Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 10 1:16 pm)
you'd probably need the whole thing recompiled..;) The Linux market's kinda small, at least for things like this. Check with the publishers of Poser, and see what they say.
Conversely, there's probably someone, somewhere, who's made a module to run things in a Windows virtual machine, or whatever..look around the net for Linux windows emulator, I s'pose

Poser 3 apparently worked under Wine (Windows emulator), but sources I've seen suggest that later versions are unusable for various reasons. See the link for an example.actually in terms of professional 3D, linux is pretty big...
unfortunately poser has never been regarded very seriously by the pro 3D community, despite the fact that many freelancers use it for some animation yet are loathe to admit theyve even installed it. so i doubt theres much pressure to have it ported over, since most poser users are hobbyists.
id love to see a linux version of poser. then i could switch my work rig completely over to linux.... combine that with an xgl workspace and id be in heaven :)
perhaps some requests to e-frontier would help? seems like the reason it wont work under wine is a simple font issue which could possibly be addressed by a downloadable software patch for wine/crossover office users.
Hi all.
Thanks for the information about this.
Basically, the only reason I now run windows is Poser, and I begrudge Microsoft their continuing upgrades to operating systems, let alone all the security holes and the fact that my new laptop only came with a recover disk so I am more than nervous about re-formatting and re-installing the whole XP OS from scratch.
Is WINE the only windows emulator in town?
Meantime, I'll try and get in touch with Curious Labs and see if they know how to make WINE run Poser.
Cheers,
Martin
well, we learn something every day..;) Actually, I know there's a Linux version of Wings (pretty much the same, a few key combinations are slightly different, at least under Red Hat), so you can make props and clothing in the meantime..;)

Haven't seen him here in a while but Penguinisto was the Linux fan(atic) :-) He'd probably know the latest developments. VMWare is pretty much the state of the art in emulation that I'm aware of and I think they just started offering a free version. You should be able to run a Linux VM under XP/2000 or vice versa using their software. Keep in mind that performance is almost always going to suffer to some degree under emulation though the new chips coming from AMD and Intel are going to put some of the virtualization in hardware which should help in that regard.

My recollection is that Peng got Poser (perhaps the Mac version or 5.0?) running under Linux and was crowing about it over at PoserPros, more than a year ago. A search there would definitely turn up some useful information.
My voice to the vote, by the way. The only thing preventing migration to Linux is the 3D tools. And there is an alternative to Wine that I can't remember the name of (coffee hasn't kicked in), that my Linux friends swear by, possibly bundled with SUSE 10.1. It's either free or dirt cheap. I haven't set up a Linux machine yet to try it on.

I'm sure it's been asked before, but what's the current state of play regarding running Poser (6) on a Linux box? What emulators, etc., would I need if I were to go down this route?
TIA
Martin
