Subject: I had to start a new thread

dadt ( ) posted Mon, 03 July 2006 at 1:26 PM · edited Fri, 24 January 2025 at 1:12 PM

When will the problem of crashing AOLs browser be fixed? Ever since the start of the changes to the site I've had problems on and off, but now the site is completely unuseable.

I can open the front page, browse the galleries and the Marketplace, open up a forum, but when I open a thread my browser shuts down. This is why I've had to open a new thread instead of posting in one of the many previous threads on this topic.

Unfortunately I will not be able to read any replies to this thread unless something is done to rectify the situation.

Before people start saying I should use a different browser, may I say that I am perfectly happy with AOL , which works on every other site I have tried. It is not a small usage browser but is used by millions of people and I should not need to change just for the sake of this one site.

I was going to start a new thread with the above but clicking on the start new thread shut down the browser

Tried to email this to a Moderator but my browser shut down.

Have had to resort to IE to get this in.

AOL's browser is butchered beyond belief; a stripped down version of I.E., part of a $750 million anti-trust settlement filed by Netscape in 2002.  The software doesn't even have full support for Java (last time I checked, may be different now).  Sure, the newest version contains some nifty features, like tear-off tabbed browsing, but let's face it: the browser is still designed to correctly interface with AOL's services more than anything else.  And I'll guarantee you, it excels in that area.

Most of the technical reviews on the AOL browser say it has lots of pretty, colorful icons and contains some useful innovations from Firefox, but the performance and bug issues remain, especially with it being an enormous resource hog.  It eats more memory than any other browser on the market; it appears to be terrible at memory management.

Just because you're an AOL user does not mean you need to use the browser supplied by them.  You can install the full version of Internet Explorer and be happy with most of your problems solved.  Being in the IT field, I belong to several tech forums and throughout the years there has always been the issue of AOL's miserable web browser.  The general recommendation is, don't use it.  Nobody is suggesting you dump AOL for a much better ISP, but you can remedy most of your problems with a complete version of I.E., Opera or Firefox.  You yourself said things work fine here with a full I.E.  If you're having issues with your AOL browser, why not contact (good luck!) AOL's tech support for resolution?  After all, it is THEIR browser causing you grief on this web site.

I just don't think it's Renderosity's responsibility to make certain this site operates cleanly with a buggy browser that is so tailored in one direction: to Time Warner's shareholders.

Of course, there is always the possibility of something wrong with your O/S.

All in MHO.  I'm sure you'd rather hear from the admin than me anyway :)

Everything seems OK now, hope it lasts.

TerraDreamers reply is just what I expected to hear. The fact remains that this is the only site which causes any problem, and there was no problem before the changes to the site.

Well good!  I hope so, too!

I only spoke the truth.

Well, my non-AOL I.E. worked just fine before, during and after.  Hmmm.

Everything you claim about the AOL browser may or may not be true, I am not well versed in IT so I cannot tell.

Regarding the browser being totally aimed at AOL's services it is equally true that IE is totally comitted to Microsoft services.

As for hogging memory, this is not a significant problem but if I use a different browser it will use even more memory as it will run in addition to the AOL browser.

I have been on the web for 1 year now and have had no problems until this one and must have visited thousands of other sites in that time.

Ummmmm...cant you turn the AOL browser off?

Sorry I cant answer your question about the compatibility issues you are having with the AOL browser and RR...the programmers will have to step in here and help out..but being a holiday, I dont know if they will make it in here until Tuesday.

If I turn off the AOL browser I lose my internet connection.

The AOL javascript engine problably can't handle the new editor.
It wasn't until recently that an update to FireFox cured problems for people using that browser.
The currentl available SeaMonkey still has occasional difficulties (but it's possible to use GreaseMonkey scripts to avoid them).

Hmmm doesnt AOL use IE to work anyway?...have you tried a fresh install of AOL?

Both the AOL and IE browsers are fully up to date and working perfectly. Problems have been reported here with almost every browser since the site changes began but the programmers have put things right for everyone except AOL users. Its about time this was rectified.

I've heard nothing good about AOL's browser. I've lost count of the times I've seen the message "For AOL users......................." on websites, implying that if you have AOLyour'e going to have to do something different to the rest of us!!! .  I,ve also heard that if you wand to get AOL off your system, uninstall is not enough, you got to re-format your hard drive to shift all the bits left behind!!!

If it ain't free, I can't afford it.

That is incorrect.  Microsoft's services are as innocuous to Internet Explorer as they are to Firefox or Opera.  And trust me, the day it happens, adios IE from me.

Thanks for the explanation.

Yeah, tell me about it: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=Using+Internet+Explorer+with+AOL&spell=1

Well, I've waited a while to see what turned up but just as I expected all that happened was a lot of ranting from people who seem to be paranoid about AOL and nothing at all from Renderosity to help in overcoming the problem.

I've looked back at previous threads from people with similar problems with IE, Firefox and Opera and they recieved help on the problems and no-one ever suggested that they changed browsers to overcome the problems of one site on the net.

tainted_heart ( ) posted Fri, 14 July 2006 at 2:26 PM

If you have IE installed on your system minimize your AOL window and run IE from your desktop. I used to do that all the time when I belonged to AOL. Their version of the browser run from within AOL was very problematical. Running the standard IE browser, included with windows, right from the desktop was the only way to surf the web without tearing your hair out.

It's all fun and games...
Until the flying monkeys attack!!!

Sorry about your issues, dadt, and hope they get resolved. I never knew that the AOL browser had to continue to run in order to maintain the internet connection. When I first started coming online, I had AOL, (on a Mac). When I started using other browsers, I only had to hit "quit" and the AOL browser seemed to.... well, quit.

I dunno, maybe it was still running in the background.

I do understand that you will use more memory if you have to run 2 browsers simultaneously; but until something changes, that might be the solution for when you visit Rendo. Hope everything works out! :)
