Subject: Tips on fitting shoes to characters with longer legs?

I'm working with "The Heiress" a character for SP3, and her legs are much longer than SP3's legs and I just can't manage to get shoes on this girl's long legs!

The above link are the boots that I'm trying to work with, and when I put them on default SP3 and confrom them they are fine.  But when I put them on The Heiress and conform them, they end up distorted and using bend and twist and side to side on either the boots or the figure's foot make it worse.

What are the secrets of putting shoes on a character with longer legs than the default figure?

the leg and foot mesh of SP3 is most likely stretched and morphed in the creation of this char, and the boots you are using expect to conform with the default mesh, so the boots cant logically conform any longer.

Your best option would be to make the heiress' feet and toes invisible, position the boots over the shins properly, parent the boots to SP3s shins (Boot>LShin to SP3>LShin and Boot RShin to SP3>RShin), then use the bend and twist dials on the boots feet and toes to get the proper pose with feet contacting the floor surface.

I think you'll need to scale the boots' leg parts (thighs, shins, and possibly feet).

Try the following :-
Boots : Thighs, yScale = 116%; Shins, yScale = 125%
Figure : Shins, Taper = 2%; Hide Feet and Toes.

you might also look at moving the boots using the y trans dial. If hidden there is a python script unhidexyz.py.

scaling the boots the same as the figure should work though.

Ah crap I didnt think about duplicating the limb adjustments :/

nruddock has the awesome suggestion here. I think youd only want to use what I suggested in a case of a custom magnet morphed char where you cant read any dial settings and duplicate on matching garment segments.

Thank you!  I guess I didn't turn the right dials!  I was concentrating on Y Trans and conforming, parenting and using the bend dials.  I didn't think to use Y Scale.

Well I have a whole new problem once I pose her. 

I conformed the boots after resizing them as above.  And this is the result after posing.  I tried to parent instead, but the boots are one figure and you can only parent either to the right or left shin. I tried both and both still give this result.  There is no "Z Trans" for the left shin of the boot and using bend distorts the boot badly.  Trying to make the figure's shin invisible leads to part of the leg above the boot missing, plus the boot placement doesn't look right for the stance.

sigh  I'm beginning to wonder if I should just leave her barefoot,  LOL

could try making the left boot invisible, bring in a second instance of the boots, make the second right boot invisible, and then position and parent the second left boot? (this is probably a desperation ploy that will be made obsolete by a more logical fix, but it could get you back to work in poser while waiting for a simpler solution)

I think this means that you'll have to also adjust some of the other leg bones in the boots.
You should be able to unhide the translation dials by opening the CR2 in a text editor and replacing "hidden 1" with "hidden 0" as required.

I think I'm starting to remember why I put this particular character into storage and as soon as I'm done with these few renders, back she goes!!  LOL  She's decided that she doesn't mind bare feet so long as her boobies are covered   :b_smile:

If the heiress is styled after the person I think she is, then from what I've heard she doesn't mind haveing her boobies exposed along with other parts of her body either.  Just dim the lights, and let her pretend that she's reshooting her notorious/infamous video.

Which reminds me, has anyone ever tried to get infra-red type renders in Poser?

The way I've always done this is to scale the clothing items the same as the figure. If you scaled the shins and feet to say 110 then scale the boots the same.

This is a character I did using D3. He's scaled much bigger and taller than a default M3. The clothing fit perfectly after I applied the same scaling to the clothing. Before I added the scaling to the clothing the shoes were up next to his shins.

Unfortunately the arms and legs are done with StretchArms and StretchLegs dials , which are acting as ERC masters for various scale channels so it's going to require a little detective work to find out exactly what the settings are in order to be able to match them.

yeah... that would cause problems since the boots probably don't have matching dials. It might be easier to just use the scale dials instead.

      Maybe this will work, I don't have that character so not sure.   Apply a magnet to the rfoot of the boot.  Under properties  add element to deform and select and rtoe and rshin of the boot .  Grab the mag zone and enlarge it  till it is about 1/2 way up the shin of the boot. Then you select the magnet and ytran it down till it lines up.  After that do the same for left boot. That way the boot should conform to the default character. Leave the magnets on the boots (instead of spawning morph targets)  so you can adjust later if they are off once posed.
