Does anyone know if there is a way to disable the loading screens in windows xp?

The black one that says windows xp with the animated blue dots underneath and the welcome screen.

Nope (afaiaa).  You can change the Windows startup screen but not disable it.

Why do you ask?

I was just wondering, I thought that it might start up slightly faster without them.

The startup screen doesn't impact startup.  The loading of apps, dlls, and other services impacts startup.

Several things that impact startup (generally) are:

• What is being loaded by the Startup menu.  If it isn't absolutely necessary, remove it!!

• Services being loaded - there are quite a few that can be either disabled or set to manual instead of automatic.  Do a Google search for relevant info.

• More technically, there are some applications loaded from the Registry file.  Some stick in auto Tray icons and run (QuickTime).  You can find more information on these by doing a Google search of "Windows registry startup".

P.S.> If you want to increase performance in XP (generally - not related to startup), turn off the bells and whistles - Control Panel->System->Performance->Adjust for Best Performance.  Yeah, you get the old Windows 98/2000 interface, but it increases overall performance significantly.

plus, if somethings going wrong (things like the fabled 'blue screen of death'), you'd want them to show to be able to explain to tech support what's wrong.

Pakled disabling the windows startup screens would not affect the blue screen of death.

erm...true...;) I think I've been stuck with company builds so long, I'm just used to it. I was thinking more along the lines of being able to start in various safe modes, etc., been troubleshooting so long, I forget how normal bootup is..;)

I'm not sure that disabling the startup screens is going to make the bootup process any faster, but XP's been 'hacked' to death anyways, so you never know. Just think it might be at the expense of various diagnostic routines and dlls running, etc..;) Never afraid to admit I don't know everything..;)

my system boots proclaiming it's loading Windows 3....

use wisely and it will tell you exactly what services you can turn off in XP.

once you've got that done (and a speed boost right off)
use http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html Autoruns will let you kill off the crap that gathers in the Sysbar : Eg : you don't need Quicktime in the background. (QTask). it's likely that your printer / scanner etc have loaded TSR's (terminate stay resident) there.. do you need them? 99% of the time no. they are not needed at all.

run a virus check then a defrag. (also go over your hard disks with a fine tooth comb. lack of space impacts performance as well).

ps : consider dumping the windows shell in favour of a faster less resource hungry replacement such as Aston ( http://www.astonshell.com/ ) (only $29.95 - allows you to boot into windows standard or the better Aston desktop. works fine with poser and I've not found anything it won't work with)

PS : YOU may want to consider XPlite ( http://www.litepc.com/ ) which allows you to remove certain components of XP (Internet Explorer, Outlook Express etc) which will also give you a speed boost. the downside is, you need IE to run windows update...

PPS : Check your fonts. hundreds of fonts will slowdown your boottime. also if running a network, mapped drives across the network will also slowthings right down...
