Hi David,
I haven't had many speed issues at all with the forums since converting. But the speed will slowly improve as time goes on..The main reasons you may be seeing some slow times are probably when the programmers are working on something due to the conversion and its slowing things down. But even then I think its much better than when the forums were on the .ez platform.
Another possibility for slow access is the wider internet. Certain 'routes' can be slow at different times of the day. Some people will be sat there for half a minute waiting for a page, others will fly in. One way of checking if this is the case (I suspect) is to compare response times with the store (or other Rendo areas). If the store is quick and the forums slow, it's a fair bet that the problem is on the forum side. If both are slow, it's probably your route through the internet to Rendo that's slow.
I think there are also browser compatibilty issues for some members. Two regulars in the Bryce forum (one of whom definitely uses AOL, not sure about the other) have just given up for the time being.
Not a good sign.
.
As the chief programmer of the forums, I have a set of times printed out at the bottom of every page that times how quickly a page was processed so that I know how the queries are running and where our slow spots are on each page. I can tell you now that there are 914 people online and this page processed in 0.5264 seconds. I'd say that's not bad. It loaded in the blink of an eye over here. I haven't had any problems in speed except when we're running scripts on the database to fix things. Which isn't often. shrugs

Quote - I have been really impressed with the speed in the last two weeks.
Flying now.
This is quite strange because for the last 2 weeks my access times for the site have slowed to a crawl, it's frustrating beyond belief. I'm using the latest version of Firefox on a 1mb dsl connection and it came take upto 2 minutes to load the first page, what's going on?
...In Lak'ech...
I have also notice a slow down in the forums and it is slower that the old board. Using a cable connection which rarely had a problem with the old board unless the sql went away or whatever that message was. Is the slowest caused when a reply is being posted? It is on average slower than the old board. @ Mr. Programmer (Williamsn) how about adding that script to tbe pages as do other sites so we can see the time pages are taking to load. As it seems you do not believe that for some of us the site is slower. TIA
The important thing is not to stop questioning.

FasterFox, however, times it on your end. This includes the time to send the request and receive the data, which can vary depending on user connection. The real test is how quickly the page is GENERATED by the server, which can only be tested using a server-side script. I'll find out from the admins about putting a line at the bottom telling you how fast your pages are being generated.
-Nicholas
interesting. then what is blocking your servers from getting the data out to us users?
here on my connection, this is the only slow site. all others and I mean all others, some with far more users and far more traffic (EBay, Amazon, etc) make this site look like a lame snail.
yay you generate the pages fast. if they don't get to the USER fast then big deal.
also if any admin wants to say it's US and not the servers one more time, IM me for my address and come round here and try it. that is a serious offer.

Trace complete.
while there's a timeout, still a reasonable trace time.
but..... page load time .... 18.995 seconds.... (the above trace (with timeout) took 6 seconds)
anyone wanna explain the disparity of 13 seconds?
"anyone wanna explain the disparity of 13 seconds?"
That's the time it takes the old dear on the rosity switchboard to put her knitting down, throw the cat off her lap, and find the right plug to stick in the `forum' jack in the switchboard :D
Seriously though, it can take ages for a page to load one minute, and no time at all the next. It's very irregular in performance.

One possibility with your example is that you are comparing page loading at one address with a trace route to another.
A tracert to market.renderosity.com at the time of worse (apparent) site response will be interesting. Having said that, Nicholas has already intimated that page generation at the server is the key issue. Having said that, it's been really flying today (from here in the UK) so far, with user numbers ranging from 600ish to 1200+. So it doesn't appear to be site traffic that's the problem.
Maybe take a look at which server Solitaire and Tetris are stored on at Bondware HQ. ;-)

fun fun fun seems the servers do not exist. yay.
but since all the rendo servers are at 1 site and unless they've reconfigured, going through 1 gateway ( as stated numerous times in the past by Tim, and would explain the inability to ping or trace the market server) we've got something on the test with my previous post.
I ran a tracert to market.renderosity.com and am 13 hops away.
I ping'ed market.renderosity.com and 48ms was the average.

