Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 21 6:06 am)
When you reinstalled poser, have you tried installing it to a new directory or a new folder that didn't contain your old runtimes? Because even when you uninstall, all the runtimes libraries are still remained (which it should) and along with your old personal info and preference settings. If poser runs fine on different location, than the culprit probably lies within those settings or even in the runtimes.
For me, when I had this "buffer overrun" error, it was caused by me creating a simple windows shortcut under the character folder in one of the runtimes. I did this so that I could move easily between different runtimes when I needed to work on the cr2's. But when I started the poser, and when it got to the part where it was loading the library, it just crashed after giving me that error message. I doubt you've also created these shortcuts but just letting you know that even the simple things like shortcuts can cause the crash.
You said you installed the recent poser update, so maybe that could also be the cause. Does program runs fine with the SR2? It really gave me fits trying to figure what was causing the "buffer overrun" because, essentially, it could mean anything. Just try to think of all the changes, even the minor ones that are done recently, not just to the Poser but to the computer. I hope you get yours sorted out.
Thanks for replying.
I did make a link to my main Runtime which is housed on a different drive and is very large. It will be a shame if I cannot access this as it has so much stuff I like to use. I might have to do a complete rebuild if that's the case. I too found this error very frustrating, because you just don't know why it actually happened. At the moment I'm backing up all my files and I'm going to try a new install. All the old files and prefs have been removed. Hopefully that'll do it, fingers crossed. I didn't have too many problems before I actually installed the update, so I may leave that for now.

I think have found out a possible cure to the problem. I decided to move my files over to my latop and I suddenly got the same problem with that P6, so I thought it must be something in the old Runtime making the Buffer overrun error. Anyway I deleted all my scrap files that I work on and then realised I had created shortcuts from the Geometries folder to both the textures and props library, and back again from these, because I was getting feedup go through all the folders when work on textures and obj's. So perhaps Poser was reading these shortcuts and in effect was bouncing back and forth between these folders. I have deleted these shortcuts on my laptop and the program now opens, only I now get a calling for com.obj, which I presume is a file used in the execution of the program, which I may have deleted in my haste to get rid of anything surplus. I'll do a reinstall now on the main computer and see how that goes.

That's what crossed my mind also, that maybe while Poser was loading the libraries it ended up loading in cycle until overloaded and crashed. Anyways, so it does look like shortcuts are also the culprit here. It's too bad that you had to delete some other files during the process but at least deleting the shortcuts can hopefully fix the problem.

Hi,
I'm have now experienced a Buffer overrun error occurring with Poser 6 for the second time, which stops the program from loading. I thought I had cured it before by doing a fresh install, but now it's happened again and I'm at my wits end to know what to do about it. Whether it's a coincidence or not this has happened after a get an auto WindowsXP update, also I have applied the latest update from e-frontier. Up until applying the latest P6 update I didn't have any problems at all with the program. I'm needing P6 to finish off a number of new products and I can manage without it, any help would be greatly appreciated.
My specs are 2.6 Celeron running 1GB RAM with access to 400GB or hard drive space
Cheers
Steve
PS. I have contacted e-frontier about this, but as of yet had no reply.
