Subject: Transfering UVMaps from one Figure to Another

MatrixWorkz ( ) posted Thu, 28 September 2006 at 12:28 AM · edited Mon, 02 December 2024 at 9:52 AM

Just what all is involved in transfering the UVMaps of one figure to another? IE: Can James 1 UVMaps be transfered to James G2 so he can use the Textures created for James 1? How difficult would this be and would it be worth my time to attempt it?

Patorak is in the process of converting Jessi to take Victoria 3 textures.
Maybe he could give you some pointers.  Apparently this is a long
and difficult process.  I guess it sort of depends on how many weeks
you are willing to invest in the effort and what your skill level is
in using UV mapping programs.

Skill in UVMapper the free version=I know how to save a UVMap and load a UVMap.

I don't know any other program. Guess that means I've got a lot to learn or I can just pass on the idea and see if anyone else runs with it.

There's one in Wings, but you'd have to import the .obj, and Wings has a problem with that big a model. There used to be something called Lithunwrap, but I'm not sure if it's still out there.

For now, you'd need the basic textures, and import the new character in, and apply, and tweak, tweak, tweak..;)

I wish I'd said that.. The Staircase Wit

I'm going to guess you mean importt he OBJ into this Lithunwrap program and not the standard UVMapper that I have since I don't know of any way to apply the basic textures to different models in UVMapper free edition. Maybe the Pro Edition does that, but I don't think the basic does. I could of course be wrong. All I've ever done is basic exporting of UV's and texture maps with it.

Hello Everyone!

First off before I answer your question Matrix Workz,  I'd like to apologize to the Beta testers for the delay of the Jessi to V3 remap project.  I burnt my retinas welding at work and it has taken a week to recover.  Look for Beta test 3 this saturday,  again I'm soory for the delay.

Anyway,  to answer your question,  yes you can use James1 on James2  but and this is a big but,  You would haqve to remap James2 to take James 1 textures.  Much in the same way I'm remapping Jessi to take V3's textures.

Cheers!

So what software are you using Pastorak? Are there any tutorials on the process of transfering UV's that you use?

Jeez, that's aweful.  Hope you are getting better and will be all right.  Take all the time you need.

Patorak, I sincerely hope you'll recover fully and please be careful! the light in your eyes cannot be replaced!

As for UV maps: since an UV map corresponds to the mesh of the object, it is a very complicated task to transfer it to another object with a different mesh. Number of polys, typical placements,...
I can create a map, but it takes more knowledge to transfer it. Hats off to those who can!

Ouch, best wishes for a speedy recovery ...

Thanks Everyone!

I'm seeing a lot better now,  Although my eyes are still a little sensitve to light.

Anyway,  Matrix Workz,  to answer your questions.  I use Lightwave,  PLG's UV plugins,  and UVMapper Pro.  I've found the following tutorials helpful;    Dr Geeps UVMapping at  www.drgeep.com  ,  Steve Cox's at  www.uvmapper.com  ,  Lightwave UVMapping tutorials at  www.newtek.com/lightwave  ,  Arduino's  new uvs for victoria 2,  and the UV Mapping forum here at renderosity.

As for the process,  Gongyla is absolutely correct.  Given all the variables the best we can do is align the UVs to the original and minimalize the stretching.  We acheive this by two steps.

The first step in this process is to find a 3d modelling program that supports layers and that you are comfortable with.  The reason I say layers is,  you will need to import both models;    the original UV( James1) in the background,  as this will be your template,  and the UV( James2 ) you wish to fit to the original in the foreground.  The fitting is acheived with morphing the mesh and/or manipulating the UV Map in the foreground,  to match the UV map in the background.

The second step is to export the remapped geometry ( new James 2 UV.obj ) as an obj then load it into UV mapper and export the UVs.  Then load the original James 2.obj into uv mapper and import the new UVs.  Save this new model then reference a cr2 to it.  When you reference a cr2 to the new geometry make sure to delete any existing material references.  The reason we use UV Mapper is it fixes a lot of problems our 3d modelling programs create when they convert from their native file formats to the Wavefront obj format.

I hope this helps.

Cheers!

I used to be a welder, many years ago, long before automatic darkening welding sheilds...

They call it being flashed, BTW, and some weldors would try to do it to unsuspecting passer-bys.

After it happens the whole world seems smokey, and it feels like you have sand in  your eyes.

Oddly enough, when you get flashed you are semi-imune to it happening again for about a month or so.  At least the effects aren't as bad.

Anyway, keep forging ahead on the remapping!  ;-)

Hello Jim!

Yea,  I was welding for 8 hours with a shield my boss gave me.  At the end of the day,  one of my co-workers came up to me and pointed out the shield was not uv protective.  It was a grinding shield!  Everybody got a big laugh out of it.  That is ironworking though,  when work slows down everyone plays dirty tricks on each other.  Usually to bump someone out of a job.  Luckily though I didn't miss anytime over it.  It just made looking at the monitor painful.

Anyhow,  I'm back at it now and working on the head as I write this.

Cheers!

oh, i hope you recover fully soon!   and i'm glad your eyes are feeling better.  punks!  messing with an artist's eyes... well, all i know is that karma can be a bitch.
