Subject: Looking for a sci-fi/industrial set/scene; details inside

Hellwolve ( ) posted Mon, 26 June 2006 at 4:47 AM · edited Sun, 12 January 2025 at 8:27 PM

I'm looking for a sci-fi/industrial set/scene, which I'll use as an HQ for the characters I'm creating. It can be commercial or free; I'm simply looking for links to items I may have missed. I'd like to have said set/scene contain the following:

  • An industrial/sci-fi look (obviously), but not older then 20th century; no steampunk, unless those elements can be changed.
  • An dirty look; not squeaky clean like, say, Star Trek.
  • A office, platform or other corner where I can set up an array of screens and computers or something like the Dystopian™ Cyber-Seat. In other words, I don't want to plunk it down on the middle of a floor ;)
  • A large set of doors, through which something like, say, a mech can enter.

Obviously, the more of these things a set has, the happier I'll be to purchase/downloading it :-) Currently, I'm contemplating four items.

First of all, I'm considering Level 19, but that doesn't have a office, platform or other corner where I can make a nice 'hacker' set-up.

Secondly, I've got BARCode's free Workshop, but although it's quite nice, there are some things I don't like about it and it can't be changed at all.

Thirdly, I'm thinking about Ratracer's Old Factory, but I don't know about the entrance, which I'll be showing with people walking in and such. Perhaps someone can tell me about it or show it?

Lastly, I'm considering IronWorks - The Workshop. Of the four I've mentioned so far, I like that one the best. I'm not afraid to retexture, which I'll need to get the look right, and it has pretty much everything I want. Safe the space for a mech...

Anyways, anyone got any links to stuff that's not any of the affor mentioned items and has one or more of the points I'd like?

Have you looked at the SFCS at DAZ, you can customize that to how you want it!

Mapps has some excellent Sci-Fi stuff in his store here!

Stonemason has some outstanding Sci-Fi stuff at DAZ as well as the hanger19 that you already mentioned!

You might want to try vanishing point too!

Injustice will be avenged.

I know who you are, BAR-CODE ;-) Now you're 'here', I'll ask: is there any chance of a re-release of your Workshop with seperate props and such?

As for your devotiton to Stonemason...I myself agree that his is cool stuff. 'Tis that I myself am somewhat monetary challenged, too ;-)

Try this...

...it's used on the promo image here. Whole scene took around 1/2 hour to setup (mostly posing M3) and then exported and rendered in Vue.

Pinky - you left the lens cap of your mind on again.

I did repley to your IM ..and given it a thought im not gonna spent time for a re release...

I think for me its better to work forward instead of fixing older things.

the workshop has being downloaded over 3000 times and i hardly see it used, and seeing it used is the only reward for me since its a freebee.

I uploaded a image of something new im making its being done in a different way that should save MB's in polycount and it saves me time..

And i need lots of time to get to know my new program better etc etc.

If this new scene is gonna be a Freebee, who knows... i got to eat too and the reward of seeing things used is not that big here....

And when asked i get answer I use it a lot im just not showing it at R'o ...

hey Chris - I used it! (Posted it to the C4D gallery though).  - an excellent prop and great fun to light.  And great quality for a freebie:)

@BAR-CODE

I love your sets, I apreciate them very much. I do not alas post my renders... half the time I don't save the renders but just archive the .pz3 :)

Also I wish I could aford the Stonemason scenes that is for sure but still I want to make my own if I possibly can. I want to make my own sets out of primitives. I have acumulated a nice set of morphing construction props... I wish there were more... and free! I have the Pond969 Prop Construction Sets from the RMP and they are great... some of the free sets of primitives around have welded vertices unfortunately. I have adapted the Magic Morphin' Torus from Morphography to do more stuff but I wish I had a torus that could do even more than that... I have used grouping and magnets but I still can't get certain shapes such as a teardrop shape from it... also it has a bad vertice or two that show when it is scaled way up.

The main thing though is that I have not found on the web or at Amazon any texts that might help me in set design for science-fiction scenes. How do you decide how much detail clutter is reasonable? How do you not overdo the "nurnies"? I am weary of adding too much detail since I would think that in the future there would be fewer knobs and such on appliences. I need help figuring out how to design future or alien interfaces.

BAR-CODE, can you help?

wertu ( ) posted Mon, 26 June 2006 at 10:51 PM

BTW, BAR-CODE, I have used your SPY DRONE as a manned recon and personal transport craft by adding a spherical bubble "field" to the front as a cockpit. Hope you don't mind, the chuby build is so cool for a ship. I would apreciate anything you gave us/me :) If you go comercial I can patronize you at the $8-$10 level I think... does anyone know if pricing below $10 makes up in volume? My only funds for purchases/donations are derived from some perverted stuff at a certan site... and I don't even do that type of render :)  Am I the only one who actuallly hits the "Make a Donation" button on peoples freebie sites whenever I am able? I certainly try to when I can.

Phantast ( ) posted Tue, 27 June 2006 at 4:55 AM

Bar-code, I would happily use your sets in renders, but your readme seems to indicate that you are adverse to any commercial use of renders involving your work. Since I don't know in advance whether any render is going to be used commercially at some point in the future, I don't use your set. Simple as that.

mrsparky ( ) posted Tue, 27 June 2006 at 5:53 AM

wertu - when you design any sf set - the 1st thing is to consider what is going to be used for ?

Think of Aliens - the sets here are very functional. So map out the basic room shape, then add the detail for example a boiler room will have lots of assorted pipes. where as a control room  would have very few.

Inspiration is best from real life. Walk around the back of a buiilding and see how heating systems enter the building, how doors and windows are blocked up and  how the rubbish is scattered around.

If you want specfic SF ideas - google Syd Mead. He was the conceputal artist for Blade Runner and 2010 amongst many movies.

Pinky - you left the lens cap of your mind on again.
