Subject: Totally OT...But with concerns about the "Bird Flu?"

genny ( ) posted Tue, 25 April 2006 at 11:28 AM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 9:29 AM

Hey all,

I know I have not been posting for a While, but due to my recent purchase of a puppy, I have discovered something that really has me concerned.  My new puppy, as well as my older dog, just "LOVES" jerky like "chicken strips" that I can buy readily from stores like "Costco" and "Walmart".

I don't know why I looked at the "ingrediantes", but I discovered that "they" were made in "CHINA!" Each state that they are made from "Chicken" from "REAL CHICKEN". Weather this is "true" or not is not my concern.........my concern is............the "BIRD FLU!"

From now on.......I will most definately look at the packinging.......to see "where" it was made and exported from..........the "Experts" don't know if a "Pandemic" will occur.......or How it may be transmitted........but "NOW"  that I Know, her favorite treats are being "imported" from the orient.............I thinik I will just cook her a chicken.......and then "maybe" we can have some too! (:

You, nor your puppy, can catch bird flu from chicken products no matter where they come from. Do some reading up on the subject before before having a panic attack.

genny ( ) posted Tue, 25 April 2006 at 12:24 PM

I am not having a panic actic.  I have read up, seen documentries, and work for an "airline:...........the possibilities are there.  Nobody knows where it comes from right now.........but when my "Dogs" get "CHICKEN" strips from "China"............it makes me wonder?

How many "CHICKENS" are killed everyday in the US?  Why aren't my dogs eating "Chicken Strips" from those Chickens?

I am not in a Panic mode, nor will I be..........but I will NEVER buy those things again for my dogs.

I was just "VERY SURPRISED" that something like "dog" treats were imported from China.............I "NOW" wonder.........what else are we eating, giving our children, feeding our elderly parents...........and .WHO KNOWS????

Did not mean any "Offense" to anyone........just thought I would pass along what I discovered.

My dog is on a strict vegetarian diet because his kidneys are shot and can't process animal protein and he's thriving.

The "meat" that goes into pet food is whatever is not fit for human consumption and the meat that's supposedly fit to eat often is not. (talk to anyone in a supermarket meat department). Mad Cow and other meat-borne sicknesses are rampant in the US but you'll never hear it mentioned in the MSM.

You have to come into direct contact with the blood of a diseased bird to contract "bird flu". 200 people out of 20 billion does not make a "pandemic". Bird flu is just another contrived emergency to keep the public preoccupied while the bank is looted.

At the moment, chicken from China, Vietnam, the USA or anywhere else isn't a problem, More chance of you and your little doggy getting hit by a truck than getting Bird flu!!

whilst the PRC's southern provinces have been (and will continue to be) the sources of any new avian viruses, the likely transmission routes are via migration of wild birds, and human travel from the southern provinces, whether by foot, boat, motor-car or airline. I doubt that the sort of shoddy, substandard goods they sell at walmart are likely sources of transmission of the H5N1 influenza virus, but the chief reason for not shopping at walmart is quite simple. a considerable percentage of each purchase there goes to the build-up of the PRC's military, which has stated the purpose for its buildup is to bring it to the point where it can wage a successful land and sea war against the U.S. for control of taiwan. hence, if one supports walmart, one supports the hegemonists in the PRC's dictatorship. similar to the way one supports terrorists by filling up one's SUV every few days, but that's a threat of a different colour.

BUT WHY WOULD THE US IMPORT "CHICKENS" FROM ANYWHERE? That just Baffles me?  Have all the chickens left the the country for better ways of life?????

xantor ( ) posted Tue, 25 April 2006 at 1:24 PM

If the chicken is cooked it will be safe to eat.

steveshanks ( ) posted Tue, 25 April 2006 at 1:25 PM

"BUT WHY WOULD THE US IMPORT "CHICKENS" FROM ANYWHERE?".....Same reason as we in the UK do it, its cheaper, they pay the workers in China peanuts and the premises and feed are dirt cheap.........Steve

BUT WHY WOULD THE US IMPORT "CHICKENS" FROM ANYWHERE?

