i may be misinformed, but isn't the window weekly for those artists who are either new or less-than hot 20 material? all i see is essentially a mirror image of the hot 20, or perhaps a hot 21-40. what is it for anyway?

The Hot20 has been a subject of discussion for a very long time. Many people see it as predominantly a popularity contest. I think if you watch closely, you'll see that there are many, many Hot20 images that don't make the FWW. I think the Fractal Weekly Window is intended to highlight images that are excellent examples of fractals, or are particularly beautiful or particularly unique. They are chosen by the moderator of our gallery and thus the issue of popularity is eliminated.

The Hot20 changes every day, and there is no Hot20 archive. The FWW is an archive of excellent images that anyone can view anytime to see what fractals are and what possiblities exist.

unique images? half of them are simple iteration fractals and spirals with cool coloring effects from photoshop! admittedly, there are some, like psion, encrypted and others that i've seen that are very unique, but i dunno...

I don't think they're only 'simple spiral' with a few PS filters. Of course, some images i thought they should go (or not go) in the FWW don't go (or go), but each of us think in a different way, so it is normal.

Personally i admit that here in renderosity users prefer 'artistical' images (with multilayer, filters, effects, composition, ecc) than 'mathematic' ones, more simple but which shows the true beauty of a virtual mathematic world. I prefer 'mathematic' images, but there are very few users that think like me. So it's normal that FWW shows such images, with VERY COOL coloring effects from photoshops.
I'm not able to do such images, but i think is a lot of work to do them, even if the 'mathematical layer' is not so interesting like the artistic one.

Hey Kid - I resent your implication that people just use Photoshop to get colouring effects - some of us know how to use the fractal programme to achieve what we want and sometimes it takes a damn long time!! So don't just belittle everyone with a sweeping statement that has no foundation - And to be really pedantic everyone's fractals are unique - they may be similar to each other but they are not exactly the same - therefore they are unique. By the way, I use Photoshop to make my monogram signature not to 'doctor' my fractals but even if I did, there is a skill involved in postwork so don't just write it off.

I said the fractals in the FWW were excellent examples of fractals, OR are particularly beautiful OR particularly unique, not that they were necessarily all of the above (although some of them may be). But The FWW is an archive available for anyone to see the variety of fractals, the variety of artistic expression shown by each different fractal, and the evolution of fractal art. Lots of people seem to think fractals aren't art because the computer does it. If the computer did it, why are there so many different styles of fractal art? And they are all archived in the FWW. Our proof, if you will. Many different fractal generators are featured there. Many different artists. I went through and randomly grabbed some of the examples below. No, I didn't spend all morning searching them out. I didn't have to. Great examples are in every FWW. (Although I must admit that I did end up spending a great deal of time exploring the galleries of some of the fractal artists highlighted there. But then, obsession with fractals is one of the universal traits of a fractal artist!) I also suspect, although I didn't say it earlier, that there are some fractals that are included in the FWW partly because they are beautiful fractals that weren't as "noticed" as they should have been. And sometimes I think Barb and Viv (or Nick) do try to include artists that may not have been featured there before. But when they do so, the images they select are nevertheless worthy of being there! I applaud them for that! Below are the examples I'm talking about. I have no way of knowing if any of them were featured in the Hot20, since the Hot20 isn't archived. But I remember some, if not most, of them weren't, because at the time of their posting I noticed they were not in the Hot20 and in my opinion, should have been. I want to say one more thing and then I'm done. When I was lost in my own private fractal world, enjoying so many of the images in the FWW, I noticed that there are really quite a few that have been deleted from the fractal artist's gallery, leaving an empty space in the FWW. I was really disappointed. Sometimes I delete images from my gallery, too, but I'm going to try not to delete anything that is in the FWW. I can always check the upload date on my images, and then check the FWW for that week (or the Fractal Vintage Showcase for that matter) and NOT delete the image if it appears in the FWW or FVS. I really hope everyone will do that. I think these archives are more than just interesting and beautiful. They are there for everyone, including schools, to see the variety and beauty of our art. Yes, I would be totally honored if any of my fractals made it to the weekly window instead of the 'Hot' 20. I know that most people think that is a joke anyway. I just hope I learn enough and become accomplished enough to get one in the weekly window. It seems to be much more 'choosy.' I like that. Everyone I see in it is unique. So I just keep plowing(actually playing) away! I seldom use PSP for my colors in UF, and if I use an effect/filter/plugin to accomplish a certain look or color, it is always written underneath the image. Maybe you just need more gradients to accomplish more colors in your creations. I use some I made in PSP, some I made in Apophysis, and I make up new ones all the time in UF. The colors can make or break a good fractal.
