THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: OT...I'm a real jinx

CrazyDawg ( ) posted Sun, 21 May 2006 at 11:27 PM · edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 3:56 PM

You all remember the problem i had with my computer rebooting when i used bryce or D|S and the heating problem. Then Mahrays's computer borked on him and then Frans's Laptop borked on her.

Well i have come to the conclusion that i am a jinx, after getting the power supply replaced in my computer by my friendly(I wont charge labour) tech guy, his main computer for his business borked on him the day i picked mine up, his test computer which he uses for testing hard-drives and such borked on him on thursday after i went and got a price on something for the wife's computer. The worst one was my wifes computer, I had just cleaned the dust off the box an monitor 5 minutes before her turning it on and guess what...you got it, it's borked.

We get lights on the hard-drive, cd-rom and can hear the fans running. Monitor powers up but we get a message on it telling us to check the cables to make sure they are plugged in correctly.

I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.

Hey DAWG, is you so much as put the word COMPUTER in another post I am climbing through this monitor and pop riveting you to a wall.

I have a sata drive on the fritz. A grafix card that has its moments, and second grafix card that can't make up its mind if it is fast or slow.

I need your input to this disaster like I need a hole in the head. Think happy thoughts and remember 'COMPUTER' is a dirty word.

Cyba_Storm, i promise when i talk about those things i can't use that word for i'll use PC instead :tongue2:

Take your wifes machine apart, clean everything. Before my system borked on me, I had to clean everything, it bought me a few months. This means even the power supply(inside). It's a bit of a task but sometimes worth it.......NEXT, re-seat everything, even check the bios battery. If the graphics card is toast, you can try re-seating IT. If not.....then try to pull it and use the onboard video connect.

Symptoms sound like video issue......but ya never know.

Good luck and try to visit a witch doctor soon to lift the bork.

CrazyDawg,
This last week am old w98 computer with an ATI RAGE PRO Turbo AGP 2x video card wasn't running properly so I thought I'd try to fix it.It ran 8 16 and  32 bit but not 24. Well I took my nvidea card from another computer in it and all it would give me is 16  colors. so I put the old one in and sure enough 16 colors.  I checked the bios memory which gave me the cards name so I figured the bios was OK I went to ati and got the updated driver for it. The driver wanted directx 8.1 to run so I got the  runtime from microsoft. still  16 colors. well  I tried and retried until I remembered an old trick.
Sure enough the video driver in the system .ini file was set to vga.drv. updated that info something like vdd.vxd (the display driver's file is listed in ControlPanel:system:display) and prestochango dontwantnowinabego !!! Bob and Fanny were my mother's siblings.

The moral to this needless and boring story is that those in charge of making these things make them overly difficult probably so people won't mess around with them while they are under warrantee and their so called failsafes are usually simple but adequate.

Now if the cat would come home I'd be all set. Well except for the fact that the dx8.1  I put on the system is incompatable with the old sb awe 32 soundcard so now I gotta rummage around for an old PCI sound blaster with 16 meg for it. Not so shabby when you consider the computer shop down the street sells such things used - not as cheaply as they should be but then I'm not complainin'.

As to you being a jinx: I think you might be carrying around a static electric charge or something like that. Another possibility is that The power transformer in your area might be putting out less than normal voltage thereby messing up everything electric.

Well guys i'll be happy in a few days time. Stepson came down from Perth and took the computer there to his tech guy where we got the cpu, motherboard and video card from. after what he said seem like ten minutes he found out the motherboard was the problem. 30 minutes later the computer was up and running with another motherboard in it...i just say thank god for warrenty..

I always stick by ASUS mainboards myself. Never had one go bad.

Pass no temptation lightly by, for one never knows when it may pass again!

LMAO...this one that borked on my wife was an ASUS motherboard, only 9-10 months old.

You guys musta had a rough summer. I don't think that most computers a made for that kind of heat. Course Phoenix was not so easy to live in either 105-110F daytime 8 months of the year. Fresno's about 90-95F 7 months a year. We're just getting into that now. Warantees gotta love 'em!!

Out of the ten boxes I have worked through over the years, and those of my friends (another 7 boxes) no ASUS m/b has failed (they were all ASUS btw)(and several were overclocked).  Sh.. happens though and nothing is perfect.
