Subject: How do i mark one single thread as read?

wabe ( ) posted Mon, 10 April 2006 at 7:53 AM · edited Tue, 19 November 2024 at 10:17 AM

Was discussed before maybe in several other threads but i have not found that specific one. So how my friends? I read and re-read and re-read and... The yellow stars stay yellow whatever i do. Of course i can turn them off or make all in a forum switch to "read" manually. But is this really an advantage above the old system? I dont think so. As others what i see is myself coming here to Renderosity not so often anymore. Is that really the purpose of the new design? I wonder.

Here is what I do. I arrive at the forum, click the statement next to the page numbers called "sort by last reply" or "sort by post date". If it says "sort by last reply" click it and the threads that have new posts in them will move to the top of the list. Go down the list and read each one that has a yellow star next to it. Once you are done, click "[mark all before 8:16am read]" What that does is mark all of the threads that were "new" at the time you arrived in the forum (in this case for me 8:16am). The time in that area will then change to the time you clicked it, IE: 8:24am. Any yellow stars that are there after you have done that, are threads that have had new posts made to them since you arrived at the forum IE: 8:16am. It is a bit of a pain, and one I hope they will fix. There is a thread about "killing the yellow stars" here in the forum that also has some information on how to make your threads change colour after you have read them. It involves making changes to your visited links colour in your Browser Options, and over riding the site's settings.

You don't my friend. "Is that really the purpose of the new design? I wonder." Don't imagine machiavellianism where there is only incompetence.

wabe ( ) posted Mon, 10 April 2006 at 8:34 AM

@Acadia - i read that and yes, that is what i do too. But this can't be serious. To force me to do stupid tricks (sorry for the word) myself. One thing i forgot - where are the message notes on the forum pages? Is it not important anymore to be informed? @Adavyss - i am always optimistic that these things are only temporarily. But the new weaknesses last a little long in my eyes.

@wabe - that's true, you are optimistic to call that "weaknesses". What really drives me nuts is to see mods and williamsn left on their own to answer the frustration of users. I always thought this place was poorly managed, now I'm wondering if it is managed at all. No explanation, no apology, no time table... nothing. The sound of silence !

GPFrance ( ) posted Mon, 10 April 2006 at 12:08 PM

@Adavyss Sounds of silence... As Wabe remarks rightly, people jest will be "coming here not so often anymore", if forums remain difficult to read, opaque, and unhandy to participate, as they are now. If the top pages stay thus, without listing the answer posts below each thread, without search for author, I fear that this could be the end. Looks like suicide. Honestly, I'd regret rendero forums... :-(

Attached Link: http://market.renderosity.com/mod/forumpro/showthread.php?thread_id=2642265

Copy the below line and paste it into your style box (My Options).

a.forum_threadname_link:visited, a.forum_threadname_link:active { font-size:12px; color:#FFFFFF; }

Then change the "FFFFFF" to the hexidecimal value of the color you want. I used '808080' for grey.  Works perfectly.

See Calyxa's post in the linked thread for a link to color hex values.

Thanks Jackson for the proposition.

But i definitely will NOT do any coding on my side to have access to most simple features that every amateur forum i know has. I simply stay away more often from Renderosity.

Hi, Wabe ! I never saw you in such a temper... To get Wabe angry, one must apply much energy, know-how, and perseverance ! "Voting by feet"... : apply animation to the latter, and activate inverse kinematics, so to move on : go elsewhere. Stomp ! ;-) before going away to stroll on sunny side of black forest. Ouups, linefeeds are gone, too....

LOL Gerhard. Will try to do so - still a little snow here btw. Anybody some snow here??? We have some to give for almost free!

Jackson, thanks for  the tip.

@wabe
Just to let you know that Jackson's tip works like a charm, in case you reconsider your position....
Not to use this tip is a self-imposed punishment.
It can take ages before they fix it.

"Voting by feet we call that in Germany". I know what you mean, but it is also a self-imposed punishment. They don't give a damn. It's probably more productive to complain untill this pathetic piece of software can do what any "amateur forum" accomplish.

wabe ( ) posted Wed, 12 April 2006 at 1:55 PM

Well, i am sure the tip works wonderful. But #1 i use different computers with different browsers so i want a solution that works everywhere - full stop. #2 when Renderosity changed the marketplace structure they have left out "what's new" first. And brought it back when - my guess - they realised that sellings went down. So there is hope, when the figures speak - as Lyne mentioned it too. I can say for myself that i have bought much less here at Renderosity than i did before all those changes that took away features.

You’re welcome, all. I’m glad you find the tip helpful.

I agree with wabe, also: I don’t think we should have to become programmers just to use a web site efficiently.  IMO, it was a silly move.