For the same reason we import VCRs, cars, toys, shoes, American flags, furniture, fruit, clothes, etc.  It's cheaper.  Americans decided long ago that cheaper is better, even at the cost of their own jobs.

Your dog is probably more at risk from eating an infected wild bird than from chicken treats.  Several cats have gotten bird flu in Europe, apparently because they ate dead wild birds.  Dogs may have a similar risk.

I saw on the news that a bird from the UK had bird flu but I haven't heard anything else about it since then and that was quite a while ago.

I feel that when 'Foot and mouth' hit the UK it was more serious than bird flu and they got very strict about importing and exporting of meat when 'mad cow diease' struck. People worried but still went to McDonalds

FYI  "Bird Flu" (avian influenza A (H5N1) virus) is not limited to the country of China :)  This influenza is in many countries, including Canada and the USA.

Also, there is no evidence that indicates that properly cooked poultry and eggs is a source of infection. The virus becomes inactive when it's heated to 60 degrees Celsius/30 minutes, and by an acidic PH.  In the case of "Jerky" which is dehydrated and cured, the amount of salt used creates an acidic environment.

The method of transmission is by oral/nasal secretions and feces.

Those affected usually have prolonged close contact with an infected bird in a confined space.. Also  slaughtering, plucking of feathers, butchering and preparation for cooking are high risk activities.

The chances of your dog becoming sick from chicken jerky imported from China or anywhere else is slim to none.

As an antidote, I recommend renting or buying "Chicken Run"

That way, at least you'll die laughing... :)

Seriously don't worry this is the latest health scare.

Do a little research on the WWI pandemic and consider the fact that we have no vaccine and a woefully inadequate supply of a questionable treatment (tamiflu) and tell us its just a "health scare."  The WHO and governments aren't spending millions and planning because of the latest fad.  If the organism makes the genetic jump to human-human transmission, we could all be in deep doodoo.  There's no need for panic but it's foolish to dismiss the risk as just another "scare" IMO.

" Dead Cats & Dogs Used To Make Pet Food "

We see pictures of whole grains, prime cuts of meat and human grade vegetables on the bag, and we assume there's some chef in a pet food kitchen cooking up the best for our loved ones. Unfortunately, this is far from the truth. Most of what makes up dog and cat food comes from the rendering plant.

Great. Feeding dead cows to other cows was what caused mad cow disease. Human cannibal tribes were wiped out by something very similar. Seems like one of nature's little safeguards: eat your own kind and eventually the prions will come for you.

How long until we see canine spongiform encephalitis? And the why the hell don't we ever learn?

Lots of rice from California is exported to other countries, then put into a product and sent back. Doesn't surprise me that the chicken jerky is too. I want to know more about this walmart thing, can you I.M. me a url?

genny ( ) posted Wed, 26 April 2006 at 12:04 PM

Thanks everyone for your replys.....I certainly learned something from your posts.  Most especially from "skuts".  Reading those posts from the link,  really "shocked" me.  My dogs really "prefer" people food and the newest one will eat just about anything..........I guess I am/was somewhat "ignorant" and "nieve"............as I really thought that what-ever was made for my pets.......was not harmful to them or anyone else who may eat them..............Like my "Grand-kids!"

Attached Link: Doggie Treats

Since this is already OT, here are some recipes for doggie treat for those concerned about not only the ingredients and the additives but also the cost!  My doggies think "breath busters" are greenies and love getting them! They are a lot less expensive for me to make and the parsely, mint does freshen their breath.

Of course follow the concerns of your special friend with any recipe. An allergic animal would not do well with wheat flour. I  personal don't like using white flour and substitute if for rice w/wee bit of soy which is easier for fussier stomachs to digest.

You'll have to weed through the list, some I would personally not use, but is a nice variety, perhaps you can find something here.
