Subject: Help! - with Epson R1800!

TwoPynts ( ) posted Sat, 24 June 2006 at 2:05 PM · edited Tue, 18 February 2025 at 10:29 AM

Perhaps one have you who own a large format Epson printer have run into this problem: "After printing an image on my R1800 that had a lot of lines in it, I tried using the Epson Printer utility to clean the print heads. In the middle of that test, it just stopped and said it could not be completed. Both the paper feed and ink lights are flashing in unison. I removed the paper and restarted the printer, but they keep flashing and I get no response from pressing anything other than the power button. The troubleshooting guide was not able to help. The printer is less than a year old. More data: Step 1 WHICH MODEL ARE YOU USING? Stylus Photo R1800 Step 2 What were you doing when the problem occurred? Printing Step 3 What happened when you tried to print? No response from the printer (printer just stopped printing) Step 4 What is the power light's current state? Flashing Step 5 What is the ink light's current state? Flashing Step 6 What is the paper light's current state? Flashing Step 7 WHAT IS THE PRINTER'S STATUS? Cover open or paper jam Step 8 The printer lights indicate that the printer has a paper jam or the printer cover is open. Before you can print, you'll need to fix the error. Would you like help fixing this error? Yes Step 9 Close the printer cover. Does that fix the problem? No Step 10 Turn your printer off and on. Does that fix the problem? No Step 11 Where are you loading your paper or CD/DVD? In the sheet feeder Step 12 Clear jammed paper. Does that fix the problem? No Step 13 Does the paper you're using meet your printer's specifications? Yes Step 14 Reload your paper using the instructions below. Does that fix the problem? No Step 15 Make sure the output tray is open. Does that fix the problem? No Step 16 Which operating system are you using? Mac OS X 10.2.4 or later" Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Actually, the power light was off, so I went back an tried the troubleshooting guide again. It looks like my ink cartridge door keeps opening for some reason...gonna keep trying..

I guess we can cancel that, after a few tries I got the door to click shut properly. Problem solved, for now. Mods, feel free to delete this thread, thanks.

...hey Kort ! ----- just a quick question on the R1800 in general ( since you've had it for awhile ) ---- I've been considering getting that model for awhile - ( or the new Canon pigment ink printer when it comes out in Fall ).....I have read many reviews on the 1800  ( gloss optimizer / not as great for B&W as the 2400 etc ) ----but , generally , how satisfied have you been with it ???

Thanks for the tip about the printing forum. I really like the R1800. I'm not sure what benefit I would have really gained going up to the more expensive R2400. I don't print much B&W so that edge is not really needed. The prints of the R1800 are photo-lab quality. I also like the large format option. Like all inkjets and espcially Epsons, if you don't use it for a while, it may need to have a head cleaning cycle run before the real printing starts. On Ilford paper the quality and color knocks my socks off. The gloss optimizer really makes the images pop, but I don't use it unless it is for a special print, and the printing on gloss paper, most won't see a great difference. I also buy compatible inks from ClickInks and have found them to be 99.5% the quality of the Epson inks, at a much cheaper price.

Have you ever used glow in the dark paper with it?

This may or may not be related..

I had an issue with an Epson printer before...

The tube that removes the excess ink when you perform a "clean heads" function, would clog..

(Epson knew about the problem)

I read all the info on it..took it apart..(a huge pain)..followed further instruction..and still couldn't clear the ink tube..

After three days of messing with the printer..I got angry..chucked it out and bought another brand..

I had been a huge Epson supporter..

That wasn't the problem here Bruce, but thanks for the insight. Hopefully they have rectified things with their new printers. I've always wondered though...where does all that ink go? There is no waste cartridge like laser printers have. Hmmmm 😕
