Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 20 11:41 am)
I would say that the material room shaders are so much a part of my images that I need to use the Firefly renderer. However, I don't have a powerful computer and when I see the renders that are made by those that do they are much clearer than the P4 renderer is capable of. The P4 renderer is great for previewing and may be you are right for large complex scenes the render time is not worth the wait with Firefly. Many of my pictures have taken 7 - 8 hours to render. 5 - 10 mins would be great ;) D|S has a good renderer that is quicker without mat room shaders and IMHO is better than the P4 renderer. [The above are only my opinions and based on my eyesight and monitor]
The important thing is not to stop questioning.

In the end it comes down to what you want for your image....if one renderer works best for the vision you have in mind, then go with it. If you need something done fast, then go with whatever will get it done in the timeframe you have set. Similarly, if you've spent days/weeks setting up a scene for a still shot, are a few more hours to render it really that bad? (just how my brain works anyways)
I started with Bryce 4 on an older machine when I decided to get into computer art...so I've been used to longer render times and it just doesn't bother me all that much that my scenes might take a while. I can always set things to render while I'm asleep....or go clean the house or work on a multitude of other projects while my computer renders my scene.
I have found that Firefly can be a bit more responsive if you set things up manually rather than going with the default settings most of the time. And unless you really really need it for some reason, turning texture filtering off can help cut down on Firefly times.
Certainly the ammount of stuff you have in your scene and your computer is going to dictate render times....I just did a shot with 5 Aiko's all clothed with hair.....I had to turn everything but shadows off and then set it to render before I left the house. Was out for a couple hours, and when I came back my girls were sitting there rendered for me. I haven't tried it with the P4 renderer yet, but if you like I could do it for a comparison shot.

Never thought of "clarity" as a P4/Firefly render issue. However, my eyes are definitely not 20/20 at my age. Would like to kill whose who print cooking instructions in <8 font. Shaders are still largely a mystery to me also. You have a point, due to my lack of knowledge of these issues. Material Room Shaders? Yes , I have heard of these creatures, but never used them. Please excues my ignrance, but are they worth 7-8 hours of hum in my bedroom?

This is the render preset I use with Firefly. I make adjustments as needed, but on average my renders don't usually take forever.Unless I have the wild urge to see what I can get away with as the render mentioned above. ^_^

This is the exact same prop (Stonemason's Hellcolumn 3). Firefly allows displacement (actually changing the shape of an object with a texture map) as opposed to bump mapping which pretends to add bumps like the P4 renderer does.
True, I don't always use displacement, but I do prefer the Firefly look to the P4 look.
I think it's the anticipation....like opening a suprise present. For me, even if it took all night to render, it's still fun to see what's waiting for me on the screen. ^_^
Was hoping to set the render to do it's thing before I left for work, but Poser wasn't done loading the pz3 before I had to go. But I should have a comparison shot to show sometime tonight-tomorrow. That's what the lunch hour is for I suppose. ^_~

Well um....I made Poser mad earlier and it gave me a big nasty raspberry and said it's little brain refused to cooperate.
I'll do up a shot with just one Aiko so it will behave when I get home again later...

Hi,, if you go with Firefly, here are some useful settings to speed it up.I'm back and thanks for all your opinions. Not sure about the memory thing though. My puter says it doesn't like Firefly much more often than P4. Really appreciate the Firefly render setting ideas, maybe the default setting I've been using are my problem. Thanks for your link richardson and your advise Realmling and your pictures raven.

Not wanting to set the cat amongst the pigeons or offend anybody's artistic methods, I really must question the value of Firefly rendering over Poser 4 rendering.
Lighting options are far superior in Firefly and AO lighting and reflections s are fantastic, however once scenes become more complex with many figures and props, the advantages of Firefly become outweighed by extreme render times and program hangs. Similarly, I am yet to be convinced that 24 hour+ renders are really worth the wait when compared to a 5-10 minuite P4 renders.
Maybe someone needs to show me 2 renders (without reflections), one Firefly and one P4, of the same scene, to convince me that committing my computer to hours and hours of rendering is worth the resultant picture. Perhaps Firefly is more suited to to single figure portrait renders than multi-figure, multi-prop large scenes. What do you think?
