Just saw the new Rikishi figure - he looks super cool - the product page user reviews are glowing...

Can we see some renders from the proud new owners?

Cheers

Damned rolling balckouts!  Mine'll be up tomorrow!  Damn!  Get the best character figure in the past year and can't get renders going on!  DUDE!  Rikishi bends just like a REAL guy!  This guy seriously rocks and then some!

If someone know how to get in contact with Odegami, tell him to contact Philc to get Wardrobe Wizard support for this guy!  I have a Kingpin render with Rikishi's name all over it!  I just need to get ISOP's suit for M3 on him!

I like Rikishi because he is like....A character actor?  He has a real personality in the expressions and his base mesh flexes like a real person's body.  This seems a superior product to the G2 figures.

Steve, that's an awesome pic. That dude means business!

I notice in the tech rundown he uses similar bend-morphing to Jolly the troll. Hopefully Daz is getting into this as well with their upcoming gal.

Can't wait to see more renders!

rikishi is japanese for "strength warrior" (sumo wrestler). they are usually morbidly obese, for obvious reasons.

Uuuhhhhh .... where is this guy available?  Looks interesting.

kuroyume0161 ( ) posted Wed, 02 August 2006 at 5:45 PM

It is sumou or sumō, not sumo.  I know that this is being pedantic and the other spelling is accepted 'English'.  But if someone said that they saw an ardvark - what would you do? ;)

I don't exactly like 'morbidly obese' people shoving each other around, but I love sumō.  Used to follow NHK news when available on cable, and this was always the best part.  Can't seem to find NHK news anymore.

As for the figure, superb work.  Just because of the inference, I might get it.  And if sumō is good enough for Zatoichi, it is good enough for me. :)

Oh yeah - here's the product page:

Will be interesting to see how popular this figure will be compared to "Pretty" ones. I have a suspicion that most users don't give 2 craps about superior functionality when weighed against basic attractiveness - Though the very reasonable price might be attractive in itself.

Nice work, Sallie, and I can't wait to see what Steve Shanks does for us.  Ok, here's a quickie render I did.  Definitely not my best, but gives you a better idea what he looks like.  The dynamic hair and conforming clothing are included in the pack.

Arendar ( ) posted Wed, 02 August 2006 at 10:59 PM · edited Wed, 02 August 2006 at 11:04 PM

Rikishi is an original figure and looks convincingly plump too!  Other than the Sumo wrestler loincloth, it was thoughtful of odegami to include the everyday conforming clothes, complete with fitting socks and 2 types of shoes, which extends the flexibility of the character.  Perhaps, he should have also included the cute face poses (shown in his promo renders) in the package but that is a minor omission (maybe he could release it as a Free Stuff download).  Now additional body textures (especially a tattooed "Yakuza"-type) in future releases by odegami or others would be good!

I bet he could be morphed into this guy pretty easy. This is 'Gary Farmer', who played on the movie 'Smoke Signals':

Yeah, just square off the head up top (make it wider from the temples on up), bring in the jaw some, arch the eyebrows, add a dimple in the chin, and you're done!

He can be a John Belushi kind of character, Sumuo, enforcer, or what ever.  Including a regular guy on vacation, chatting up his girlfriend and friends long distance on the cellphone,

There's a difference.  "Aardvark" is a Dutch word, a language that already uses Roman orthography so there was no need to transliterate the word.  "Sumo" comes from a language that didn't use that alphabet.  The use of the macron for long vowels is based on the Hepburn romanization of Japanese, and while that's the most common one used it isn't the only one.  In Japan, while Hepburn is the de facto standard, it's often simplified by omitting the macrons and circumflexes.  Odds are if you see a sign in Japan saying "Tokyo" it will read just that, not "Tōkyō" which Hepburn, strictly speaking, demands.  So you're more likely, in Japan, to see a sign indicating "sumo" than "sumō".

This isn't just Japanese, but happens commonly when translating words from one language to another that uses a different alphabet.  Arabic provides good example: the leader of Libya's name is variously translated as Khadaffi or Qadaffi, just to use two variations I've seen.  None of those are wrong and which you use depends, for instance, on what newspaper you write for.

bigjobbie ( ) posted Thu, 03 August 2006 at 11:20 AM

So, you're saying that concerning the use of makrons in newspapers and other legitimate text  media...sumo do, sumo don't?

(so sorry, couldn't resist!)

The renders have been great - love the micky ears!

Cheers

I agree completely, but I just like the more correct phonetic/syllabic English equivalents - knowing the Kana and Kanji.  I much prefer to see Oosaka over Osaka and sumou over sumo any time - even if it reads funny to the unitiiated.  One downside of the 'dumbing down' because of symbolic limitations is that, for Japanese, it can lead to misinterpretation or difficulty in referencing if one is not already acquainted with the word.  I've encountered this myself on occasion because of the lack of compound vowel or double consonant delineation.

You say Hezbollah, I say Hizbollah.. this could be a good song... ;)

Just to add, there seems to be little problem with supporting non-English, but European, Alphabetics - tildes, carets, and accents.  I would as much complain about seeing "hasta manana" as sumo!  Proper names, one supposes, can be forgiven as the association, incorrect or not, has already been engrained.  But I will always write it Tōkyō. ;P

'Nough on that - back to enjoying this cool figure!

SOMEone's puppetmastering him, it looks like, I dunno.

Anyways, he was tough to set up in PuppetMaster, because of his hugeness! There were some difficult aesthetic decisions to make. I agree, the arms have to be out farther for fat guys - and they are - but you can't really tell in that pose, because of the fat. I had it more exaggerated to do a real fat guy walk, but then his arms were pretty much flailing straight out to his side, and too many other poses looked bad.

I did it the 'normal' way first, and tested... then the 'exaggerated fat guy way', and tested... and ended up compromising half way between 'normal pose' and 'fat guy pose.'

If you prefer the other way, you're welcome to adjust the arm flail and leg spread yourself in PuppetMaster, using the tools provided. 😉

kamilche ( ) posted Thu, 03 August 2006 at 11:02 PM

OK, I set up 'Rikishi H' to do the full fat man thang. He looks better on this walk, I grant you that:

But he kinda falls down on poses that are already exaggerated, as in the following:

Eh, six of one, half a dozen of the other.
Since Rikishi comes with an 'H' version that has a beard, you could leave one character set up to take 'normal' poses, and another that does them the 'fat guy way', and take your pick.

It took about 2 minutes to tweak Rikishi in PuppetMaster to do poses 'the fat guy way', but at least 10x that to render him, upload him, and talk about the differences on this post. 😉

kamilche ( ) posted Thu, 03 August 2006 at 11:22 PM

Well... after staring at him for a bit, I have to agree, I wasn't bold enough with the 'fat guy' movements. I'll make the bearded Rikishi's movement the 'default' PuppetMaster tweak. If you want his legs closer or his arms farther down, you can tweak it yourself in PuppetMaster.
