Now this is a personal preference only, but one thing I like about on-line is the anonymity, with these avatars I think it is better not to use a photo of oneself. It diminishes the mystique of a personality. Male, female, young, old, pretty, pretty ugly, the only time I have every felt I gained from seeing a photo of someone's real world self has been when the person is indisputably and tremendously hot... even then sometimes I think I lost by it. Then there is the issue of the pretty render girl avatar. I like not knowing whether someone is male or female, but I find it disorienting when guys use sexy hot babes or women use sexy hot fellas for their avatar... personal hang up I guess. What about those third and forth and n'th sexers right? I guess I like though if a male puts up a sexy male like Casette has or a female has put up a sexy female like avatar for karen1573. I guess I am lookist as only the pug-ugly can be :) I guess I like the avitars that revel the character but not the identity? I kinda favor non-anthropomorphic avatars but ernyoka1 has a nice one, I am seeing some other I guess. I dunno... are avatars a good thing?

Mine may not be the 'hottest' of visages, but I still like what I see when I look in the mirror. Also, unlike some, I don't feel the need to hide behind a mask, nor behind a pseudonym. This is meant as criticiam of no one, but simply a statement of my personal feelings and tastes. David P. Hoadley

yes, avatars are good IMVHO. I don't troll the galleries very much, so it gives me a chance to see how creative people can be, given the challenge of remaining within the pixel dimensions and kb. :b_smile:

You make some good points. I'm still tring to figure out what to create. Something different and something I can call my own. So many of the ones I see kind of blend together. While a few stand out. I think avatars are a good thing. Look at the fun they have with them over at Daz.

SophiaDeer ( ) posted Wed, 05 April 2006 at 1:57 PM

How do you put an avatar in anyway please? I cannot seem to find where. Thanks in advance. Nancy

I enjoy avatars actually. Mr. David P. Hoadley, it's nice to see you :) Personally I find it interesting to see if someone looks "anything" like I'd pictured. It's fun to see the avatars people choose and change to. Mine reflects my personality; I think, and as for being a female avatar, well I think my name gave it away anyway lol.

My avatar is the Poser version of me, featured in a few of my images. karen1573, ilona, PurpleJelly and tafsheep will attest that it's a reasonably accurate representation. I also have a photo of me on my homepage so I don't think I give too much away by having an avatar. I don't care if anyone thinks I'm hot or otherwise. Too damn old and cynical for that stuff.

I have a LOAD of avatars. On LiveJournal you more or less use them instead of smilies, so I always try to find one that fits the post. I think I have 86 or 87 avatars (or, as they call them, icons) Here, given the options for a bigger one, I decided to make a whole new one. Based it on one of my own favourite renders. I also wanted it to reflect the ernyoka1/TrekkieGrrrl thing because it confuses a lot of people. I have used avatars of myself as well, on other sites. But a rendered version and a real pic of me. This one is close to 2 years old now but I still like it: AniMayavatar.gif - and it is very much me 😄 Some people use a pseudonym, some don't. Avatars, like nicknames/handles, is a very personal thing, at least to some. I like to see the person behind a name, but I also like to see people be creative 😄

My avatar isn't too exciting but it explains my id name which is from my e-mail address. That's what happens when you have to come up with something in the wee hours of the morning after hours spent getting the PC up and running. I was sitting in a room with my guinea pigs and my tropical fish so "pigfish" was born. The avatar is a cross between Steve's (PoserWorld) guinea pig and the original Poser angelfish.

dphoadley said: I don't feel the need to hide behind a mask, nor behind a pseudonym i think for many people it's not a matter of hiding at all, but more a means of expressing aspects of themselves that legal names and actual photographs don't. that's certainly true for me. this particular avatar is an aye-aye (daubentonia madagascariensis), a seriously endangered species of madagascar lemur which uses echolocation to find grubs in trees. google images has lots of cool pictures of aye-ayes. i like strange and funky things, especially if they're alive. :)

I use the one shown here just about everywhere (except Outpost Gallifrey where, ironically, I use "Boris for Michael" morphed into a non-canon version of the Doctor from "Doctor Who"). It's lil' ol' me wearing a mask I sculpted, cast and air-brushed for some of my earlier sci-fi convention attendances. I no longer wear it as I've filled out just a tad and I fear I'd look more like Garfield than a cyberpunk felinoid mutant. Sincerely, Bill

I simply tried to make a render that reflected my user name (though it didn't come out as well as I had planned.) I have one I like much better that I use on a football team message board, but it is a bit inappropriate for here I think. For those that didn't watch cartoons in the 80's, Destro was an agent for Cobra on the cartoon GI Joe. I joined 'Rosity while sitting in a boring class a few years back, and it was the first name that popped into my head. I almost exclusively use AlioTheFool as a user name everywhere I join now, if not then GlycerineJester, or my real name. I do use destro75 on all of the 3D sites, simply in case someone needs to recognize the name for some odd reason.

This I dedicate to Foxseelady, who misses the sea. "Sea-Fever" I must down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by, And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking, And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking. I must down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied; And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying, And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying. I must down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life, To the gull's way and the whale's way where the wind's like a whetted knife; And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over. By John Masefield (1878-1967). (English Poet Laureate, 1930-1967.) May you live to realize your dreams. David P. Hoadley

The version I saw was with Haim Topol. I've never seen Zero Mostel act. As for posting, it took me most of a day to do that picture, because each time I went to render it'd freeze my computer; thus forcing me to start from scratch. Finally I learned my lesson, and started saving after adding each element. An ordinary knucklehead would've known that from start, but I had to suffer through three failures to wise up. I like Avatars. They add some character to what would otherwise be just another boring looking forum. Most people pick an avatar associated with their gender, though not always. Some prefer ambiguous ones. If someone wants to use a picture of themselves, I have nothing against that. I'm too shy to post my picture in a public forum, not to mention I wouldn't want to run any of you off, LOL I'm female so tend to go with "girly" avatars. The one I selected to use is part of an image from my gallery. I have made others and will change them periodically just to add some variety. But I really like the one I'm using now so will probably stick with it for a long while.
