .pz3!

Thanks svdl once again!
I have loaded an alpha plane in Vue and tried to load the image in the map area and the transparency in the trans area.All I get is a still image not an animated one.Also Vue5i has crashed several time when I have tried this.I have consulted the manual but I am hopeless at trying to decipher modern computer 3d speak.I am a visual person and once show something I seldom forget.I don't suppose you or somebody would have the time to show me step by how to put the an avi map and trans onto an alpha plane in Vue.

Well, here's a try. Create a new alpha plane in Vue. A dialog pops up asking you to enter a texture and an alpha. Load the texture movie (AVI works) into the texture square (use that little arrow, second icon on the left just below the texture square). Load the matching alpha movie into the alpha square. Vue handles alpha masks differently from Poser: white is transparent, black is solid. Use the little icon on the upper right of the transmap square to invert the transmap movie. That's all! Note: I'm using Vue 5 Infinite. Don't know if this will work in other versions of Vue.

The popup box has only appeared once when I loaded my alpha plane. and it didn't load any images.Does it take a while to load the avi's? I closed Vue down and reopened and loaded another alpha plane and the popup box didn't appear.Is there a setting that has to be ticked?

It's not a problem. You can just select the alpha plane, go to the material editor, right click the texture map and Edit Function. Select the icon with the (probably white) globe in the function editor connected to the Diffuse output, use the little arrow to load a map, and pick your AVI. The same with the other globe, connected to transparency. That's all.

I was loading the wrong plane.I now get the option box all the time however, even after loading into the alpha plane option all the boxes including the preview are black.Do the the avi's take a while to load?

This is the correct type of plane. You loaded the AVIs using the little arrows on the lower left corners of the Color picture and the Alpha picture panels? You inverted the alpha movie using the little icon at the upper right corner of the Alpha picture panel? That's the first part. Now you HAVE to set up an animation in Vue and mark the alpha plane as an animated object (third tab on the upper pane on the extreme right of your screen). Else you only see the first frame of the movie. Scrub the timeline to frame 20 or so and render a preview. It should work! By the way, did the scene in the ZIP work for you? It's made using Vue 5 Infinite update 5.09 (don't know the build number off the top of my head).

Yes,Your avi's and mine all play ok.I have managed to get one of my avi's I made in Poser with a mask onto a Vue alpha.I can render an animation but it appears as a bill board not a see through background.I think I will give it a rest for tonight and try again tomorrow.Many thanks for your patience.Cheers arrow1
