Well, he is almost done. Darth Maul is a composite mesh built from several different sources. Outerskirt mesh by Chris Lowe from his 3ds mesh on the SWMA. Other clothing came from Alan R, and AofD's Duncan McCloud mesh. I believe the double saber is from Verminaard submitted to the SWMA. The horns were done by me, the vest came with Poser 4, the shirt/coat was modified from the poseable jacket, and the wonderful glove morphs are by Traveler. Textures by me and some composite from Chris Lowe. He is fully poseable, the saber's transparency is fully native Poser 4 effect, and as soon as I work out a few little bugs, and optimize the morphs, I will post it to funstuff. Should be in a day or two. Comments and suggestions are welcome, and I think in order, you guys have NO idea how long I spent working the tattoos on his face because Poser really likes to take a single pixel and stretch it across the whole side of the face. I think I put about 12 hours into getting it as believable as possible. I plan some serious animation when he is done. I would be interested to see what others come up with as well Communion

Absolutely stunning! The lightsaber makes me drool. I am humbled by your skill.

Sure-everyone loves Maul... What about Qui-Gon and the Jedi? (Sounds like a Vegas lounge act don't it?) If anyone wants to try I can send detailed pictures of Jedi clothes and props - I have been a nag about this for months, but my modeling skills are week and no one has responded.

I am !@##!@$!#$%! humbled. We need Qui Jon and OBi Wan!!!

I will work on Obi Wan and Qui Gon Jinn for future characters and posts. I was having a big problem with Maul's boots (props) preserving the bend characteristics when parented to the foot. Also, for some reason Poser would forget that they were supposed to be parented to the feet respectively any time I reopened the pz3 file, or added the .cr2, though both files were saved with the proper heirarchy. I solved this by adding the boots to the character .obj mesh as a replacement for the shins, and that is working beautifully. I am just compiling a few more poses, and facial expressions, and then I will zip up and post. This character is based on a Poser3 model, and texture template, so the only thing that Poser3 users will not get as a feature with Darth, is the native transparency effects from the lightsaber. The rest should work fine in both P3 and P4. I will probably have this totally completed by this weekend. Communion

Ehmm..not sure..but wasn't his whole body mottled with those red patches..and his entire head..not just his face? Not sure..but I think that it was a feature of his race..that mottled red patched skin.. Any Star Wars trivia experts out there can check into this?

Ghost ( ) posted Thu, 19 August 1999 at 9:28 PM

Darth Maul's head was marked with those red patches, but since he wore gloves, i'm not sure if they are on his hands!

astewart ( ) posted Thu, 19 August 1999 at 9:44 PM

True..but there's his chest.see? The tunic is a V neck..so we can see his upper chest..:)And I'm looking at some Phantom Menace wallpaper here, and this does seem to indicate that those patches cover his whole head..so I'd assume it did for the rest of his body too..natural skin pigmentation.. but again I'm not a great Star Wars fan..would be nice to get it all authentic and such..

I modelled the texture map from a poster that shows a straight on view, and also a left profile. It is very distinct in the photograph that the facial markings only come up to the middle horn at the apex of the skull, and come down the cheeks in a "Death Mask" of coloration. This is only what I have observed in the images at hand, and other sources on the web that I have come across. (I downloaded about 5-10 pics of him to work from as well.) Communion

I looked at my Darth Maul figure, and Communion has the markings and coloration exactly as the figure. Only his face is red with the markings. From his ears back (as shown in the image here) is black, as is his neck and small part of the chest that is visible. Again, fantastic job!!!

Good work! Do you have any custom characters in the works? P.S., Is Machine-works still alive? I've thought about doing some real "posing" for a change. >8:P -Angstrum Matrox

Yes I have a couple of custom characters in the works for a website storyline. Machine Werks is now defunct, however, Adam has opened up a new club on Capitol Hill at 10th and Union. It is called the Mercury. I haven't been there yet, as I am too busy with relationship, art, and Microsoft, but maybe we could go hang out, grab some drinks, Pose a while, and talk about art? Let me know. My email is communion@rocketmail.com, or a-dantos@microsoft.com if you want to get ahold of me. Communion

If anyone cares, the facial markings are red tatoos on otherwise completely black skin. The horns and the eyes are natural, though. :)
