I've worked both with PSP9 and now PS7 to create Poser textures.  I'm really getting into PS now as its capability to handle large files seems to be superior to PSP.  However, there's one little niggle ........

In PSP if I duplicate a layer (say half face image) and want to mirror it - I just go to edit - mirror and voila!  However, in PS if I go to edit - transform, flip horizontal, the image flips, but I have to manually drag it to where I want it to be.

I'm probably missing something really fundamental here, but would welcome any help

First trim the document canvas in image-trim, so that head edges are at very end of canvas. Select whole head and press CTRL+J to copy it on new transparent layer. Delete half head and duplicate the layer, flip it horizontal. Click on Background layer and make sure that you have move tool selected. Link it with fliped face layer and you`ll have align options bellow the menus. Its not fast way, but I hope it will help you :)

thanks!  sounds a bit involved but I'll try it

Try this appoach.

1. Using your rectangular selection marquee select the half of the image you want to mirror.
2. Goto Layer>New>Layer via copy.
3. On the new layer press ctrl+T (transform shortcut).
4. If you look closely you will see in the center of the transform selection a tiny crosshair.
5. With your mouse drage this to the edge of your selection.  It should snap into place at the edge.  This becomes your pivot point for the mirror.
6. Goto Edit>Transform>Flip Horizontal.
7. Press enter and your done!!

You can turn this into an action by making your initial selection as in 1. above and then start recording your action for the remaining instructions 2 - 7.  This way you can achieve a single click mirror like you are used to in PSP.

As I said before this is a great way of doing things, but I don't know how to save the action for future use - when I try, the "save action" option is greyed out

Here is the way of recording action. First click on little triangle in upper right corner to open drop down menu. I would sugest that you make "new set" and name it something like "my actions". Next click on new action and name it "Mirroring", select "my actions" set from set options. Click record and everything you do will be recorded under "mirroring" action. When you done with the work, click on "stop playing/recording" button in action palette. To check does it work, open some new document and select "mirroring" action from "my actions" set, and click on play button in action palette :)

This is a bit off topic from your original question being to flip a half of a face but if you take this process a step further and use you original selection and horizontal mirror and then mirror these two selections vertically you have a nice tileable texture.
