Subject: Warez, anyone???

With all this deal with Anton, it makes me wonder just how extensive this "sharing" thing is. I've got things in the store that have sold rather moderately (best one so far as been the Warlord Fantasy Pak). I'm still rather clueless how that I could sell only bout 10 of things but yet when I posted morphs in freestuff (which wont work without the boots!), I have over 450 downloads! I dont see how all these people are able to use the morphs for the boots when it wont work without the OBJ. Am I just being paranoid or what? Dave

Hi Dave, I cant answer for anyone else but I will download something in freestuff if I am planning on purchasing the item it is for in the future. Freestuff sometimes disappears so I get it when it is there. For example this morning I downloaded poses in freestuff for Sharkeys new wings in the store, I dont have the wings but they are something I want to get when I have the money. :)

Apparently you guys missed the post by ScottA asking that warez related threads be confined to the C&D forum. Can we please go on with Poser related questions?

Well excuse me! This was something that concerned me and so I posted in light of what had happened to Anton. And no I didnt see that posting. Dave

I think there are some or many people , who dl everything they can get.when i stared poser( one year ago) i did the same.but meanwhile , i dl only things , i really want to use.

Dave, Yes I've always wondered about the download stuff too. I've put out items that have had like a 1000 downloads yet have never seen hide nor hair of it in any renders. I think people just mindlessly download. I don't know why but I do it myself when its something I think would be cool later. For example, I grabbed those lamps in freestuff. I'm not using them yet nor have I even unpacked the zip but I may use them later for variety in a render. I think only like 1% of us actually do anything substantial with Poser. The rest I think just play around with poser and make pretty pictures. BTW, any chance you can make a worm like in Galaxy of Terror? I know you have Slerm but some big bulbous thing with no claws and maybe some tendrils would be awesome. Your work is first rate.

Dave ( ) posted Mon, 16 April 2001 at 12:14 PM

Slerm? I think you may have me confused with Davo. I do people(Gillian) and clothes (the Valiant & Warlord Fantasy Pak). Don't do too many creatures. Dave

Isn't making pretty pictures something substaintal? Heh, I sure hope so. Not everyone wants to be in the "public eye" and have their work scrutinized by everyone. That doesn't mean they don't use or appreciate the free stuff. Quite the opposite infact. I maintain a small site for my work, but less then 5% of my renders are on it.If you make items for free use, know that 99.9% of us who download it appreciate it very much. Even if you never see any of our works. Now on to the comment that started this, I think that some people may have dl it for later use, others might have accidentaly dl it not knowing you had to have the boots. Unless it was clearly marked (I cant remember). With those numbers it is possible that it may have been stolen*. (PS can we quit refering to it in that happy elite hacker term and call it what it really is THEFT) I hope that doesn't deter you or anyone else from making either for free or purchase, any other items. Remember the good folks do outweigh the bad around here.

Woop, sorry Dave. My mistake. Accept any appologies.

Dave ( ) posted Mon, 16 April 2001 at 3:45 PM

No prob, Mason. Honest mistake.

davo ( ) posted Mon, 16 April 2001 at 7:51 PM

send me a picture Mason and I'll take a look at it, see if it's do-able, I haven't done a creature in a while since I've been working on my Dreadworks and mechonomicron series, but I'm hankering to do another creature soon. Davo :-)

Hey, I think this is a very valid thread for the general forum. It's probably reassuring to our talented vendors to be reminded that we all download and archive a lot of stuff because we MAY use it sometime (and purchase a parent product) and want to get it while it's available. I just used something yesterday that I almost forgot I had saved on a two year old CD - sometimes I actually get back to that wonderful idea the item inspired when I first saw it!

Dave ( ) posted Tue, 17 April 2001 at 7:56 AM

Yeah it's a little reassuring. You just sometimes wonder though when you post something in freestuff that's related to a product you have up for sale. I know I tried to make sure it was spelled out that you had had to have the product in order to use it. Then I get over 400 downloads for the freestuff and only 10 sales. Just kind of makes a guy wonder. Dave

We could guess that the humans read the words on the pretty picture only somewhat more often than the auto-downloading programs do - LOL. Hope you included a Read-me file with purchasing info for the original model.

joeyb ( ) posted Wed, 18 April 2001 at 9:33 PM

I know I download textures, so that I can see how much detail and how people did the work. I don't have Mike or Vicki, but I do have some of the better free-stuff for them to get ideas on how others do the maps and texturing.
