Anybody, tried this because the description about using the grayscale images for a green channel and a red doesn't seem to work for me. I can't seem to get photo-paint 9 to do this. They don't give much information on this part in the tutorial. Other than photoshop what other programs can you assign channels to what image you want.Older PE and Fireworks 2004 are more limited w/ channel support so, they don't appear to work here either. Corel Photo-paint has good color support, 48-bit etc... so I am wondering how many programs can actually do this or maybe I am missing something.

This is a nice tool, but I see few options, or switches. Maps are too low res for some things and it is reversing some depths. I only used it on one project I will have to see what can be done with it. I am checking out the nvidia ones listed. ATI has one for using from 3d objects...haven't tried to see if it can read 2d. Altho I got a nice map from corel photo-paint performing similiar technics it took too long and too many steps. I would suggest using the gimp w/ the plugin available for normal maps. Very nice and quick. Gimp will currently only support 8-bit tho. (Don't know about betas)Info and links here, as well as other related info.No need to think outside the box....

I found this site while doing a search about displacement mapping. The author offers a free software for extracting displacement maps from normal maps, and a method for making either normal, or displacement maps from your own photos with minimal tools: PhotoShop, a digital camera, a directional light source,(flashlight) and a computer. This may be old hat to some of you, but the method he uses seems fairly simple and straight-forward so I'll definitely give it a try. Cheers, Dan
