Subject: another dynamic cloth question...

does, say, a dynamic cap have to be parented to the hip? Every time I parent the cape to the hip and simulate, it drapes but down around the figure's waist...

I've never worked with a dynamic cape, so I'm not sure. But if it's falling down, maybe the cloth is too "heavy". You can find cloth parameters at the following links: http://www.poserfashion.net/cloth_parameters.htm http://www.runtimedna.com/mod/forum/messages.php?ShowMessage=122961 Also, had run into a problem where the dress I was using was falling off during the simulation. I got some good tips. The link is above. Maybe something in there will help you.

If it is a cape that just attaches at the back of the neck then you need to make a constrained group and select a few vertices at the neck area to stop the cape from falling.

I'm not convinced that dynamic clothing needs to be parented at all, provided you start your simulation from the zeroed pose. I never do it - but if I did, I'd say the neck would be the logical place to parent a cape. However, don't be misled into thinking that parenting will stop your cape falling down when you simulate, because it won't. For that, you need to constrain the part which attaches, as xantor said. Exactly what you need to do will depend on the design of the cape, i.e. whether it has fastenings or not.

Parenting is one of those weird bits of folklore, like the idea that you can't make dynamic cloth out of things with internal surfaces (hence the clothes you can see through in the places where the insides of backfacing polys are visible). Parenting actually interferes with using Scale to fit dynamic clothes (parented objects inherit scale, so you're wasting your time), and I've used dynamics to make flesh soft. So, is it true that daddy longlegs are deadly poisonous, but fortunately their stingers are too small to get us? M

I parent dynamic capes (and ponchos and similar upper-body items) to the chest. I only parent dynamic clothing to hip or chest, depending upon what seems more appropriate per general body movement. This has worked very well for me.

I read somewhere that the parenting does`nt affect the cloth simulation, the parenting is to keep the clothing attached to the figure.

I never parent dynamic cloth any more. For I'd make a samll area at the neck of the cape into either a constrained or choreographed group to keep it in place. That or make the cape into a hybrid with a conforming neck group and a dynamic group for the rest of the cloth. mike
