Subject: WIP: Rain test and splash test

I am trying to recreate a scene from Star Wars II Attack of the Clones. I have seen someone elese's version and wanted to try my own in Bryce. Comments and any Suggestions extremely welcome! I was think of adding some reflection or the bump rain map on to the ship and then also removing the rain bump from under the ship. Please let me know what you think.

This is cool.  How do you propose to remove bump underneath?  Post work? Bump on ship and its reflectivity to match wet look of ground would be good.  Or perhaps dupulicate ship, use a glass material with your bump applied and the duplicate raised one bryce unit.  If you post the bump out underneath, maybe use a smoothing brush or the like around the edges between rain and no rain to add to realizm.  

I can suggest it but I can't do it.  Good work

skiwillgee, thanks for the comment yeah I am thinking of doing under the ship in post work. I did try some glass on the ship maybe one a little more reflective or something just did not look wet.  I was confused by what you said about a smoothing brush but now I get it. I am also thinkg of adding some pylons or something else in the mid background.

Rain falling to ground past a sheltering object does not leave a sharp demarkation line the same as say a light casting a well defined shadow on the ground.   Make the splash bump smooth off near the edges the same as a light casting a diffused shadow.  Did that make it more clear.

One way you could do a rain splash bump is to take a top view render, and creating the splash bumps over that render, you could use the outline of the ship as a guide as to where not to make splash bumps.

I used the the same technique for a woden stool sitting in the rain. In addition, I also top rendered out where the legs of the stool would be placed in a shallow puddle, so I could make a bump map for tiny waves emanating from them.

And then use that render to create a terrain for the rain ground water? Little confused here Smith. Thanks for the reply though too btw.

Either way, use it as a terrain or as a bump. As a bump renders faster (in my experiments)

Excellent modeling so far,  I would recommend to remove the splashs with postwork, just do a second render without the rain bumb and paste the original image over that and then use the object transparency brush or a tool like that to remove it.

This might not help:
 rain splashes against a flat surface and splashes in water are two different things but if you google Harold E Edgerton you'll run into lots of articles on
how they look.  also I think brycetech did some tuts on rain.