well, I can say it's been a lot slower on my end accessing forums and threads. I can sort of live with that, however, the problem I'm having is doing a search in the gallery for all gallery posts with the word "davo". Ever since the switch I have never been able to get a search result, just a "server cannot be found" error. This result is on both my work computer and home computer.
I'm not sure that I have the tools to provide useful info, but often the problems with speed are either with the initial connection, or part-way through the process. I'm thinking I'd need to be gathering data at the TCP/IP level. I've had things stall when posting a message to the thread, but that message turns out to be there. I suspect packets are being dropped somewhere. It seems unlikely to be local to me, or it would affect more sites, but there's a vast and tangled ocean between here and there.
I use my brother's computer. He recently went to 1MB internet high speed from dial up. I sit here and wait and wait and wait. It always says, "Waiting for www.renderosity.com". After anywhere from 15 to 45 seconds it finally moves. When it moves, it runs fast. When it moves. This is the only site in many that I visit that I have any troubles with. It has nothing to do with my computer if all other sites work fine. How can you even suggest that when all my other sites are doing very well? My brother has told me the same things repeatedly and he has been here before me for some time.I have not been here long and only visit on weekends, generally. But, when I do come to this site, it is the same thing. Wait, wait, wait. And, more wait. Then it moves and moves fast. When it finally does move. What is different about this particular site on my computer that would cause all these long delays that I never experience on all the other sites, forums, and chat boards I use? It seems like to me that you dismiss all above who bring up this concern like it is their problem and not yours? By the way, I experience this waiting period in any area of your site I attempt to go to. I also have the same problems with your site when I am using my sister's laptop computer at home or my computer at my place of employment. It seems peculiar to me that all three computers at three different locations regularly experience the exact same issues?Like I said before, once your site finally does move, it moves rapidly.
I understand what your'e saying about it couldn't be your computer if every other site on the internet is working. I'm not arguing that issue. However, I would say that the LONGEST, the LONGEST I've ever waited for the "Waiting for market.renderosity.com..." message to turn into movement, is 10-12 seconds, except for two times when we were doing maintenance on a table and then it slowed everything to a crawl. And I'd say 90% of the time, I never even see the "Waiting for market.renderosity.com..." message. It just flies. Nicholas

It is a tiny bit faster for me lately...I am just not sure why...what really scares me is that the Gallery is SUPER FAST for me lately...and I know they are going to change that!
I am hanging in, and using the forums that I NEED to, and watching the progress... but Stacey... do remember it's different for everyone, with the internet it depends on SO MANY factors so saying "it's fast for me" does not mean it is for many or most users... in the past here, it has taken over 30 seconds to load a forum page or longer and I just would give up and go away...despite my DSL connection with IE6... AND that is when I could load ALL other sites fast and furious...so it was rosity...
And while I have your ear...I hope the reply BOX could be at least as large as the forum width..these scroll bars are awaful for reading what I have written!! (I need to use "small" font size so I can SEE what I am writing!)
I would also like to kow if there is a thread that has a very SIMPLE clear script listing for forum colors, as my modified one is really a bit dark for me...and I need a simple cut and paste text...hopefully with a thumbnail example?
Life Requires Assembly and we all know how THAT goes!
I haven't seen any difference whatsoever. Pages load at highly varying speeds - sometimes quickly, sometimes slower, sometimes very slow - exactly the way it was before, in other words. Time of day, number of users - none of that seems to matter. Even if I access a page and it takes ten seconds to load, the next page I try may only take one second, and the one after, maybe 15 seconds, regardless of image content, avatars and all that. Highly varying.
Speed of the site continues to be a big problem for me, and I am able to spend less and less time at Renderosity as a result. I agree it is quite variable...at times the store is even slow, but mainly it's the galleries and, at times, the forums. It happens more often than can be explained as "we must have been doing maintenance." My main gripe (which, Stacey, I know you've heard me say before) is the slowness of the galleries. I can only hope that the change over which you say will happen in 5-ish weeks will help matters.
I STILL believe that the server capacity could always have been expanded here to handle the load and improve site speed for everybody. But that does cost more $$.
I was SO INCREDIBLY impressed yesterday over at DAZ, with all the Hexagon 2.0 activity, when they added TEN additional servers because their customers complained about the slowness. I just wish we'd have seen that sort of responsiveness from the owners here.
