I mean, they bought the whole Eovia.

danamo ( ) posted Mon, 24 April 2006 at 7:44 PM

I know I have huge misgivings about this development too!  The steady pace of development is one of the reasons I bought Carrara5.  I didn't upgrade to Bryce 5.5 because I saw no major improvements(not a DAZ-type guy) since DAZ bought it, though they did save it from a slow, lingering death with Corel. Maybe they will release Bryce6 soon and it will amaze long-time users with amazing new features and still be an easy entry into CG for the new user. Or, they may have just tacked on a newer, fancier DAZ figure importer and call it a full upgrade. I'm not into dressing up Koshini, though I have no probs with those that do. Carrara could be a "giant-killer" with its current development pace, and features. I hope DAZ will hang on to Eovia's development team. They would be World-Class stupid to let any of them go!!

Bryce 6 is due to be released in 2006. Yes, it will have more than just a fancier DAZ figure importer. ;o)

Bryce users went through the same growing pains when DAZ bought it, in that they believed this would be the end of their program or that their program would be inserted underneath Studio's gui.

No worries, imho.

Well, I am sure these things are always abit up in the air and that people can get a bit worried, but I haven't seen that DAZ is a bad company. They show a concern for the community. I think they are at a growth stage and it is hard to measure that by what they haven't done with Bryce or Mimic. D|S has alot going for it. Trying to handle their growth means newly acquired products take time to get going. My understanding was that carrara had downtime when it was up in the air from meta creations. They are getting good developers, they sell content and at their heart they are artists so it could be much worse. Together we could end up with some very powerful tools.

Content Advisory! This message contains profanity

The situation with Eovia is completely different from Bryce.  With Bryce they were buying a neglected program without any of the programmers behind it. They are getting the Eovia team along with their products so there should be no disconnect in their development cycle.

All this "DAZ bought Eovia and now Carrara and Hexagon are going to suck!" stuff is just the usual internet Chicken Little crap.

From the announcement about acquiring Hexagon, but not Eovia Europe, I would say that that has already happened.

Dan Farr (of DAZ) said the developers were staying and that hex preorderers would be taking care of. But he also said.

"P.S. For those of you who have not pre-ordered Hex2 don't do it yet. There is some additional news that you should hear before you do."

Also said that they had a contract thru 2.1 of HEX. So I am wondering if HEX won't get absorbed into something, maybe carrara(I prefer this anyway, I think) the bad option may be to not plan to continue it. I suppose they may cripple it via licensing restrictions or something. They sell content not modelling, but I am hoping they are trying to change that. Anyway, didn't like the sound of it, since I just bought hex  1 because these features didn't go into carrara and then pre-ordered hex 2, which I admit I have never done(preordered). So I read the press releases, I want to know what the other shoe is? Lot of poser users worried also.

Good for Carrara's popularity - more DAZ models rendered in Carrara galleries.

Good for DAZ3D - a better (alternative) renderer now for D|S users, as well as a modeler (Hexagon).

Good for Hexagon users - No more French programmers who insist on selling Beta software to its users.  DAZ3D will provide much better support for Hexagon and squash bugs better than Eovia France ever would.

Very good for DAZ3D - Close down Eovia and totally gut-out Carrara and Hexagon from the 3D scene and use their technologies in new Bryce and D|S apps only.

If that were true, Bryce's guts would have been shoveled underneath the Studio gui by now, lol.

If p3do can add "Open with Daz" and "Open with Carrara" I don't think we will have any great traumas.

I haven't heard word from the wonderful developers - Digital Carvers Guild, Inagoni, etc. who have been working to improve Carrara - any love lost there?

Never Give Up!

danamo ( ) posted Tue, 25 April 2006 at 1:12 AM

I sincerely hope not!  The added functionality provided by Carrara's 3rd party plug-in and shader developers is an invaluable resource.

ShawnDriscoll ( ) posted Tue, 25 April 2006 at 1:18 AM

As long as DCG and Inagoni etc have access to an SDK, we'll keep seeing new plugins.

ren_mem!   I Think exactly what you say here. I'm worry about all this, Daz is the leader in poser content but not in software. I'm waiting H2 with anxiety.

ren_mem ( ) posted Wed, 26 April 2006 at 1:05 AM

Sunfirexed,
HEX2 is coming, so don't worry.  The only slight worry is where it's future is, however, that would be true anyway. None of these programs ever is a guarantee. Amapi Designer was replaced. I think DAZ is trying to get some software tools. I think they are also trying to get the dev power to pull it off. If they do it will be fantastic for everyone so tho I am a bit anxious, I will choose to remain positive about it. This goal has been going on. If it hasn't been at the pace people would like...Gotta give them credit...they are a small company. I am VERY much a supporter of this over giant publically traded companies.

I do find the PC club push a turn off, like many, but some people like it. Everybody has to market...it's a fact of life. Geesh look at commercials. They are so far off the map most of the time, but people buy the junk.(When I look at the billions spent on junk food commercials with starving children everywhere, man I want to shake some sense into these thoroughly misguided people) Believe it or not, DAZ is polite and responsive as a company.

D|S has great OGL performance, I would like to see Carrara have this. But the catch22 is the API is not open technology and I have no idea what the license costs are. So I have mixed feelings there.  We will have to see. Remember both of these companies started with people who worked for someone else and decided to go out on their own.  Taking risks w/  less than great situations and  acquiring languishing programs they thought had value. They are both privately held companies. I think I will go along for the ride and see where it goes!
