Subject: TECHNICAL - Avatar Updating Procedure :

While uploading your own avatar is a streight forward procedure - there is a situation where a 'replacement' might not appear to be quite so streight forward.

Should you ever decide to replace your avatar - you should follow this procedure:

1 - Delete your old avatar (not essential but probably best).

2 - Upload your new avatar.

3 - Save the changes (even though the thumbnail continues to show your 'old' avatar).

4 - Visit a thread you have posted in - and hold down SHIFT while you click REFRESH.

Those that do 'not' use avatars should also do a SHIFT/REFRESH to update their cache.

Never heard that before...

What is shift+refresh going to do that my plain old refresh does not?

Since before I have just clicked refresh to see the new avatar.

Shift - Refresh forces a full fetch of everything from the server, not your cache (at least, that's what used to happen in IE).  Not sure how much help it will be if your ISP caches stuff.

I didn't refresh anything, just went to a new thread to read, viola...new avatar(s).

It could be related to the browser and settings (or it could be your secret direct link to Rosity).

I.E. 6, no settings (that matter) changed.

It's probably the massive steel Renderosity spike that plugs into the back of my skull...actually.

AgentSmith, I think the reason you didn't have to SHIFT/REFRESH was because you purge your cache everytime you close your browser - at least I think that's what you said.

But yes, SHIFT/REFRESH will reload the graphics from the server - so that's how to update your cache with the latest uploads etc.  This is the reason Fran couldn't see your new avatar, or even see her own replacements.

That said, I'm not sure if this only applies to IE or to the other browsers as well - I only use IE.

-But, I don't read one thread, close my browser, and then open a new window to read another thread. And, that is Firefox that does that, and I'm back to using my I.E. and (usually) only purging everything before shutting down for the night.

But, shift+refresh is very good info to know from now on, thanks for the new know-how.
